The News from Town and Country Boiled Down for the Special Benefit of Busy Led ger Readers. Miss Eunice Peeler has accepted the school at Glendale and has gone to take charge of it. Mr. Cobb, a prominent Gaffney Mill man, is building a handsome residence out on Cherokee street. The Literary Club will hold an im portant meeting Friday evening at 8 o’clock. All members are urged to be present. J. R. Service and Samuel Peterson, of Mercer, this year, with one horse, made eleven bales of cotton and 140 bushels of corn. Ex-Sheriff J. B. Ross has a con tract to grade a portion of the new railroad near Denmark, this state, and left a few days ago. Mr. Ross is an old railroaderand knows his business. E. B. Dawkins, one of Cherokee's progressive colored farmers, killed a hog this season which tipped the beam at 343. That is not the largest reported but is a pretty good sized hog just the same. Next Sabbath morning at the First Baptist church Rev. B. P. Robertson will preach on “Christ’s Dependance on Men.’’ In the evening the sub ject will be “The force of habit.’’ Mr. Robertson desires a full atten dance of the members. A cordial invitation is extended to all who desire to attend. Owing to a rush of work The Led ger’s efficient and obliging, carrier, Mr. Willie Darby, did not get around at the usual time with his carrier’s address. He will, however, call upon his patrons one day this week and we trust those whom he serves will treat him kindly. Understand noth ing given to him goes to this office. It is simply a Christinas gift to the carrier and is a custom which is fol lowed in all cities. Comments On The Ledger. The Gaffney Ledger, one of the very best weeklies in South Carolina, has issued a handsome illustrated Christmas number, devoted not only to the usual subjects of the season but to the exploitation of its nourish ing town and county. Mr. Ed. II. DeCamp, its proprietor, who was long connected with The State, has shown unusual grasp of the possibilities of weekly journalism, and his paper, editorially, typographically and in its news feature, is a credit to the new county of Cherokee.—The State. The Gaffney Ledger, of December 22nd, is creditably illustrated with cuts of many prominent men, the court house, and the carpet factory. Ex-Sheriff John M. Nichols and family, of Spartanburg, spent Tues day in the city, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Carroll. George B. Estes, of Brookston, Tex., arrived in the city lust Thursday night. Mr Estes is of that worthy old Estes family of the eastern part of Cherokee and has many friends here. He has been in Texas five years and is lavish in his praise of his Texas home. Mr. Colwell, tlic efficient salesman in the Cherokee Falls Company store paid The Ledger a visit Friday. J. J. Warren visited old friends in Gastonia this week. Joe Littlejohn, Lewis Wood and Dever Little who are students in the State University, arrived in the city Friday, where they wdl spend the holidays with their parents. Clarence Jones, a Wofford college student, come home Friday to spend the holidays with his parents. George Huggins, of Lawn, was in the city Saturday. J. 1’. White, of Yorkville, was in the city to-day. Uncle Bryant Fowler, of Ravenna, was among the throng in the city Fri day. Messrs J. J. Gibbons and son, John, und W. T. Parker, of Grover, were in the city yesterday. Mr. Gibbons is one of The Ledger’s best friends in northern part of Cherokee and we are always glad to welcome him and his friends. David Fowler, one of the working Fowler boys from Sunny Side, spent last Thursday night in the city. S. A. Stacy came in to see us Sat urday while taking in Gaffney. W. H. Crocker, of Thickety, made a visit to the city Friday. Rev. B. P. Robertson went to Cow- pens Tuesday where he delivered a lecture before the Masonic Lodge on the Eastern Star degree and also con ferred the degree. Dr. Southard, a prominent physi cian of Jonesville, was in the city Tuesday. W. L. Goudelock, of Gowdeysville, a prominent Cherokee funner, was in the city Saturday. Russell Sparks has been out of the city and says ho went to see his “best girl.” S. S. Littlejohn, of Ravenna, paid The Ledger u pleasant visit Tuesday. J. W. Allgood, of Cherokee Falls, came in to see us Saturday. Eugene Palmer, one of the bright young men connected with the Car pet mill, left Friday for Philadelphia to visit relatives. Mr. Palmer will return in a few days and we trust will bring some other young men like him. The only Harp Vinson, of Pacolet, or any other place, was in the city last Thursday. Miss Mattie Blanton, who is living in Lancaster, spent the holidays with her parents near the city. Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Lemond, of Spartanburg, visited Mrs. Lemond’s parents on Race street this week. J. W. Blackwell, of Mercer, paid The Ledger a visit while in the city Saturday. Boyd Sarratt. who has spent a year with his brother in the Indian Terri tory, is back in.Gaffney on a visit to his parents and his many friends who gave him a hearty welcome. John Estes, a stuidy Cherokee farmer from Etta June, was in the city Saturday. J. F. Moore, of Grover, paid The Ledger an appreciated visit Tuesday. Park Thompson is home for the holidays from the Baltimore Dental College where he is taking his third course. 0yE. K. Misses Mag, Vick, and Herbert Amos, of Spartanburg, are visiting their uncle, Mr. Teck Wilkins, corner Logan and Frederick streets. Louie Haygood, of Gastonia, was in the city Sunday, the guest of his uncle, R. O. Sams. Basil Petit, of White Plains, was among the visitors in the city Satur day. Fitzhugh Hopper, one of Gaffney’s most popular young men but now a drug man of Rock Hill, spent part of the holidays with his mother in Gaffney. We are all glad to see Fitz. D. A. Hoyle, of Buffalo, called to see us yesterday. £;Mr. Ed Bridges, of Blacksburg, come over to the city last Thursday on business. Billy Peden, a popular young man of Concord, was in the city Sunday. Henry Lockhart, a Gaffney boy who has been living some years in Texas, returned to his old home Fri day on a visit to his mother. Henry is un all round good fellow, and has hosts of friends here who are making his stay ut home an extra pleasant one. F. C. Bates, a popular young man. of Madden, was in to see The Ledger yesterday. T. C. Wood, a thrifty young farmer of Grassy Pond, came in to see The Ledger while in the city last Thurs day. Miss Lelu Morgan, Miss Sula Good- lett und Paul Morgan are spending the holidays in Greenville. Paul V. Gullney, the energetic traveling salesman of the Gaffney Carpet Mills, got homo Friday after a most successful trip. Mr. Gaffney reports large sales, Increasing de mands and Gaffney Carpet Mill car pets as “the thing.” Prof. Claud McArthur, who baa charge of one of the schools at Clif ton, came home and spent Christ mas with his father. Prof. W. F. McArthur. J. M. Martin, of Blacksburg, was in the city yesterday. John Moore, a worthy young man from Buffalo, was on a business trip to the city Saturday. Carl Sarratt has been on a visit to his sister, near Grover. Mr. C. H. Lavender, of Ezells, was among The Ledger’s callers yester day. James B. Richardson, who is buy ing cotton in Florence this winter, is spending the holidays with his parents in the city. Jim has a host of friends here. Frank Beam, a large planter from Grindrll, called on The Ledger while in the city Tuesday, and presented us with a beautiful Indian relic. Anthony Sarratt came home last Thursday from Clemson. Anthony is an excellent young man. and all his home people are his friends. J as. Fate Lenneman in a drunken family row Tuesday evening knocked his wife down with a chair inflicting a severe wound. Lenneman was committed to jail to await the next term of court. Uncle Hugh Moore, one of Chero kee’s old and most respected citizen called on The Ledger yesterday. J. Wess McKown, of Smiths Ford. York county, was in the city Tuesday on a visit to his brother Mr. Jas. McKown, on Frederick street. C. A. Petty, a prominent cotton man of Augusta, Ga., is in the city this week among his relatives and friends. O. A. Osborne, a prominent busi ness man of Blacksburg, spent a short time in the city Tuesday. Mr. W. J. Thomas, of Thickety. was among The Ledger’s callers yes terday. Air. Montgomery, Ala., Dec. 17.—Gov ernor Johnston in an interview toda*' said: “The recent war shows how necessary it is to have a well organized and disciplined body of state troops ready for instant service.
