Shipp, from the Chewalla Cotton Mill, Eufaula, Ala., has been engaged as superintendent of the Norris Cotton Mills, Cateechee, S. C., and will take charge about the 1st of Oct. S. C. Smyly goes to Clemsow Textile School as practical instructor as soon as he is relieved by Mr. Shipp. There have been few changes in overseers at “ither the thre*- mills af the Paeolet, S.C., manufacturing Co., for five years. In the weaving depart ment J. T. Jackson gave up No. 3 mill three years ago to become super intendent at Lockhart, while J. H. Thomas left the oversuership of spin ning in Nos. 1 and 2 mills in July this year, and was succeeded by W. W. Lookman. C. A. Moore is general superinten dent at L’acolet. His other overseers The Long Island, X. C., Cottorlf are as follows: At Nos. 1 and 2, YV. Hambrick is carder, L. YV*. Davis, Mill CftW has been putting in a now forebay. J. L. Scott. Jr., treasurer Sidney Mills; and A. L. Bain, super intendent Oneida Mills, Graham, X. C., are alternates to the convention. 1*. A. McOraw has taken cliarge of the weaving room of the Gastonia, X. C , manufacturing Co., which is re starting its 131) looms. Mr. YfcGraw has oO looms running on t»8x70 goods 39 inch* s wide and reports the w&rns to be running good. The balance of the looms are b ing started as fast as warps are j.irovidcd. R. F. Futnurn is loom lixi The veteran slasher tender li. X. Herndon, is in charge of that department, while E. C. Mr- Alpine is the cloth room man. The Mutual Fire Co., of the Ander son, S. (! , Gotton Mills have estab lished a library and reading room for the members of the company anti the employes of f in* cot ton mills. They have provid’d the current literature, and have a very fair selection of books already donated. To this they will add more, fanning an excellent little library. W. li. Roberts, the super intendent of th« mill*. Is interesting himself in this lyoeum. which will be both entertaining atid instructive to tbs employes of the company. J. H. M. Beaty l«ft the Norris Cotton Mills Cateechee, S. C., on the 20th to take charge of his new duties at Clemson Textile School. On leav ing he was presented by the operati ves with a beautiful gold watch chain and also a gold stud which was very pretty. The duty involved upon Col. D. K. Norris, president, to present the gift, which he did with beautiful words. Mr. Beaty made few remarks of thanks and appreciation of the motive which actuated the gift, etc. 8. C. Sisyly is superintendent of the mill both day and night, pro tempero. The Cuban question and political issues sink iuco insignificance with the man who suffers from piles. Editor :—An a Prohlbitioniak in the strictest sense and a member of a Christian church I went for light to the Book o! Books. To quote all I find against the use of "wine or strong drink.” is too great a tasl^and I shall not attempt it. All through the sacred pages from Genesis to Revelation are warnings against it; curses pronounced upon those “who rise up early to follow after it,” or. “putteth the bottle to his neighbors mouth,” but, not in a single instance is any one made re sponsible for a sick man not having it. On the contrary, in all the heal ing of the sick by Jesus Christ, not once does He use or demand the pres- esce of wine even. ‘‘Am I my brothers keeper?” Yes! And when I vote to legalize traffic in liquor, and afterward find through its agency an immortal soul hurled into an awful eternity, in a drunken riot; I shuddtr at the burden of responsibility laid upon me. But if by my vote a prohibitory law be en acted and a soul reformed to make a family and home happy I can lay my head in ease at night and say, Thank God!” But should one sick, die for the need of strong drink only the physical body dieth; but if my vote is used in aiding to damn the soul of thou^mds, how much greater is my condemnation? All authorities noted by me con cede the fact that "wine” spoken of in the Scripture was infermented juice of grapes, not corn or rye whiskey! And when Paul said, "drink no water, but take a little wine for thy stomachs sake, and thy often in firmity,” he did not mean the dam nable stuff of ihe present, whiMi Satan is faithfully employing to corrupt the world and destroy the soul ol men. Ah me! the poor pitiful excuses framed in taking that little for the "stomachs sake.” The veriest sot on the face of Gods green earth can truthfully say he takes it for that. Memory goes back to a time when a tsn year old lad I saw a loved friend lying stark and still in a pool of blood, drawn by his own hand in a drunken frenzy. There was a lesson never to be for gotten. Prohibition would be of no benefit to me whatever for I do earn estly thank God for a father who taught me from iny earliest recoi led ion to loathe* and abhor the vile stuff. But. thinking of many friends, who are destroying their manhood, wrecking happy homes, and going down lo a drunken hell, 1 am ready to cry; down with and bmiuh it.
