Boiled Down for the Special
Benefit of Busy Led
ger Readers.
Mrs. E. A. George presented Thk
Ledger with the champion cucumber
of the season last week. It measured
fourteen inches and weighed 3$
pounds.
The regular services at the First
Baptist Church next Sabbath will be
conducted by the pastor, Rev. B. F.
Robertson. A cordial invitation is
extended to the public to attend these
services.
The Ledgsk is indebted to Mrs. 8.
A. Chambers for a fine specimen of
apples which were grown on her place
near Brevard. N. C. They were extra
large and of most excellent flavor,
equaling if not surpasting any apple
shipped to this market.
At the campaign meeting at Kings
Creek Monday the candidates were
royally treated. AH the stores were
closed for the occasion and the good
citizens prepared and entertained the
candidates at dinner, it was one of
the most pleasant meetings of the
campaign.
There will be services at the First
Methoiftet Church next Sabbath mor
ning and evening by the pastor. Rev.
T. M. Qgnt. evening sermon
will b^’fW the special benefit of the
young men and a special invitation
is extended to them to attend. The-
public are invited to both services.
A regular communication of
Granard Lodge, No. 186, Ancient
Freemasons, will be held next Mon
day night, September Sth, when the
E. A. degree will be conferred upon
two candidates and the F. C. degree
upon one candidate. Refreshments
will be served and there will be a
phonographic entertainment “bo-
tween the acts,” all free *of''charge.
Visiting brethren are fraternally and
cordially invited to be present.
Work will begin promptly at 8.30.
Death of Miss Mattie McKown.
Tuesday afternoon at four o’clock
Miss Mattie McKown, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. James McKown de
parted this life after an illness of
several weeks. The cause of death
was typhoid fever.
Miss McKown was one of the fair
est and most lovable young ladies in
the county. It has been but a few
short months since her parents moved
to this city from the WilkinsViHe
neighborhood.
Since her residence in the city she
has added many friends to her long
list of acquaintances by her amiable
disposition and queenly manners.
Her parents have the sympathy of a
large circle of friends and acquain
tances in their hour of trouble.
The funeral services were held in
.the First Baptist church yesterday
afternoon. The interment took place
at Limestone cemetery.
The Campaigners at Gaffney.
The candidates for county office
met in the court house in this city
Saturday. There was a Iqrge crowd
present to hear the boys present their
claims. The crowd generally gave
good attention and behaved them
selves as becoming true citizens. It
was evident, however, that there was
some whiskey present. Wc saw
evidences of treating on the part of
certain candidates. The candidates
themselves did not handle the whis
key, but had their henchmen to
do their dirty work. When will we
be able to rise above such methods?
Surely the day is not for distanst
when men who oiler themselves for
office must do so on their merits
and not by debauching their fellow-
man.
Co-Operative Revival Services.
The ministers of the various
denominations in the city held ‘ u
meeting Tuesday morning and deter
mined to hold a co-operative series
of revival services beginning the
second Sunday night in September in
the court house. The ministers
solicit the co-operation of all the
citizens of the community to the end
that the meeting may be a success.
The choirs of the different churches
will have charge of the music and
they solicit the aid of all the con
secrated musical talent in the city.
Rev. B. P. Robertson is chairman of
the association during this special
service and would be glad to enter
tain any suggestions that would tend
to the best interest of the meetng.

A Ferocious Amazon.
Wednesday night Officer Bert Hall-
jnan went to arrest an obstreperous
colored female by th^name of Mamie
Osborne«wlio had taken orra super
fluous quantity o* “fuss X.” The
officer found his prisoner somewhat
hard to bundle so he called to his as
sistance Mr. John Hammet, a well
known pa’inter. This infuriated the
AmazoiWto such an extent that she
prodyccd a pocket knife and pro
ceeded to carve her captors in a truly
barbarious style. Mr. Hajlman was
cut on the arm but not seriously
hurt. Mi. Hammett was seriously
cut about the thigh and will be con
fined to his beM for some days. The-
prisoner was finally landed in tHe
tombs. Thursday morning Mayor
Littlejohn paid kis respects to the
lady to the tuno of $60 or sixty days.
She took the sixty days and is now
in durance vile.

Ledger has been ‘‘taken in”—in
other words we have allowed our
selves to be imposed upon by another
vfake show ” We confess it with
some shame-facedness. The men who
represented the Columbia Cienograph
Company were smooth talkers and *re
were ignoramuses enough to believe
them what they said and urcordingly
gave a pretty good notice cf their en-
tertaiiunenbin advance. The exhibi
tion may have pleased some but it did
not please all who attended. Neither
did it please a majority- of those wfio
dClouded.^The gentlemen who opera
ted the machine seemed deficient in
experience audf lost much time in'
presenting the pictures. The focus
was b4d and the whole thing seemed
to be but of plum.
