this city, of which it will take some

The pastor of the lirst Baptist
church will call the attention of his
hearers next Sunday to matters of
importance, to the spiritual interest
of Gaffney. He hopes to have a large
attendance at both services.
The Literary club will hold its reg
ular meeting next Tuesday evejting at
S o’clock, the subject for discussion
will be “American Patriotism.”
“What is real patriotism,” will be
the leading thought. We hope to
have many visitors present.
(ieorge Huffman, a colored school
teacher in this county, was commit
ted Ito jail Tuesday, by Magistrate
Surratt, charged with criminal assault
on the person of Sonora Corry, the
eight year old child of Mose Corry.
The child was a pupil of Huffman.
Dr. Wm. B. Nott. of Union, died on
the 4th inst. Dr. Nott was a promis
ing young physician,' his attainments,
high character and genial disposi
tion made him a general favorite.
He was a son of Dr. T. E. Nott, now of
Spartanburg, and belonged to that
old and highly respected Nott family
generation which many have made

A Word to the Women.
It is not to say, “the hand that
rocks the era lie rules the world” al
though that is true. It is to con-
trider for a moment our value as a
factor in the prosperity and business
in and around Gaffney. 1 don't be
lieve that it is the railroads, the
schools or oilier institutions of the
town that have built it up and sus
tained it, but’the trade; the every-day
consuption of what the merchants
have to sell. And it is woman not
man that holds this trade in the hol
low of tier hand. Man may think he
is the biggest pebble on the beach,
the Lord of creation, because he votes
and makes u big fuss about election
time but this doesn’t add one dollar
to the trade of the town. Every man
is controlled by some woman and
most of his purchases are influenced
by Iter tastes. The fact is recognized
by the merchants, and hundreds of
dollars are spent each year in adver
tising goods that ure to be bought
and used by women. So you see,
dear women, that lb? prosperity of
the town is largely in our hands. If
we will read the advertisements in
The Ledger we will tind that about
everything we need is kept in Gaffney,
and now that the holidays ure over
and the trade for that purpose is done
and we ure starting out on another
year, let us draw the strings on our
little purses and say, ‘ I will not go in
debt this year nor buy anything un
less I surely need it.” Consider well
then before buying for very often we
think we need when we can do with
out, by doing this we may save many
hard thoughts and even hard words
and come out a great deal better in
the end.
