We learn that the county jail will be built this summer. Miss Kebecca Scott is now clerking for J. R. Tolleson <!c Co. Mr. Goudelock lias had several ap plications for liis new hotel. Lumber men report the roads as considerably improved this week. O. S. Kendrick is adding anotiier piazza to his already commodious residence. You had better pay your taxes be fore you have the penalty added for non-payment. Mrs. Harriet Petty has not yet heard any thing from her seventeen year old son George, who left home some weeks ago. A break of some minor part of the Carpet Mill engine on Wednesday caused suspension of work for a few days until the part could be replaced. 1). H. Turner is getting his mate rial together on his lot near N. C. Snead's residence for his new house. He bought ids entire bill of material from J. E. Ezell, Chief Engineer A. N. Molcsworth and Consulting Engineer Pecker, of the S. C. & G., extension, were in the city Wednesday looking over Capt. Kingsley’s new line. We have had fair and warm days this week which are drying things fast. The plows are in place and will be moved right off us soon as the ground is in condition. George Hood is placing material on his lot on Rutledge street to put into a house for ids own use. Mr. Tom Alexander will do the work, and wo learn that it will be quite handsome. J. S. Littlejohn, one of our leading merchants, is now getting material together on Ids pretty lot. corner of Buford and Petty streets, for his new house which the builders will be working on in a few days. Clierokee jail was only empty a low days. Magistrate Phillips com mitted a white man on Wednesday for selling whiskey, and we learn that State constables and county ofliciuls have their eyes on several others. We hud the pleasure tlds week of reading a letter from H. J. Sarratt, of Cherokee, who is now in Habanna, a number of the 1st N. C. Volunteers. Jack has proven himself a good sol dier and one that Cherokee is proud of. Mr. A. B. Gaines lias opened up a stock of furniture in the building formally occupied by S. B. Crawley & Co. Mr. Gaines has had a wide experience in the furniture business and we expect him to build up u good business. We are glad to note that Dr. C. M. Littlejohn, after an indisposition of several weeks, is again able to be among his patrons. Dr. Littlejohn enjoys a lucritive practice and is in every sense of the word a Christian gentleman who lias the cdh fide nee of the entire community. Superintendent of Education Mc Arthur lias been visiting the public schools in the county this week. He reports the attendance smaller than should be, whicli lie attributes to recent bad weather, but says he finds the teachers earnest in their work, and ho hopes much from the concien- cious manner in which they are dis charging their duties. The many surveys made by the S. C. Sc G., engineers, leaves oil in doubt us to the route the company will adopt in going out of the city. It will of course select the most economical one, and believing that the company lias no disposition to treat property holders otherwise than fairly, and that the property holders only want such treatment, we trust that the right of way will be secured without any delaying incidents. Messrs. J. Russell Sparks of this city, and St. John Butler, of Shelby, late with Harvey, Blair Sc Co., Rich mond. Vu., have formed a copartner- sliip for the conducting of a general commission business, with offices over Bridges Sc Beason’s store. Mr. Butler is a young gentlemen of pleasing address, while everybody knows “Rus." We wish them suc cess, . The Ut'ceplloii. The reception tendered to Mr. and Mrs. \V. Franklin Brown by Mr. and Mrs. W. Clark Carpenter on Tuesday evening was ono of the pronounced social events of the season* From 8:;{0 to 12 the hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter was filled with the admiring friends of the pop ular young couple. The spread was splendid, the conversation chic, and. all in all, the evening was most de lightfully spent. Mr. and Mrs. Car penter are ideal host and hostess and all who attended regretted the arrival of the hour for departure. Beaty, a prominent citizens of Cleveland county, N. C., was in the city the lust of the week, visiting liis grand daugliter Mrs. John W. Bridges. Perry Cudd, of Spartanburg, was in Gaffney Wednesday. A. X. Wood lias been on a visit to liis friend, Mr. Walter Morehead, at Mount Tabor, Union county. J. C. Jefferies Esq., went to State Line Wednesday on professional busi ness. A. C. Pridinore left a day or two ago on a visit to Baltimore. 1). J. Gullman, of Cowpens, came in to sec The Ledger while in the city Wednesday. Waddy Osment, of Etta Jane, was in the city Thursday. D. N. Fowler and John Sprouse, of Sunny Side, spent Wednesday night in Gaffney. They report no farm work in their section, but with a few more days of dry, warm weutlier every thing will be moving. They are botli workers. County Commissioner T. M. Lit- tlejohn was in the city Thursday. Mr. Littlejohn is one of Cherokee’s best men and. lias made a careful, painstaking, sensible county com missioner, and is one to whom the people can always safely trust the county’s interest. Maj. James F. Hurt, a distinguished officer of the Confederate army, and one of the most distinguished lawyers in the state, was in the city Wednes day on professional business. John Moore, of Buffalo, paid u bus iness visit to the city Ttlursduy. Mrs. Edwards, rue Miss Pearl Brown, of Columbia, arrived in the city Wednesday. Mrs. Edwards’ many friends in Gaffney gave her a cordial greeting and many are the expresions of pleasure because of her presence. Mrs. Edwards is at p-vsent the guest of Limestone College. M. Poliakoff lias returned from the eastern markets. Phillip Ray and Kin Davis were in the crowd in the city Thursday. Hon. C. W. Wiiisonant was in the city Wednesday looking none the worse of wear from his arduous duties in the House of Representa tives. Jas. L. Strain was in the city yes terday. Hamlet Lipscomb and Baxter Wood, two prominent merchants of Pacolet, wero in Gaifney Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Byars came up from their farm Wednesday, and will spend a few days at their city home. John Estes, of Etta Jano. was among his friends in the city Thurs day. E. K. Beluo and Maj. J. D. Ken nedy, two thriving business men of Blacksburg, were among their friends in Gaifney Wednesday. J. J. Biggerstff is in the city for'a few days. Joe Price and Black Scruggs culled to see us Thursday. Govan S. Blacrf, of Grassy 1’ond, came in to set The Ledger Wednes day. Mr. Black is one of fho best farmers in the county, makes every thing lie needs at home, lias killed meat enough to do him but will, about the middle of this month, kill one more big hog. The Memphis Cotton Planters’Jour nal reports that a cotton grower in Mississippi has trained 2(»0 African moneys to pick cotton.
