Cherokeo will have a big delega tion at the reunion in Charleston. J. H. Curry lias commenced work on his dwelling house on Duford street. Old Veterans brighten up and step a iittle quicker as the reunion days approach. The trial of Stuckey for the killing of Sevier was commenced in Spartan burg Court yesterday. Ttuford street is soon to be ex tended west between the Carpet mill and the Mills property. We learn that the contract for put ting in Gaffney's system of water works will be let on the 18th inst. The many friends of Ilev. S. T. Creech are glad to see him on the streets again after an attack of grip. The 27th will be a history making day in Cherokee. Let all Cherokee see to it and make it as full as pos sible. Laker & Lemaster have com menced the erection of a six room cot tage for J. Kb. Jefferies on Buford oireet. Invitations have been sent out to many distinguished men to attend the celebration at Cuwpens battle ground. Farmers do not come to the city much these days. When you see one he is generally starting home and looks in a hurry. Senator Tillman will appoint his son, 1$. B. Tillman, Jr., his private secretary as soon as lie prepares him self for the work. Mr. W. W. Ancrum, of Camden, is the appointee of this, the 5th dis trict, to the Naval Academy. Mr. J. X. Stringfellow, of Chester, is the alternate. Booker, of The Cherokee Investigator, will be pleaseci to learn that he has so far recovered from his recent injuries as to allow his removal from tho hos pital to the residence of his relatives in Charlotte. The body of Roland Black, who was thought to have been drowned in Pacolct river, near Thompson’s Ford, in Spartanburg county, a few days ago, was recovered Tuesday. An in quest was held which done away with the drowning theory and caused the arrest of Lewis McAbee and L. J. Smith for murder. The post-mortem developed that Black’s neck had been broken. The mayor had three of the dusky damsels, of Kendricksviile which is the scene of many dusiij events, be fore him yesterday. The dusky damsels had been drunk and lighting. The mayor got $12.50 out of the scrumuge and exiled one of the par ties. If he hud treated the others similarly the city would have been benetited. All the members of the hoard were present, Much routine busi ness was transacted in the forenoon. In the afternoon tho bids for build ing the county jail wore opened. Several parties put in bids, hut the one by the I’awley Jail Company was the lowest and was accepted by the Commissioners. It was $i),499.50. This company will begin work next week and is prepared to finish the work in ninety days. The plan of the jail is modern in every respect. It combines security and comfort for prisoners and ample living apart ments for the jailer and family Baker & Lemaster and I). K. Cecil have contracted with the Pawley Jail Co., to erect the jail building. The First \V«- llii\«- lit aril of It. Florence and GulTnej are disputing as to which ranks fifth among the towns of South Carolina, it being con ceded the first'four places are Hilled by Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, and Spartanburg respectively. Before either Florence or Gaffney can hold fifth place, they will have to reckon with Rock Hill, Anderson, Green wood, Newberry, Darlington. Ches ter, Orangeburg, Abbeville, Sumter, Camden and other ambitious towns, two of which had larger populatians in 1890 than Florence. Gaffney was even father down the list.—Columbia Record. Gaffney had not heard of the dispute between herself and Florence as to which ranks fifth among the towns of South Carolina. Gaffney is taking care of herself and is surprised at any daily paper in South Carolina re- fering to her population in 1890 as any indication of her rank among the towns of the State in 1899. There wna no dirty playing on either side and the defeated team will have to admit that we gave them a fair licking. The Gaffney friends of Mr. I). Little, now a student at the South Carolina College, should be glad to learn that he is a member of their team and played an excellent 3J base; he also made one of the runs with which his team is credited. ^ A Soph. The Concert. Monday evening u musical con cert will be given under the direc tion of Prof. W. L. Johnson at the Graded School building. The pro gram will consist of vocal and in- stumental solos, trios, etc., and the jouanile cantata “Jack, tho Giant Ivillcr.” In this act there is an amusing and at the same time won derful piece of banjo playing by Mas ter Itussell Stacy.
