In speaking of Mr. Joe Wood, whose death was noted in last week’s paper, Mr. John Millwood, with whom he boarded, took occasion one day last week to say: “Joe boarded at my house lor over a year. ! He was an excellent young man. He had by his amiable disposition endeared himself to me and I loved him almost like a son. Why Not Let'the World Know Who What We Are. Perhaps the moat interesting single exhibit at the Pittsburg Exposition this year, is to be found in the foyer of the main building. It occupies the entire room, and is the result of years of patient collecting. It illus trates the natural wealth of a wonder ful. and as yet but. little developed section of this great country. Ihe •Southern Railway owns the exhibit, and has made it much more compre hensive this year than ever before. It is made up of commonplace things, bits of stone, slabs of wood in natural hnish. specimens of minerals, grain, fruits, vegetables, photographs of scenery and buildings. All these go to give some idea of the country which the Southern Railway is de veloping. The display catches the thinking people; those who go to the expo sition to learn something, as well as to be amused. They find in the dia- play of these common things a most wonderful encyclopedia of nature. They see for themselves how cotton grows, and have impressed on their minds that gold is found in paying quantities along the Southern Rail way. They begin to grasp the fact that tne iron-producing regions of Alabama may some day contest with Pittsburg for supremacy in the indus trial race. They see what a wonder ful range of agricultural products the South has. They wonder, aomtimee, what will be the effect on the less f jrtile North, when ihe people of this f ivnred region awaken to industrial and agricultural activity, and when cipital begins to develop the South on the same scale that it has already developedvthe North. The Pittsburg News, issue on Sep tember 21. contains the above in teresting mention of the Southern Railway’s exhibit at the Pittsburg Exposition. The Land and Industrial Agent of tha Southern advises that they can distribute, to advantage, from this exhibit practical and attractive litera ture issued by cities, towns and dis tricts along the Southern Ralway set ting forth the advantages of the sec tion represented. The Railway Com pany is reaching a large number of people with their elective publica tions, giving general facts and infor mation about the country through which the Southern runs. Here is a chance for the citizens of Cherokee county and vicinity to do some local work. Printed mutter should be sent by express through the Southern’s local agent to M. V. Richards, Land and Industrial Agent, Southern Railway, Washington, I). C., who will place the mutter in the exhibit at Pittsburg and elsewhere. Thrown From Their Cart. Tuesday morning Misses Birdie and Pearl Crawley drove down to Limestone in their curt. They had nearly reached the college when the dummy came along. The pony at tached to the cart became frightened and ran, throwing the occupants out. Pearl was quite severely hurt about the head. Birdie escaped unhurt. These little girts are two of the brightest little ladies in the city and their many friends will be pleased to learn that the accident was not more serious. Frightened by a Mad Dog. On September 29th the daughter of Mr. William Muliinax, of the King’s Creek neighborhood started from her home to a neighbor’s house. She had not gone far when she met a bench legged flee in the road that displayed evidences of hydrophobia. She started hack to the house and was pursued by the dog, which chased her aoout four hundred yards. Just as she entered the door the dog readied the steps. Mr Muliinax, Riley McDaniel, Noah Wisher, and Win. Manning went in pursuit of the dog. The canine was killed as he at tempted to cross King’s Creek. Commissioners of Election. Oone to the Citadel. Earnest Peeler, who reseived the appointment from Cherokee county to the Citadel at Charleston, left Mon day for that. city.
