Wook and the National Bank of Gaffney will close at 3 o’clock. W. A Turner has contracted with Baker <fc Lomaster to build a six room cottage on his North Limestone street property. The Limestone College fund is growing. Mr. H. D. Wheat has given $500 and others are giving liberally in proportion to their means. Mr. Jesse Gore and Miss Annie Matthis, both of this city, were mar ried on the llth inst.. at the Baptist parsonage by Rev. B. P. Robertson. Mr. W. C. Carpenter, who has been confined to his home several days recently, is able to he out. Will’s many friends will note this with pleasure. Bethel Baptist Church, colored, was visited by its new pastor for the ensuing year last Sunday week. Rev. II. I). Sunders is one among our ablest colored ministers. We had plenty of rain Monday and Tuesday, winding up with a gusty clearing up shower Tuesday evening. Yesterday came fair and bright, but with muddy streets and roads to mar its beauty. Rev. J. I). McCullough, I). D., will hold service in the Episcopal church next Sunday at 4 o’clock p. m. Dr. McCullough . 1ms many friends in Gaffney who will he pleased to have him with us. Col. Samuel Jefferies has pur chased quite a lot of handsome new' furniture for the Lipscomb Hotel of Carroll, Carpenter <fc Humphries. The hotel has been newly painted and otherwise improved. Rev. A. D. Davidson and Miss Car rie Vastjey were married near Thiek- ety on the 20th instant. Mr. David son is one of Cherokee’s most popu lar clergymen and his worthy bride is one of her most popular young ladies. From The Lantern we learn that Miss Fanny Fort, of this city, took a prominent, part in a progressive cake walk in Chester lust week. The Lan tern says Miss Fort “got the ear of the audience in a recitation most gracefully rendered.” Mr. Jesse Eubanks and Miss Estell Huskey were married on the 14th inst., at the residence of the bride’s parents in this city by Rev. B. P. Robertson. Mr. Eubanks is a prom inent mill man and has captured one of Gaffney’s most charming young ladies. A small dog, a pet of Mr. Rufus Littlejohn’s family, apparently went mad last Thursday and bit several dogs and a little girl on her way from school before it could be killed. The child was promptly treated by .Drs. Crawley and Nesbitt and it is hoped that no serious trouble will result. Baker it Lemastcr have commenced work on their big contract for forty, six room cottages for the Gaffney Manufacturing Company. They now- have their big shed up, their ma chinery in place and a large force of men moving, which, under I heir di rection, will do some hustling. Mr. Nance is one of Cherokee's live-at-home farmers, whose high character en dears him lo all who know him, W. H. Mercer, a prominent citizen of Blacksburg, was in iho city but- urduy on business. R. C., Jan. 25—The present General Assembly, for kill ing many bills in their infancy, is of ten referred to as an able boJy and is getting along with businesn fairly well. Air. McCraw’s bicycle bill, which caused considerable debate and some merriment, was recommitted to the committee on roads and bridges and ' after amendment was .avorubly re- 1 ported. On the 23rd Air. Whisonsnt intro- | duced a bill, to apply the provisions I of article 2 of chapter XXXIV of the 1 Revised Statutes of 1893. on drainage 1 in certain counties, to Cherokee county. Senator Sarratt introduced a bill to discontinue and abandon the old Cherokee ford road t hrough Gaffney. On Monday Hon. Wm. A. Neal was defeated for superintendent of the penitentiary by Col. D. J. Griffith, of Lexington, by a crushing majority. Griffitli receiving on the final ballot % votes and Neal 28, with some scut- j tering. After this there was a terriffic con-1 test for the five year term on the hoard of control. In which T. Chris, Robinson of Pickens defeated Dou- 1 tbit by two votes, Robinson receiv- ing 78 votes and Douthit 7fi. V«\ T. O’Dell and A. K. Perry Andrews and brother got their drilling plant;erected and every thing in shape Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock and kindly notified the manager of The Ledger that they were about to begin to drill the deep hole in ihe ground from which we ail hope lo get a supply of pure water, and in sufficient quantities to sup ply the city for many years to come. We were soon rm the ground, the steam was turned on, the great wheels which put the drill in motion began to turn, the drill began to as cend and descend, and the work was begun. Gaffney expects to derive much benefit from this well and we trust, that wt* will not be disappointed. The Messrs. Andrews are gentle men of long experience in Ihoir busi ness and know what to do lo gel 'a hole in Ihe ground,” as they are pleased to term it.
