English was huightened by the tx-
prcsi-ivi ness of his face uml the sym
pathetic quality and admirable
modulation of his voice.
The views presented by Col. Bacon
were of the past and of the present.
The story of the faithful “mummy”
of his childhood, from the time when
j in the heyday of her strength and i
! power, she dominated the household,
old and young,^white and black, even
to the point of revising the “Bis-
cople” catechism, to her death-bed
and to file torchiit funeral in the
forest, was touchingly und truthfully
tol.i, and the picture of the colored
•queen of the kitchen” of today was
drawn with a strong hand and from
tike life.
But Col. Bacon is a very versatile
man. His sketches are not only of
the home and fireside, but of the |
madding”—ihe swirl and hush, the
squeeze and crush of the ball room,
.ake the little lord, hepells of whis
pered conversations in conservatories,
of couples that “sit out” in window
seals. And ih m he goes shopping!
le is a ladies man and he revels in
ruching and lingerie. A conserva
tive ladies man, however, and not
a dress reformer, he clings to the
kirts of forty-five years ago and
balks at bloomers, though hearing
the tramp of the coming woman, he
very gracefully casted an anchor to
wind ward and paid a handsome tri-
jute to Mrs. Virginia D. Young, the
advanced woman suffragist.
As a lecturer, Col. Bacon is a dis
tinct success. Even to the young
and thoughtless he must be enter
taining, but to those of us with
memories, to hear him is to turn
over slowly the perfumed pages of a
oved and long unopened book—a
jock of poems.—Columbia State.
Col. Bacon will lecture in this city
tomorrow night at the Gaffney Semi
nary under the auspices of the La
dies Aid Society of the Presbyterian
church. We can assure all who at
tend that they will spend a most de-
ightful evening. Mr. Bacon should
)e greeted with a large audience and
we trust all Gaffney will avail itself
of this rare opportunity to hear a
rare man on u rare subject.
Snow.
Last Friday the cold wave signal
was hoisted. In a few hours it was
preceptibly colder and the ebuds her
gan to gather. By night the clouds
were thick and tho temperature had
fallen enough to make people gather
around the home fires early. Satur
day morning the ground was covered
with snow and it. was still falling,
and continued to do so until one
o’clock p. in., by which time the
snow was about four inches deep but
melting. The ,sun came cut and
furnished fine prospects for a good
supply of mud for some days.

Some of the negroes who went
from here to Dunbarton, in the lower

them put up for getting goods under
false pretenses. The scheme to
them, seemed a good one, but may
prove rather serious.

Though ils offensive features
are sometime* almost unbearable,
few people are aware of the danger
of which Catarrh is the forerun
ner. Catarrh invariably leads to
Consumption. Growing worse and
worse each winter, those who rely
upon the usual treatment of
sprays, washes and inhaling mix
tures find that it is impossible to
check the disease with these local
applications which only reach the
surface. The ofTensive discharge
increases ail the while, causing a
feeling of personal defilement, and
get s deeper and deeper until it is
only a question of a short time
until the lungs are affected.
The importance of the proper
treatment can therefore be readily
appreciated. But no good what
ever can be expected from local
applications, as such treatment
never did cure Catarrh, and never
will.
“I had such a severe case of Catarrh
that I lost my hearing in one ear, and
part of the bone in my nose sloughed
off. I was constantly treated with
sprays and washes, but each winter
the disease seemed to have a firmer
hold on me. I had finally lieen de
clared incurable when I decided to
try S. S. S. it seemed to get right at
the seat of the disease, and cured me
permanently, for 1 have hud no touch
of Catarrh for seven years.
“MkH. JOHKIMIINK PoLIULL,
“Due West, S. C.”
Those who have had the first
touch of Catarrh
will save endless
suffering by tak
ing the right
remedy at tho
outset. Others
who have for
years sought re
lief and found only disappoint
ment in local treatment will find
it wise to waste no further timo
on sprays, washes, inhaling mix
tures, etc., which are only tempo
rary and can not save them from
Consumption. Catarrh is a deep-
seated blood disease. S. S. S. is
the only remedy which can reach
the very bottom of tho disease
and cure it permanently.
