The executive committee of the Cowpens Memorial Association will meet at the court house on the first Monday in March. We are glad to learn that John Blanton, who was accidentally shot while hunting during the snow, is rapidly recovering. Wm. Phillips lias been appointed magistrate in Gaffney in place of I. G. Surratt, Esq So far as wo have learned the magistrates in all the oth er townships remain. The farm wagons began to make their appearance on the streets again Saturday which began to revive busi ness from the zero stage which it as sumed during the zero days. Tom Gilmer, who lately returned fMtn Texas, lias accepted a position w»b W. O. Lipscomb & Hro., op their Railroad contract in the lower part of the State, as blacksmith. There was-an old fashioned “chop ping” at Mr. Dock Peeler’s near Maud last Saturday. Mr. Peeler's neighbors all helped, and it makes a newspaper man's mouth water to hear one of the choppers tell about the go:iu dinner and supper served by Mrs. Peeler. The gentleman who gave us the item regarding Mr. S. T. Reid, the bookkeeper for the Carpet mill, a couple of weeks ago was a little pre vious. Sam is home again and did not bring a wife. The boys could not resist the temptation qf playing a joke on the genial Sam. Comments on The Ledger. We herewith append some of the remarks made by friends and patrons of The Ledger in remitting for their paper: This from Clover: “I couldn’t well get along without your paper for you know Gaffney is like a home to me. May the Semi-Weekly prove a success and the people can’t help but like it because they get the news fresh. Wishing you, your pa per and city much success. I am, yours truly, etc.” This from Neches Texas: “The Ledger measures up first rate by the side of Texas and Texas is a “big ’un.” Success to you in your new enter prise—the Semi-Weekly. Respect fully, etc. From Lancaster: “I do want you to send me this week’s copy, as I have failed to get it—it is certainly a welcome visitor with us, etc. Death of Mr. XV. G. HolmeK. Mr. Wm. G. Holmes died Sunday at his home in this city, in his sev enty-second year. Mr. Holmes was born in the Cnion portion of Chero kee county and had many good traits of character. He entered the Confederate army ai a member of Capt. J. (J Carpenter’s Company, in the uth S. C. V'., in 1801, and made a good solder throughout the war. He leaves a widow and six children four sons and two daughters, Mrs. R. M. Woody and Mrs. W. P. Chap man. The remains were^ buried Monday in the family lot in Lime stone Cemetery. A short service was conducted at the grave by Rev. S. T # Creech. D,ir Adverttoera. A WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN THE WOODS Probably a Victim of the Storm King. DRESSED IN MALE ATTIRE OUSINESS MEN'S ASSOCIATION. It Met Friday Night in Mayor Littlejohn’s Office. SEVERAL NEW MEMBERS. The Evidence at the Coroner's Inquest Leads to the Conclusion that "Die Was De mented and Subject to Fits—The Erls- oner Kclcuscd. Sunday morning the city was some what startled by tho announcement that a negro woman had been found dead in the woods about one and a half miles east of tho city. Sheriff Thomas, with several others, at once went to the scene. The story, as well as could bo learned by a representative of The Ledger, is about as follows: Several weeks ago a one-legged negro man accompanied by a woman arrived in this community from Black- burg. They were tramps of the low est order and had only a short while before arrived in Blacksburg from a point in another part of the State. When they arrived here they began going about the colored population begging a nights lodging at first one place and another. Tito man gave his name as Eli Johnson and claimed the woman as his wife. From the evidence adduced it appears that both were somewhat demented. They finally located in a log cabin about a mile and a half east of the city which belongs to the Gaffney Land and Im provement Company. The house had been occupied by an old darkey named Rob Dover. Bob had left some things in the house. These the vagrants appropriated to their own use. Sunday night one week ago they had u dispute, says Eli. It seems that the woman wanted to go somewhere to get some money due her. The man did not want her to go on account of the very severe weather. The man finally went to bed, leaving the woman sitting by the lire. Finally he went to sleep. He did not wake up until morning. He then discovered that the woman was gone. He though nort cured nothing about it, lie says, because site had left him once before and had come back to him. It seems that after the woman left Eli did not stay at the house only at night and then ho went there very late and left early in the morning. As a consequence tho neighbors no ticed that no smoke came out of the chimney. They became suspicious and began to talk and investigate, but all that they could discover was that the woman was missing. Satur day. while an old colored woman who had just moved into the neigh borhood, was hunting for a spring she discovered a dead body in the woods. The body proved to be that of the missing woman. The mystery was hightened by the fact that the woman was attired in men’s clothes. Eli says that the woman was in the habit of donning men’s clothing in or der to disguise herself when she went out on a foraging exhibition and that on Monday morning when he awoke he discovered that a pair of his pants ftnd a coat were missing. Owing to the suspicious circum stances connected with the case Sheriff Thomas arrested Johnson and placed him in jail to await the devel- opements of tho coroner's inquest, and dispatched a messenger for Coro ner Vineset. Coroner Vineset reached the scene early enough Sunday afternoon to empannel a jury and have Dr. S. B. Crawley examine the body, when he adjourned the court to meet in the court house Monday morning at i) o’clock. On reassembling Dr. Craw ley was called to the stand. He tes tified that there were no signs of vio lence on the body. This testimony produced the general impression that the woman had frozen to death. A great mass of testimony of cir cumstances in connection with John son and the woman was brought out, but there was nothing elecitcd that could connect him with her death. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased came to her death from causes unknown to the jury. The coroner then ordered the prisoner discharged. The following composed the jury of inquest:—A. F. Kendrick, Fore man, H. M. Gaines, Z. Hope, John G. Spencer, T. T. Self, W. E. Nantz. J. G. Wolfe, L. O. Wood. J. F. Pat rick, James Driscoll, J. L. Butler and C. H. Brown. This was Coroner Vineset’s first case and he performed his duties like a veteran. Taking everything into considera tion the conclusion reach is that the woman donned the pants and coat in order to be made more comfortable on her journey. She then left the house. On reaching the spot where her dead body was fou..d she was overcome by the cold or had a lit—the last theory is the most probable—and froze to death before recovering her senses. Johnson says he was shot in the Ug at Tampa, Fla., about a year ago aud that he was afterward severely burned on the same leg and that the two ac cidents necessitated its amputation.
