Then you have the duty of the day, or perhaps several days, to plan out. But what if the butcher sends meat i u- masticable? What if tho grocer fur nishes your articles of food adulterated ? What if the piece of silver be lost, or a favorite chalice bo broken, or the roof leak, or tho plumbing fail, or any one of a thousand things occur ? No mat ter. Everything must bo ready. The spring is coming, and there must bo revolution in the family wardrobe, or the autumn is at hand, and you must shut out the northern blast. But how if the moth has preceded you to the chest ? How if the garments of tho last year do not lit the children now? What if all the fashions have changed ? Belief For Allmenti*. The house must he an extemporized apothecary's shop or dispensary; there must be relief for all styles of ailments; something to loosen tho croup, some thing to cool tho burn, something to poultice the inflammation, something to silence the jumping tooth, something to soothe the earache. It is often not only tho toil of tho housekeeping, bnt it is the sickness and the sorrow that go along. It is a simple fact that one-half of tho women of the land are invalids. The mountain lass who has never had an ache or a pain may con sider household work of no very great weariness, and at tho eventide may skip out to the fields and drive the cat tle home, and until 10 o’clock at night may fill the cabin with laugliingracket; bnt, oh, to do the hard work of tho household with a shattered constitu tion—after six weeks’ whooping cough has raged in the household, making the nights as sleepless as tho days—then it is not so easy! And then this work of the house has often to bo undertaken when tho nerves are shattered with some bereavement that has put desola tion ip every room of tho house and sent tho crib into the garret because its occupant has been hushed into a slum ber that needs no mother’s lullaby. Oh, it was a great dedl easier for her to brood the whole flock than to brood a part of them now ;bat the rest have gone! Yon may tell her that her departed children are in the bosom of a loving God, but, motherlike, she will brood both flocks, Xmtting one wing of care over tho flock in the house, putting the other wing of care over the flock in the grave. Noth ing but the old fashioned religion of Jesus Christ can take a woman happily through home trials. All these modern religions amount to nothing. They do not help. They do not r/ * ' ’ in the house. Away with them and give us the old fashioned religion of Jesus Christ, that has com forted so many in tho days of sorrow and trouble! Romance Will Not Suffice. Romance and novelty may for a lit tle while seam to be a substitute. The marriage day has only gone by, just gone by, and all household cures are atoned for by tho joy of being together and by the fact that when it is late at night it is not necessary to discuss whether it is time to go. All the mis haps of the newly married conplo in the way of household affairs are not matters of anxiety or reprehension, but merriment. The loaf of bread turned into a geological specimen, the slushy custards and jaundiced and measly b»- cnits. Oh, it is a very bright sunlight that falls upon the cutlery and mantel ornaments of a new home! Romance and novelty will do for a little while, bnt after awhile tho romance is all gone and there is a loaf to be made, a loaf that cannot be sweedened by any earthly condiments and cannot be fla vored with any earthly flavors and can not bo baked in any ordinary oven. It is the loaf of domestic happiness. All the ingredients from heaven. Fruit from the tree of life and sweetened with the new wine of the kingdom and baked in tho oven of homo trial. G«d only can moke that loaf. You can out it, but it tabes God to make it. Solomon wrote out of his own miser able experience—he had a wretched home; no man can bo happy with two wives, much less with 700, and out of his wretched experience he wrote—“Bet ter is a dinner of herbs where love is than a stalled ox and hatred there with.” Oh, the responsibilities of house keepers! Kiugi by their indigestion have lost empires and generals through indigestion havo lost battles. One of the great statisticians says that out of 1,000 unmarried men 00 were crimi nals, and o^tof 1,000 married men only 18 were criminals, showing the power home. We all say “Bravo!” *fcr that lad. Bravo i That is the spirit of Christ I Splendid! How much scourg ing, how much chastisement, how much anguish will you and I take for others? Oh, that we might have something of that boy's spirit I Aye, that wo might have something of the spirit of Jesus Christ; for in all our occupations and trades and businesses, and all our life— home life, foreign life—wo are to re member that the sacrifice for others will soon be over. qf A Good I.0MHon For the Navy. It has been said that Commodore Dewey sought to obtain the command of the Asiatic statien because ho foresaw tho opportunity that was to come to him. I» one sease this is true. Dewey has always been a man of action, a nat ural fighter. That he went gladly to the East Indies command, when at least two other flag officers could havo had it if they had wanted it, and that ho preferred taking service 'afloat to any kind of comfortable duty on shore, is true. But it was the seaman’s instinct that led him rather thtm any prophetio power. There were several questions of grave importance likely to come bsforo the country, and Commodore Dewey knew that the man in command at sea is the man who is in a position to make opportunities for himself, while the men who cling to easy billets ashore must— when warcloudsthreaten—stand around and wait for chances to come t’o them. ' that put .t George Dewey in command in m! It was the logical working out of the principles of a lifetime. The men who had always had sufficient influence to keep them in time of peace in easy places in New York and Washington, while others did tho hard work of tho service a-t sea, discovered that all their influence could not give them tho placoi of danger and of honor in time of war.
