We received a tommunication from
“Cantus” this week. “Cantus” did
not give his or her name, hence we
were compelled to assign the letter to
the waste bisket. No communica
tions are published unless we know
the name of the writer.
The II. Fay Gaffney Camp U. S. C.
Y. will be represented in Charleston.
Miss Rosa Gaffney has been elected
sponsor and Miss Agnes Littlejohn
maid of honor, and their charming
manners and accomplishments will
give prominence to the camp.
Many farmers of the county were
in the Saturday. They seemed in
good spirit after a week of hard work.
They report p anting as nearly finish
ed and the first planting coming up
well. Some have sommenced to plow
the young crop and say the ground is
in fine fix for work.

Cherokees most charming and attrac

Kdmond II. Blanton exhibited at
The Ledger olliee yesterday, an old
fuse which was used by the Confed
eracy in firing her cannons in the
days when she was fighting for the
rights of American citi/.jns, as trans
mitted to them by their ancestors,
who established the lHited States
Goverment.
Mr. Kennett, of Jonesville, and
his two sons, Albert and i'uui were in
the city Saturday, on a visit to rela
tives. Mr. Kennet is a long patron
of The Ledger and one we appreciate.
Mr. Kennett is a good practical
farmer and says plant sorghun. He
says it is the cheapest food crop for
animals of all kinds that he plants.

pens Memorial Association are now
getting replies to invitations to the
celebrations. G«-v. Candler, of Geor
gia, is coining. Other distinguished
citizens say tliey are coming—many

AN INCENDIARY FIRE.

Saturday morning between one
and'two o’clock Mr. Taylor Petty,
who lives five miles out on the Union
road, discovered that his barn was on
fire. He went to it ns soon as possi
ble. as did his neighbors, but it was
too late to save even any of the con
tents. The roof hud fallen in and the
stalls in the ground story where his
horses were, were enveloped in
flames, his horses already down and
dead. Three of them belonging to
Mr. Petty and one to his worthy
neighbor, Mr. John Cook. Mr. Petty
also lost a full supply of fodder, bay
an 1 straw and many farm tools and
one wagon.
Mr. Petty and bis neighbors, soon
saw signs of the fire being the work of
un incendiary. The fiend bad ridden
on horseback to the corner of the
barn and touched the lire to it. The
burses tracks were recognized and
went in the direction of the owners.
Mr. Petty and some of the neighbors
followed the track and Mr. Cook and
Mr. James Allen came to the city for
a warrant. Magistrate Phillips issued
the warrant and placed it in the hands
of SherilT Thomas, who was soon on
the scene. But before the sheriff
arrived Mr. Petty and his party had
followed the horse tracks to the
stable of a negro man, its owner,
named Cal Tate, found the horse wet
with perspiration and at once went to
the house and took charge of Jim
Tate, the suspect, who is u nephew of
Cal. When the sheriff arrived they
turned the negro over to him who
brought him to the city and placed
him in j til. Cul Tate followed on to
town and was arrested and put in
jail ns an accomplice.
Soon after being placed in jail Jim
Tate, who is about eighteen years
old, made a confession saying he
he and his uncle Cul Tate did
the burning and both will have to
f.tce this serious charge before the
coutt There can be no extenuating
circumstances connected with such a
crime. Cherokee count? will be satis
fied with the penalty of the law, but
it demands the extreme one.
Messrs. Petty and Cook are two
of Cherokee’s most worthy citizens.
They have a competency of this
world’s* goods, and have with their
own hands worked for every cent they
rinw possess and that which they had
burned and deserve and have the
sympathy of all Cherokee.
Magistrate Phillips commenced the
laves igation of the charges of the
rilute against Cal and Jim Tate yes
terday for the burning of Mr. Tay
lor Petty’s barn, but on account of
the absence of some witnesses ad
journed bis court until to-day, when,
from revelations made yesterday, it is
thought that both will be held for
Dial.

Perhaps the largest crowd that
ever loft Gaffney in one day left to-day
for the reunion in Charleston. The
old veterans, their wives, their g'ris
and boys all svent, The crowd wta
pretty fqually divided about as many
going on the S. C. A G., as on the
Southern.
The Ledger is proud of the fine
showing Ciierokee will make in the
“old city by the sea” and wishes all
who have gone a pleasant trip and a
safe return.

Mr. A. Frank Smith, Jr., died yes
terday morning about ft o’clock at
the residence of IDs father-in-law.
.Mr. John P. Wright, at Limestone
Springs.
Mr. Smith was a member of that
old and always highly respected
Smith family, of Smith Ford, on
Broad river. Ho was the only son of
A. Frank Smith, Sr., who survives
him, and was about thirty years old.
Mr. Smith had lived all his life in
what is now Cherokee county, and
was well known lo our people. He
was a consistent member of the
Methodist church. Mr. Smith had a
kind and genial disposition with a
cordial greeting and a kind word for
all.
Ho leaves a devoted wife and three
small children, a father and many
relatives and friends who mourn for
his death.
The remains will be buried today
at Limestone cemetery.

The closing exercises of the col
ored Graded School took place last
Thursday night in Dunton Chapel
iii this city. TJjj, examinations in
the various branMfosof study showed
that faithful and careful work had
been done by the principal, Rev. R.
C. Campbell, and IDs assistant
teacher. The church was crowded
with visitors and patrons of the
school and all went away well pleased
with the teachers and tho advance
ment made by the children.

J. A. McArthur, who was raised
near Gaffney but who lias lived most
of bis manhood days in CIDckasaw
county,Mississppi, was a few days ago
elected President of a large cotton
mill company at West Point, Miss.
Mr. McArthur lias many relatives
and friends in Cherokee who are
proud of his success. We learn he
will be in Gaffney in a sho t time to
inspect our uDlls.
