Emancipation Celebration.
The colored people celebrated
emancipation day in this city in a
lilting and proper manner. The
celebration was held at Dunton’s
Chapel, and was largely attended.
Revs. R. C. Campbell and A. K.
Wright wore the orators of the day.
These two colored ministers have
the interest of their people at heart
and are doing ail in their power to
advance the race along proper lines.
The advice given Monday was timely
and will do good if followed. Every
thing passed off quietly and the best
of order was maintained.
College Girls Return.
The Limestone college girls com
menced returning Monday, and have
been arriving on every train since.
Most of them are now in and every
thing in the college is moving on as
smoothly as the best regulated ma
chinery. Gaffney is proud of Lime
stone. It is a grand old institution
and has its admirers all over our
Southland.
Blood Hounds Here.
The blood hounds ordered by the
city some time ago, arrived Tuesday.
Chief Camp has charge of them, and
when the necessity arrises he can
always ho found, and only asks tl.a'
people stand back and give the dogs
a chance.

Mrs. Lucinda Turner Dead. >
On lust Saturday morning death
entered the home of \V. (’. Hamrick
on Limestone street and claimed as
its victim Mrs. Lucindia Turner.
About a month ago Mrs. Turner came
to visit her youngest daughter, Mrs.
Hamrick, and while there was taken
with erysipelas and after two week’s
suffering, during which time loving
hands administered seemingly all the
earthly kindness possible, her soul
was wafted tot he great beyond.
Deceased was born within a few
miles of the city about seventy-live
years ago, being a member of the
well known family of Humphries
who are now so numerous in our
county.
The last years of her long life were
spent in trying to lead people to be
and do better.
During her illness she gave ex
pression that her hope was anchored
into a better world. The remains
were embalmed by Undertaker Gaines
and on Monday morning was borne
by a special train to K ,rls. X. C.. and
interred in the Xew Hope cemetery
beside those of her husband.

He Marries Many People.
Rev T. H. Mullinax, of Grover,
honored The Ledger with a visit Fri
day. He lives in a prosperous town,
in a rich section in which the young

New Necessities.
The Gaffney Manufacturing Co., on
account of increasing business, has
found it necessary to make prepara-
ration to run its whole plant day and
night. And to that end Tuesday let
a contract to Baker A Lamaster to
build forty, six room cottages to be
occupied by the new help that will
he necessary.
This move on the part of the com
pany show>|subsiantial progress along
the right line and will add about one
thousand good working people to our
presentjpopulation,every one of whom
will receive a hearty welcome by our
appreciative people.

Waterworks Bonds Sold.
The bids for the $18,000 five per
cent. Gaffney city waterworks bonds,
were opened at 12 o’clock Tuesday in
Wood’s bank. F. M. Stafford, of
Chattanooga, Tenn., got them at
$10.>.20-100. This is considered a good
deal, and while all the gentlemen
connected with it have shown com
mendable zeal, much credit is due to
Messrs. A. X. Wood and L. Baker for
their intelligent and untiring work
in connection with it.
The sale of these bonds shows that
our city finances are in good shape,
and that our city bonds are eargerly
sought.

Literary Society.
Prof. Reg H. Griffith of Furman
I’niversity delivered an enteresting
address before the Gaffney Literary
Society (Tuesday evening, The ad
dress showed that it was the result
of study and delighted the Profes
sor’s many friends in Gaffney.
After the address refreshments
wore served, and, taken all together,
the occassion was one of the most
pleasant of recent occurence.
Dr. R. W. Sanders.
Dr. R. W. Sanders, of Greenville,
has been culled by the Limestone
Baptist church for this year, and will
preach his first sermon on next Sun
day at 11 o’clock a. in.
Dr. Sanders is well known by our
people and we congratulate Limestone
church in securing his valuable ser
vices.
A Good Showing.
Out of an assessment of about
$.>1,000 in this county, Treasurer
Jones has collected fully $50,000.
This is a good showing for five cents
cotton times.

I think more of The Ledger than
any paper to which I subscribe. It
seems to meet all demands and to
give all the news of Cherokee.
Vour correspondent spent Christ
mas at Gowdeyville with Mr. and
Mrs. J. H. Bently. During the
holidays the serenuders came around.
I am glad to say they were not
permitted to enter Mr. Bently’s home.
They were drinking and using profane
language. Mrs. Bently advised them
to get away from her house and they
followed her advice. 1 was sorry to
see those boys in such a lix, and 1
am glad to say I was not in the
crowd.

Cowpens Battle Celebration.
The patriotic people of the Cow-
pens Battle ground section of this
county, are clearing off the old
ground preparatory to celebrating the
119th aniversary of the Cowpens
battle, on Tuesday the 17th of this
month. They are aiming on that
day to take such steps as will secure
the proper observation of the dav in
the future. Col. H. P. Griffith has
been requested to address the people
on that occasion. All are invited,
descendents of soldiers of the Revo
lution especially.

Buffalo School House.
1 lie people of Buffalo have recently
built one of the best school houses in
the county, and have supplied it
with all modern fixtures. It is pre
sided over by Kev. and Mrs Ham
rick.
This school house, if there was
nothing else, shows the high grade
of our Buffalo fellow citizens, and at
once marks them a people for Ghero*
keo to he proud of.
