Operations Have Been Commenced
and Carpets Are Being Made.
It is with some feeling of pride we
are enabled to announce to our read
ers that the Gallney Carpet Manu
facturing Company are now in full
operation. This is one of the most
remarkable building achievements in
in the history of modern times. On
the 1th day of June the first prelimi
nary steps were taken towards the
building the mill. On that day the
first dirt was moved. On the 16th of
August the first piece of carpet was
woven. Just two months and twelve
days from the day the first dirt was
moved a carpet was made. How is
that for swift building and all round
hustling?
This enterprise is a new departure
for the South. In fact this is the
only carpet mill south of Baltimore.
Already the mill lias sold all the car
pets it can make in the next six
months.
Mr. Bierck, the manager, is a gen
tleman of wide experience along tills
line and he knows his business. He
has associated with him some of the
best carpet men in the north. These
gentlemen will push the business for
all it is worth.
The rapid completion of the plant
is due to the perseverance of Messrs.
Baker & Lemaster and I>. K. Cecil,
the contractor and builders. They
have pushed their work with great
vigor.
The plant is a model one in every
respect. We have heard it said that
the mill building is the most modern
in the South. Everything has been
under the personal supervision of Mr.
Bierck, and he has seen to it that it
was done with a view to convenience.
We have in The Lldoek office the
very first piece of carpet wove. It is
the lowest grade that will be made,
yet it is a fair quality. We are in-
. formed that the company will operate
principally on a medium grade of
goods, but will also make a fine grade.
We wish the new enterprise all the
success possible.
To Move.
One week from today The Ledger
will move into new quarters next to
iho po.stof'ice. The Ledger has oc
cupied the building it is now in ior
four and tv half years. We hope to
get settled down into our new quar
ters and stay there until we are able
to build a handsome home of our own,
and if the good people stick to us in
the future as they have in the past—
for all of which we are duly appreci
ative—we may some day be able to
dedicate a handsome home to our
own use. However, that is but a
dream unless some of the delinquent
subscribers come up more promptly.
Awake us from that dream and wo
will appreciate that, too.
Honor for South Carolina.
In a private communication to
friends in this city Mr. C. (J. Krvin
who is now stationed at Camp Cuba
Libre, Jacksonville, Fla., says:
“The First South Carolina Regi
ment has the honor of being tbe best
drilled regiment in the field today.
Everybody in Florida.says so. We
came out second in Chickumuugn,
and our band came out first. The
reason our regiment did not come out
first was that someone in the regi
ment had on citizen clothes, and they
turned us down on that. But that
was all they could find against us ”

A Desperate Deed."
Friday afternoon a negro by the
name of John Jefferies, who had been
separated from his wife, went to see
her at the home of Isiah Corry, who
lives on land belonging to the Gaff
ney Land and Improvement Com
pany, and endeavored to pUrsuade
her to return to him. His pursuas-
ive powers were not adequate so he
determined to use force. Bulling out
a pistol he began to shoot at bis
wife. He manage^ to hit her one
time, inflicting a flesh w«rind in the
arm. In his wildness, however, he
shot three of Isiah’s children. They
were nine years, four years and nine
months old, respectively. Only flesh
wounds were inflicted on each of
them. Jefferies, believing, no doubt ,
that he had killed the woman and
children, went to a branch about a
fourth of a mile distant, put the point
of the pistol barrel in his mouth and
put a ball through his head. He
succeeded in killing himself, but
fortunately did no serious damage to
any one else.
Coroner McCraw held an inquest
Saturday. Dr. S. B. Crawley, as
sisted by Dr. Xesbit, made the post
mortem examination. The verdict
was to the effect that the deceased
came to his death from a pistol shot
wound inflicted by his own hand.

Captured.
Some time in June a negro man
named Morris killed another negro
man named Camp in this county,
since which time Morris has been
at large until Saturday when he was
arrested and lodged in jail by Mr.
Win. Phillips.
A reward offered by the Governor
and published in The Ledger on
Thursday morning did the work in
less than forty-eight hours.
The Next Term of Court.
The September term of court for
Cherokee county convenes next Mon-1
day week, Judge Gage, of Chester,
presiding. Judge Gage is a new
judge, having been elected by the
lust General Assembly. This term
of court gives promise of being a very
interesting one. There will be one
case of murder besides a number of
minor criminal cases.

Death ot a Child.
Wallace the youngest child of Mr
and Mrs. T. H. Westrope, on Vic
toria Avenue, died last Friday evening
between eight and nine o’clock after a
few days of illness from membranous
croup, and was buried at Limestone
cemetery on Sunday. Services were

and neighbors. Mr. and Mrs. West-
rope have the sympathy of their
many friends here.

Two Difficulties.
Friday evening David DeStaffino
and George Wilson got into a diffi
culty. during the course of which
David, following the example of his
Biblical namesake, proceeded to slay
his antagonist with a stone. Wilson
was painfully but not seriously hurt.
James Wiley and Ben Holmes en
gaged in a difficulty Saturday night,
in which the latter was pretty se
verely hurt by being hit with a rock.
Wiley was arrested and placed in the
guard house to await the result of
Holmes’ Injury.
