And justly and admirably so. He has culled this music judi ciously, has himself contributed to it many works of genuine distinction in their way, and always of spontan eous vigor and melodic freshness, and thereupon he has directed his pro grams with a tact, refinement and in spiring glow. Kousa set for himself a standard not too high or too low; he has succeeded in elevating this standard beyond its average poss - bilities, and in giving the public pro grams which the musician need not feel ashamed to enjoy anything so efficiently and artistically performed. Sousa and his band will be heard in a grand concert on Thursday, Jan uary 26th, 18911, at Converse College, Spartanburg S. C. His great band was never in as fine form as at present and the Sousa instrumentalists respond in perfect accord with the minu of the master musician in control. The programe for this concert will be a most en joyable and satisfactory blend of the popular and substantial music of the times, and the audience can rely upon a large installment of the most inspiring music af modern times— the famous Sousa marches. The soloists with Sousa and his band ere Miss Maud Reese Davies, soprano; Miss Jennie Hoyle, vio- liniste, and Mr. Arthur Pryor, trom bonist, all artists of unquestioned brilliance. He is apparently about oO years old, and is a man of great in tellectual, physical and moral power —an honor to bis race and to his state. He asserted that he was here to speak from an honest heart, and did not hope to escape criticism from both races, but before he would speak anything but the truth us he saw it, he would be us dumb as a lamb on the alter. The whites had been blamed for the manner in which they had treated the negroes just after the war. It was impossible for them to have treated the negroes differently, The treatment was the result oi the edu cation of the whites. They had been treat before them in the future. Pol. His playing although of the most advanced modern style, is, like everything he says and do^s, ex ceedingly original. As a lecturer, Col. bacon is undoubtedly the com ing man, if indeed he is not already come, Col. Bacon’s life record is a very noble one. He deserves the most exalted measures of success. Col. Bacon’s delivery is us quaint and charming us the subject matter of his address. He cannot fail to please.” Col. Bacon will lecture in this city in the auditorium of the Gaffney Seminary Friday evening February Hrd, under the auspices of the Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian church. Auditor. higher plane, and it was morally im possible for them to get down to the plane of the negrojuud become bis associate or even his leader. His remarks on social equality or unequality were pointed and line. He showed the negroes that tnere were social inequalities among them, and in illustrating his assertion he brought down the house. He said that all men are not born free and equal. All were created equal, but birth is an accident—the color of the negro is an accident. He emphasized the fact that all are created equal, but unequalities must arise from accidents, environments and education. These must all be distinguished from the gifts of a Heavenly Father. Negroes should overcome the results of accident arid rise above their environments. Their first object should be to secure land and keep it for their children. Hecond, we must ail learn how to live in love. In urging this point he speak eloquently of the command ment, “Love thy neighber as thy-, self,” and exhorted the negroes to so conduct themselves as to gain the sympathy and respect of the white people and not to expect help from beyond the Potomac. Third, they must ask the white people for more school months and better teachers. It is to the inter est of the whites to grant these. There must be a community of inter est, a reciprocity of feeling between the two races. This country is the home of both races. The negro can not And a better place in the world. Don’t try to do like the white man in every respect. Many white men make two dollars and ppend three. The negro can’t afford to follow him along that line. He rasped the ex travagance of the country and de clared that but for the boundless nat ural resources of the country and the kind climate both races would long ago have been fit subjects for the poor house. Each negro and white man should have an object in life. If the negro didn’t like his surroundings he should strive to make them better or move to another state. But he appealed to both races to pull together for the upbuilding of South Carolina. The tone of the whole address was ex cellent, and we trust that it will do much good. His appeal for har mony and kind feeling was eloquent and pathetic. A few more such men as Miller among the negroes would prove to be a great up-lifting power for the race. Down at Dunbarton. In a private letter to k The Ledger from Dunbarton, S. C., Mr. \V. (>. Lipscomb says: "We are moving along very well. I was glad to see the water works bonds sold well. You cun tell the girls that I think ‘Bob’ will stay in this country. He says tell the Gaff ney girls good bye.
