erty on (Mkey creek, in this county,
and will build a roller mill in time

A Quiet Home Wedding Tuesday eve

At the home of the bride’s parents,
on (irenard street, in this city, Tues
day evening Mr. Harry C. Knox and
Miss Eva Parker were united in wed
lock by the Kev. H. 1*. Robertson, of
the First Haptist Ohurcli. The cere
mony was witnessed by a number of
the relatives and intimate Iriends of
the contracting parties. After the
ceremony a reception was tendered
the newly married couple.
The bride is one of the most at
tractive young ladies in Gaffney.
For some time she lias been engaged
in I lie establishment of J. R. lolle-
son it Go. She is a young lady of
amiable disposition end lias not only
won tlie heart of her husband hut of
all others with whom she has come
in contact, hut not so effectually.
Mr. Knox came to Gaffney more
than a year ago and bus made many
friends by his manly conduct and
winning ways. He is a most orter-
prising gentleman and hits given Gaff
ney one of the linest tonsoriul par
lors in the state.
The Ledger joins the many friends
of the happy young couple in wish
ing them a smooth, pleasant and safe
journey^filled with immeasurable love
and happiness, over the matrimonial
sea.
Cowpens Celebration.
The people in the vicinity of the
Cowpens battle ground are preparing
to celebrate the il'Jth anniversary of
the battle fought at that place, on
Tuesday the 17th inst. The celebra
tion this year will he one of an initi
atory character, which is intended to
formulate plans which will secure a |
celebration in the future of each sue- !
feeding anniversary of this important j
battle of the revolution, which was'
fought on ground now in Cherokee j
county, and which is held sacred in ;
the hearts of all patriotic Americans, j
On that ground the heroic deeds I
performed were not confined to men j
of this section alone. On that his
toric field that day with our own peo
ple was Daniel Morgan, an Eastern
man, but a citizen of Virginia at the
time. So also was Howard with his
Continentals,the invulnert.hle“Mary-
land Line,” Triplet with Ids heroic
and liberty loving Virginians, and
Clark with his valorous Georgians,
always ready fighters for freedom.
Then comes our own Pickens, Col.
Win. Washington, Cols. Rrandon,
Thomas Roebuck and Farr, Majs.
Joseph McJunkin and many others
with their noble followers, whom,
did space permit, we would delight
to mention.
Cherokee. Spartanburg, Union,
York and adjacent North Carolina
counties are covered all over with
the descendants of participants in
the battle of Cowpens, and we trust
they will he present and join in com
memorating the glorious deeds of
their ancestors, and in taking steps
to place them and the Cowpens bat
tle ground in the place in history
that they merit.
We would be glad to see the de
scendants of Dr. John Whelchel
Cupt. Hughes, Capt. Wm. Giles, Col.
Win. Farr, Maj. Joseph |McJunkin,
Wm. and Peter Sartor, Adam Skain,
John Skain, John Savage and Nathan
Hyars, all of whom fought, and some
died on the Cowpens battlefield, he
present on the 17th as well as the
descendants of hundreds of others,
equally us worthy, that we do not
know o r , but who fought there tha‘,
day also. Attend all.of you. The ob
ject is a worthy one, and should re
ceive the encouragement and support
of all Cherokee people.
Mrs. Osborne’s Grandfather Dead.
Hon. John Westmoreland, one of
the oldest and most distinguished cit
izens of (ireen ville county,died on the
(Jth inst in the ninety first year of his
age.
Mr. Westmoreland had held many
important offices of honor and trust
and was distinguished for his high
Christian ant! moral character, lie
was the grandfather of Mrs ILK.
Osborne of this city and was a near
relation of Rev, H. P. Robertson pas
tor of the first Baptist church here.

Committed to Jail.
Htate Constable John Petty,of Paco-
let mill, was in the city Monday. He
brought along with him two young
white men charged with selling whis
key. Magistrate Surratt committed
one of them to jail, to await trial at
court, the other one was able to give
bond.
Constable Petty is a special offiicer
and a most ifficent one, which makes
him a terror to all violators of the
law.

Death of Miss Christina A. Reep.
Miss Christina A. Keep died at the
home of her grandmother Mrs. Aaron
Self on the lird inst and was buried at
Corinth in the presence of her many
sorrowing relatives and friends. Miss
Reep was^ a consistent member of the
Methodist church and died firmly re
lying on her faith in the Redeemer.
The services were conducted by R-v.
H. T. Creech.

A New Code.
City attorney J. C. Jefferies is pre
paring u new code ofjlaws for the city,
which will he published soon.
Citizens B. and L. Association.
The Citizens Huilding and Loan
Association of Gaffney began its sixth
series this week. Quite a number of
udditiouial shares were taken in tho
new series. The association is in a
most flourishing condition and is
proving a fine investment for those
who have stock in it. At present it
has about two hundred stockholders.
It started business three years ago
without a cent and now has Jjilo.OOO
loaned. All this money has been in
vested in Gaffney real estate and has
addl’d much to the advancement and
the material prosperity of Gaffney.

farmer who has had much to do with

Death of Mrs. Jane Stacy.
.Mrs. Jane Stacy, wife of Mr. Sam
uel A. Stacy, died at their home six
miles west of the citj - on the 4th,
inst., in the fifly-ninth year of her
age. She leaves her husband and
seven children to mourn her death.
Mrs. Stacy had many fine traits of
character which endeared her t» her
family and neighbors. She will ! e
missed for she was indeed “a help
mete.”
