We hear of hard times, and five cents cotton, but everything is moving along quietly but steadily in Gaffney and Cherokee county. In the city buildings of every descrip tion from tbe ordinary cottage to the mammoth three story brick block are going up, streets are being improved and waterworks are looked for among the next great city improvements. In tbe county farm buildings are being built and repaired, and from every section we hear of new resi dences going up. They are not of the cabin style, but are of a sub stantial character and modern architectural beauty. Our farmers are intent on im proving their lands, have adopted latest methods and are supplying themselves with improved imple ments as fust as their circumstances will permit. Cherokee is dotted all over with churches and school houses, and Supervisor Lipscomb is putting our public roads in a condition that the county is justly proud of. A Stove. Thsre is now in use in Richardson’s wagon shops in Gaffney a heating stove which was made at the Cow- pens Furnace, seven miles above here, fully thirty-five years ago. Ic is one of the best stoves in the county to day and lias been in use all the time since it was made. Cowpens Furnace belongs to the past, but this stove, its product, i« with us yet, a monu ment to old time enterprise in tins section, and shows its present possi bilities. We doubt if there is another stove in the State which has done survice so long, and still perfect as this one is. Blind Tigers. The suspected presence of '‘Blind Tigers” in the city, is agirtating the public a little. Every effort should be used to suppress them if they exist. THE OLD AND THE YOUNG. Both are Cut Down in Life and Called Home. Mr. B. F. Holmes, one of Gaffneys oldest and most highly respected citi zens died Friday at 7 o’clock p. m. Mr. Holmes was born in that part of Union county which now is in Chero kee nearly sixty four years ago. His long life had been spent in a man ner that secured the confidence and esteem of all with whom he came in contact. In all the vicissitudes of life he was just what he appeared to be. an unpretending, honest, straight forward Christain gentleman. He was a faithful and gallant soldier in the confederate army and had been a member of the Methodist Church since his childhood, was ever strong in faith and was faithful to his pro fession. He often held important offices in his church and the Sunday school in which he always took great interest. Mr. Holmes was twice married and to him by the two unions sixteen children were born, all except two of whom servive him. The funeral services were conducted on Saturday afternoon in the First Methodist church by Rev. S. T. Creech of the Second Methodist church, who was assisted by Rev. T. M. Dent, of the First Methodist, and Rev. B. 1\ Robertson of the First Bap tist church. The services were very appropriate, befitting the end of a life like that of Mr. Holmes, and was at tended by many of Mr. Holmes sor rowing relatives and friends. The remains were buried in the family lot in Limestone Cemetery. The pall bearers were A. X. Wood, J. V. Sarratt, D. J. Holt, J. S. Lit tlejohn, L. Baker and W. F. Mc Arthur. Hyder Farrow Is Dead. Hyder Farrow, youngest son of Col. T. Stobo Farrow, and one of Gaffney’s brightest and most highly esteemed young men, died at the residence of his father, corner Lime stone and Buford streets Wednesday the 20th inst. about j o’clock in the afternoon of typhoid fever. Mr. Farrow was taken side some weeks ago in Augusta Ga., where he was at work, and at once returned to his home in this city where he lingered for weeks under the kind and offic- tionate care and attention of his devoted father, sisters and. brother, and the best physicians of this sec tion with whom hope lingered till the fell destroyer’s work was done. The funeral services were con ducted in the Presbyterian church Thursday morning by the pastor.Rev. C. E. Robinson, after which Mr. Far row’s remains were carried to Spar tanburg and buried in the family lot L. the old cemetery by the side of his mother. The pall bearers were Col. T. B. Butler, Col. J.G. Wardlaw.- F. G. Stacy, A. C. Pridmore, E. L. Eison and C. T. Price Thus a promising ing life has closed amid surroundings that made it most dear. But He wno gave has taken away. His will be done. And may His supporting hand comfort the bereaved, who have the sympathy of their numerous friends. —— Carroll & Carpenter. A visit to the establishment of the above named merchants furnishes a revelation. You see in their mam moth structure one of the largest ag gregations of general merchandise in the State. But is the result of the hard, unrelenting work of two men, who years ago when they were young ventured into it with little capital beside their good sense, strong arms, indomitable will and their determination to succeed. Carroll it Carpenter’s success shows the young what work will do, to the world the great possibilities in Gaffney and gives to The Ledger the pleasant but unasked for privilege of the above reference to them. PAINE AT COLUMBIA. Waterworks Assurred. The Board of Commissions of Publicworks of Gaffney have deter mined to put in a complete system of waterworks in the city. Mr. Frederick Minshall a competent and well known engineer in thi* State, has been employed and will go to work at once and prepare plans and specifications for the system. The commissioners will then be ready to receive bids for the work. The source of supply will be a bored well which will be bored near the Court house. The stand pipe will be erected on some eminence yet to be selected. Thus one of Gaffney’s greatest needs will be put in the line of progress which her growing inter est demands. The Excellent Program of Fireworks tor Fair Weeks. The following is the program of tbe grand fireworks display on the occa sion of the State Fair at Columbia: 1. Salute of two aerial guns, tired from fifteen inch mortars. 2. Illumination of the grounds with powerful colored lights, changing color five times. 3. Ascent of two balloons, carry ing magnesium lights, flooding the entire neighborhood with dazzling light, finishing with a string of jew els 100 feet long, constantly chang ing color as they float throughjspace, and other pleasing fireworks. 4. Display of fifty one and two pound rockets, containing Paine’s famous Manhattan Beach combina tions, and fired so as to blend tbe con tinued varied tints. 5. Flying pigeons of fire, crossing and recrossing the grounds. (>. Two batteries of large Saucis- sons. 7. Salvoe of five fifteen inch bombs, with latest novelties and effects. 8. Flight of three rockets contain ing twin parachutes. 9. Six rayonet tourbillons or um brellas of fire in ascent and descent. 10. The Star Spangled banner in lire. There are fifty-one numbers on the program, which includes portraits of celebrated men and women, naval and military officials, etc. The last num ber on the program is the famous re production of the battle of Manilla Bay between the Spanish and Ameri can fleets, the greatest fireworiis spec tacle ever presented to the people of the South. This portion of the dis play alone occupies a half hour or more and is alone worth a trip to Co lumbia. Special trains on all the roads will be held until the fireworks display is over. Comfortable seats will be pro vided for the spectators.. Big Business. While some talk blind tiger the dispensary sold six hundred dollars worth of the ‘‘chemically pure” last week.
