Cotton sold yebterday for G£. The township pension boards of the county met Saturday. Col. S. T. Ponier has been appointed Postmaster at Spartanburg. Capt. R. O. Sams is still confined to his home, on account of his woun ded foot. We hear that the wheat and fall oat crops were not damaged by the recent cold weather. The township board of equalization will meet in the Auditor’s office on Tuesday the 7th of March. After a few fair days the last of the week, the rain got in some good work, Saturday night and Sunday. The Townships Boards of Equala- tion will meet in the Auditor’s office on Tuesday the 7th day of March. Magistrate Wm. Phillips, who was recently appointed by Governor El- lerbe, lias received his commission. The city police scooped in seven of the old skin game gang a few days ago, and Mayor Littejohn pulled them for $2.50 each. 1L. K. Osborne’s handsome cottage, corm r of Johnson and Race street, is nearing completion and will add much to the already handsome appearance of the locality. Clingman Dorman, of Powells, sends to The Ledger office a curiosity in the shape of an eggs resembling a simbling very much, it is oval shaped with a handle. Broad River was out of the banks at Cherokee ford Monday morning, and too high at all the ferries for crossing. Cherokee creek was over the bottom lands to a considerable extent. .1. Rufus Pool has been appointed Magistrate in Gowdeysville township by Gov. Ellerbe, in place of J. L. Strain, Esq. Magistrate Pool was once Sheriff of Spartanburg county, and will make an efficient officer. Leonidur Morgan paid his respects to The Ledger yesterday. Mr. Mor gan has more credits on The Ledger’s subscription book than any other per son on our list. He always pays up promptly and invariably in advance. The store rooms in the Goudlock block, are about completed. Mr. Goudlock began moving his goods into the one he will occupy, Monday morning. The work on the hotel part, is being pushed as rapidly us the weather will permit. With Gaffney’s artisian well 420 feet deep and water running out at the top, the Messrs. Andrews resumed work Monday morning, going down deeper, with no lime or depth set to stop. They are after what Gaffney wants, a big supply of water. A. C. Pridmore Las sold his inter est in the “Corner Grocery” to his former partners. Mr. Pridmore is one of the most worthy and popular young men in th city. Coyle who has charge of the County Chair,gang, called to see us Monday dr.ruing. He says bad weather prevent him from doing much work but that his force is in good shape, and will make a showing when opportunity affords. Mr. John Jones of this city is tlie only man we have heard of who lias done any plowing since Christinas. He started one plow out on his farm Saturday. One of his neighbors said Mr. Jones was a mighty good farmer but he believed lie was plowing his land loo wet. Capt. C. L. Kingsley, field engin eer of the S. C. it G. t extension com pany, took the held Monday with his corps. He began his survey at this place and it is supposed will press right on to Spartanburg. Capt. Kingsley is a first class engineer and is well known in Gaffney. Sergeant Barnet Lipscomb, late of tlie heavy battery, who hits had some experience in railroading, belongs to tlie corps. Tlie rain sleet, snow and bad roads, have been keeping folks close at home in these parts lately. But the fine days of the latter part of last week opened things up and the people got hero Saturday. Our streets were crowded from the middle forenoon till night. Every quarter of Chero kee hud good delegations with us. All looked as busy as bees, and preserved that high degree of good order which alsvays prevails among a busy, working people. The mer chants were all on the move waiting on their customers, who were crowd ing their stores all day, and thus again giving to the city her usual good weather husino s appearance. Phillips, of Star Farm, was able to come to town Saturday, after being laid up several weeks with his foot, which lie had the mis fortune to cut very severely about seven weeks ago. Mr. Phillips paid his repects to The Ledger while here. S. M. {Littlejohn went to Spartan burg Sunday. A. X. Wood has been out of the city some days. Mr. Wood don’t always s»y when ho is going. Joe Hicks, of Ezell, was in the city Monday. Mr. J. D. Mabry, of Asbury, was in the city Saturday. Mr. Mabry is a true Ledgerite. He says he likes the semi-weekly better than tlie weekly, although lie was highly pleased with the weekly. J. H. Littlejohn a successful farmer of this county was in the city Sutur- nay selling cotton. Mrs. Cussie Wilkins, of Powells, paid The Ledger a visit Saturday. Mrs. Wilkins is an appreciated patron of Tlie Ledger, and talks business like a banker. Luther Guthery, of White Plains, came over to the city Saturday. Miss Mary Borders, of Earls, N. C., is in tiie city visiting her relatives, the Misses Hoppers, on Logan street. S. O. Walker, who has been buying cotton in Florence, h»s wound up his business there for this season and is now at home in Gaffney. Sid is a good cotton man and his many friends are glad to have him home again. M. M. Tate came up to the city Monday. Uncle Jimmy Roundtree was among his friends in tlie city Satur day. J. L. Clary who has served as a Cherokee county commissioner since its formation until tlie recent appoint ment of tlie Governor, paid The Led ger a visit Monday. Prof. Wm. L. Johnson has returned to Cincinnati, ()., where he has an engagement till fall, when he will return to Gaffney. The Professor lias hosts of friends here who regret his going. Frank McCluney, of Abingdon, was in to see Tlie Ledger yesterday. Mrs.P.A. (iardner, of Spartanburg, spent Saturday in the city. President J. R. Mack, of Limestone College, spent several days away last week. Charles F. Humphries, of Patter son Springs, X. C., was in tlie city Saturday. Mr. Humphries was raised near Gafiney, where lie lias many relatives and friends. Dr. Fitzhugh Hopper, who is now engaged in the drug business at Pac- olet, was in the city Sunday visiting his mother. Mr. Jim Lucas, of Blacksburg, who travels for a Xow England house, was in tlie city yesterday in the interest of his firm. Magistrate A. J. McCraw, came into tlie city Monday and paid his respects to The Ledger. Mrs. A. E. Lipscomb is visiting the family of Mr. Clias. Christman in Spartanburg. Oliver Humes, the efficient post master at State Line, came in to see The Ledger yesterday. He says The Ledger is a good one. Capt. J. B. Bell was in Charlotte. X. C., Saturday on professional busi ness. Wm. C. Thompson, who is mana ging Ids fatlier’s farms in York and Chester counties, was in the city yesterday. Clarence Turner, of Grassy Pond, spent a short time in the city Mon day. Mr. W. W. Keys, of tlie Baptist Courier, was at The Ledger office yesterday. We are always pleased to meet the brethren of the press. A Harris, of Algood, called to see The Ledger Saturday. Mr. Harris is extensively engaged in farming and makes his farms pay. Willie Jarret, a bright young man of Martinsville, called on Tlie Ledger. Monday. T. Jeff Hughes, of Gowdeysville, was in to sec The Ledger Saturday. Mrs. M. M. Tare and children of Webster who have been visiting relatives at Grover, returned to her home Monday. Miss Mary Brown went to Spartan burg Saturday to spend some time at he home of her sister Mrs. J. Mr. Tate re-enlisted with Tlie Ledger while here. Prater Smith, a thorough going young farmer of Blue Branch, was visiting in tlie city Monday. R. P. Roberts, of Cherokee Fulls, came over to Gaffney Saturday. Our worthy young townsman. Mr. J. C. Hollis, v. ho was employed in tlie engrossing department during the session of the general assembly, where he made a fine record, returned to the city Monday, where lie was cordially greeted by his many friends. Forest Austell, of Earls, N. C., was among his many friends in the city yesterday. T. J. Haines, of Asbury, honored Tlie Ledger with a visit Satur day. James M. McSwain, of Boiling Springs, X. C., while In the city Mon day paid The Ledger a visit. Jim is a frank and staunch young farmer, of high character, which makes business with him a pleasure. To tlie citizens of Gowdeysville town ship ;— In retiring from tho office of mag istrate, which 1 have hold for eleven years, 1 do so with a feeling of pro found gratitude to the good people of Gowdeysville township who have so continuously and cheerfully endorsed me for that menial yet important po sition. This mark of their esteem and con fidence in my ability is an honor of vhich anyone might feel proud. 1 curry with me ihe satisfaction of having at all times, and under all circumstances, tried to do my duty faithfully and without fear of or to anyone. I am not infallible—that I have made mistakes I don’t pretend to deny ; but they were “errors of tlie head and not of the heart.” To up hold the dignity of the law lias been my highest aim at all times,and in my efforts to execute that law in justice tempered with mercy I have sought the guidance of a divine hand. I defy the records of the courts— not only of this judicial circuit hut of tlie State—to show another baili wick, composed of tlie same number and kind of people, where less law lessness prevails than that over which I have hud the honor to preside. There is no reason why this state of afairs should not continue, and I bespeak for my successor, Col. J. R. Poole*, (who is well qualified and is a gentlemen in every sense of the word) tlie undivided efforts of the law abid ing people to make his administration an ideal one. I wish, also, to thank Solicitors J. K. Henery and O. L. Schumpert for tlie many courtesies they have shown me. both officially and individually; also to tlie members of bar at Gaff ney, Union, York and Spin tan burg, with whom I have had more or less official business, and who have (with out a single exception that I can re- colect) treated me with the utmost fairness, kindness and consideration for which I am truly grateful. With good will to all and malice to none I ask of those who through any act cf mine have suffered wrong (whether real or imaginary) a fair consideration and forgiveness. I do hope people everywhere will heartily support you, not only in a financial way, as I feel they will, bat tliat a very able and worthy corps of con tributors may be enlisted in your be half. One other tiling I cannot pass un noticed in this short note to you. I see in The Ledger that by a vote through influence of the council your enterprising town lias exempted from taxation, within corporate limits, for a term of five years, the Carpet Man ufacturing Co. This is I believe one of the most worthy moves Gaffney has ever made, and one I am satisfied which will in a few years bring de served growth and success to all tlie various industries in town. Xol only will your town receive a business boom but all business of every char acter throughout the county and ad jacent country will be greatly ad vanced. The people everywhere real ize that all railroads, all manufactur ing industries, all well constructed school houses, all places for the wor ship of God, and all well kept up pub lic highways, are only so many evi dences of a highly cultured and en lightened and progressive people. The various manufactories of your town have given an indisputable mar ket for everything in the hands of the people in this and surrounding coun ties that they can grow or have to sell, yet many farmers are seemingly indifferent to this fact, and almost seem to leave the impression abroad that no benefits accrue from them to the masses. Also I feel like congratulating our county supervisor upon the selection made by the Governor and legisla ture, of wise and discreet men. who in the future become his co-workers in managing the financial vffairs of our county. Surely it is not too much to expect from them at no very distant day splendid highways id travel from Maud, Algood, White Plains, Etta Jane and Blacksburg, not only these but those as well from less publicity. In short, Mr. Editor, our platform is growth, success, and moral and intellectual advancement for every section included within the limits of Cherokee county, then our slate, then our own America. L.
