The roads have sufficiently impro ved to allow fanners to begin to haul fertilizers. Mayor Littlejohn’s court contrib uted one recruit to the county chain gang Tuesday. Magistrate McCraw, of Grassy Pond, committed a prisoner to jail Wednesday for home breaking. The bad weather is interfering with the servey of the new railroad from Gaffney to Clifton and Spartanburg. M. M. Ledford, a builder of Ashe ville, N. C., lias come to Gaffney and will make bis home here for some time. Sarah Guiton, the colored woman who was so severely burned here Tues day, is doing very well, and will re cover. W. It. Baker, a prominent brick and lumber man of Gaffney, came in from bis mills in the country Wed nesday. Hugh Wilkins, the attentive mail carrier from Gaffney to Pacolet, 1 as moved to the city and is occupying the Dr. Bonner house. A. It. N. Folger has been appointed postmaster at this place in place of T. H. Littlejohn who was appointed by President Cleveland. Baker and Lemaster have contrac ted with W. A. Turner for the erec tion of a five room cottage on east Frederick street. It is to be built at once. The clouds disappeared Wednesday evening. Thursday morning was clear and bright and inspired a hope for good working weather in the near fut ure. Most people concured in the opin ion, that the peach crop was kilhd in the bud by the intense cold weather in February, but recent developments show that many peach trees will soon be in bloom. Gardens will be late this spring, very little work has been done in them yet. A few have snatched an opportune hour and planted Irish potatoes and onions, but generally when the ground wis too wet. Mrs. A. V. Montgomery has let a contract to Baker & Lemaster to build a seven room cottage on the corner of Race and Petty streets. 1.umber is being placed on the ground and the work will begin at once. The pastor of the First Baptist Church will preach on “The Golden Rule” Sunday morning and “The Righteous Scarcely Saved” Sunday evening. Visitors are most cordialy welcomed to all the services of the church. Farmers are despondent on account of tiie continued wet weather. But it has been as had before. Mr. Dock Cooper, who moves things on his farm, says that in 1897 he only plowed two days before the 27th of March, and that he has done more than that this year. Gaffney’s De»’p Well. Gaffney’s deep well is now five hun dred and fifty feet deep, and finished. Five hundred feet of it is through solid granite, and the water is flowing out at the top of it in a beautiful crystal stream, which rivals in its beauty nature’s many similar rivulets so common in our Piedmont country. The water is tempting to the eye, and though strongly mineral, is pleasant to the taste; and coming as it does from a deep strata, must be what Gaffney has been digging for—pure water. Pure water! an indispensable element in every well regulated city ; and Gaffney has it in sufficient quan tity for all domestic and public pur poses. Securing this pure water is a feat worthy of Gaffney's untiring ef forts on all lines of practical progress. One which commends itself to our up- to-date people, and receives their hearty “well done.” Now comes a system of waterworks. The money and water are on hand. .Our efficient board of public works is wasting no time. It has had sur veys made, and is now waiting only for the engineer to come and adjust his surveys to present conditions. As soon us this is done work on Gaff- ney’s waterworks will bo commenced, and p shed with Gulfney's usual per sistence, until every nook and corner of the city is supplied with nature’s nectar, from nature’s deep reservoir. Gaffney’s water works will be on latest ami most approved plans, and of best material. A stand pipe with a capac ity of 300,000 gallons will he erected on an eminence in the city's suburbs, which stand fully a hundred feet above its business portion. The pipes will be judiciously laid, so as to give water lo every one who wants it, and to Hood any building in the city in case of fire. Our school buildingi will be es pecially provided for. I’uro water will permeate all the buildings and at tachments will always be at hand which will render serious damages to them by fire almost impossible.
