Our farmers have commenced to pull fodder and With good weather will have an immense yield. Corn and cotton are both of large growth and promises a big crop un less the wet weather causes the cot ton to drop its fruit. There will be services at the Epis copal church next Sabbath afternoon at G o’clock by Rev \V. Beean. Everybody is cordially invited. On Monday night September 5th Rev. S. T. Creech will begin a series of meetings at Sardis. He will bo assisted by Rev. John M. DesChamps. The festival given by the Ladies’ Aid Society of the Methodist church last Saturday was a pronounced suc cess. t^uite a neat sum was realized. On next Tuesday afternoon and evening the Cherokee Drug Co., will have a bulletin board, on which the reports from the different precincts be posted. Mrs. G. L. Bagwell and Mrs. H. E. Toole brought to Thk Ledger office Tuesday a specimen of an ornamental pea which measured twenty-four inches. It is the longest pea we have ever seen. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Millwood have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in the death of their infant which occurred Friday. The re mains were taken to the former home of Mr. and Mrs. Millwood Saturday for interment. Mr. C. M. SmithJ the local agent of the Pope Manufacturing Company, has one of that company’s latest pro ductions in the bicycle line. It is a Chainless Columbia, and for style and quality it surpasses anything in the bicycle line in this city. As an ad mirer said of it fche other day, “It is a Slick duck.” One can ride a hill with much more ease than he can with one of the ordinary wheels. It kills but never cures. The performance was most creditable, each participant rendering their part in excellent style. The concert was given at the instigation of Miss Fannie Ward- law, one of the most enthusiastic workers in the church. The whole program was a gem, but one or two pieces deserve special mention. One of these was the vocal duet by Mrs. Frank Laney and Miss Rosa Gaffney, their beautiful voices blending in per fect harmony throughout, and re minded one of the enchanting music of the Gods. Tho vocal solos by Mrs. Allein and Mrs. Laney were also ren dered with fine effect. Mrs. Allein has a voice of extreme culture and wide compass, and Mrs. Laney has sung herself into the hearts of her playmates long ago and now goes on winning new laurels with her voice pf wonderful sweetness. Mr. Julian Lipscomb also added much to the evening’s enjoyment by lending his line baritone. Much credit is also due Miss Anna Hames in arranging and carrying ont the program. After the concert “frozen dainties” were served on the church lawn, from which quite a nice sum was realized. Altogether it was a social and finan cial success and we can only say, re peat in the near future. Know and People Don’t Know. Col. J. W. Cugle, one of Greenville s most progressive contractors and builders, was in the city Friday on business. J. Landrum Brown, of Charlotte, was in the city several days the past week. He came to see his brother and sister, who have been quite sick. Mr. and Mrs. B. L Hames. went to Jonesville, last Saturday, on a short visit to Mr. Hames’ parents. Thomas B. Hughey, a prominent planter of Mercer, was in the city Monday on business. Mr. Henry Addis, of Webster, was in the city Tuesday on business. Mr. Addis is one of The LKDGKii’s goad friends and it is a pleasure to have him call. Rev. J. N. Isom, of Kelton, was in the city Monday. He is a genial Christian gentleman and one who it is a pleasure to meet. Call again Mr. Isom. R. E. Porter, one of the most in fluential and progressing farmers, of the Buffalo neighborhood, was in the city a few hours Tuesday. Mr. W. H. Smith, our hustling hardware man, left yesterday for New York and other points north, where he goes to buy goods. He will be gone about a week. Miss Emma Linder, a charming young lady of Hartwell, Ga., is a guest at the Lipscomb Hotel. C. S. Elam spent Tuesday in the city among his many friends. Mr. Elam was formerly bookkeeper for the store of the Gaffney Manufac turing Co., and has a host of friends here who kre always glad to see him. Jno. E. Mosteller, cl Grassy Pond, was in the city Tuesday on business. Mr. J. A. Carroll, accompanied by his daughter, Miss Minnie, left for New York and other points north last Sunday. Mr. Carroll goes to buy his fall goods and they will be gone about ten days. Mr. R. B. Spears, a prominent mer chant of Lockhart, was in the city last Monday on business. Mrs. A. R. N. Folger, who has been visiting relatives at Easley, returned last Saturday. Mr. D. L. Brown, a prominent mer chant of Blacksburg, was in the city a few hours last Friday. Mr. Fred Hollis, formerly a Gaff ney boy. but now of Greenville, was in the city last Sunday visiting his aunt, Mrs. Senora Grey, on Logan street. We are glad to note that Victor Gaffney, who has been quite sick at bis home on Grenard street, is out on W. 2:110 a on the N. Hamrick, of this City, Sustains a Broken Leg. Saturday morning about north bound freight train Southern road ran into a washout a short distance this side of Gastonia. Several cars were wrecked. A young man named W. N. Hamrick, a son of Street Overseer S. Y. Hamrick, of this city, together with two young white men and two negroes, was on the train. Mr. Hamrick was se riously but not fatally injured. His left leg was broke in two places, both bones just about the ankle being broken, while one bone about the knee was broken. The right leg was terribly bruised. The injured man was taken to Gastonia where he recieved medical treatment and was shown all possible kindness by the good peo ple of that town. He was brought to this city on the afternoon pas senger train, accompanied by his father, who went to Kings Mountain to meet him. A Ledger representative called on Mr. Hamrick yesterday morning and found him resting easily. Tho two young white men and one of the negroes were also hurt, but not seriously. Mr. Hamrick is duly appreciative of kindness shown him by the peo ple of Gastonia. A NEW "TRIUMPH. The Picnic. The picnic at Cherokee park last Friday was a failure in point of at tendance. Then, to cap the climax, the railroad people made it more dis appointing. When asked if they would run a train the agent said yes and that he would run one at 10 o’clock to bring the crowd back. The crowd was to small to warrant the road to run the extra train at night hence all had to come back on the regular train at 5:30. On this train several young folks went to the park from Blacksburg. When the Gaffney crowd had to go off the Blacksburgers did not understand it. It was a disappointment all round. The next time we advertise that a train will run at night we will have ample reason to believe that it will be done. The Columbia Ciueograph Com pany, under the direction of the La- aie’s Aid Society of the Presbyterian church, gave an entertainmenb last night to a full house which was much enjoyed by all present. The program conaisted principally of war scenes in life motion, although many others of great interest were shown, which heartily pleased all present. The great battleship Maine as she left the United States for the lust time and on which the sailors could plainly be seen busily at work and the Ameroian flag proudly wav ing at the top of the flag mast was an inspiring scene and one long to be remembered. The pictures of such officers as Dewey, Schley. Lee, etc., were vociferously received. Klon dike was also showed in grand effect and the hardships of the gold fevered seekers plainly painted out. Gaffney, manager of the grocery department at Henrietta Mills, N. C., spent a few hours in the city last Friday. Mr. J. Frank Laney. a prominent railroad man. of Monroe, N. C.. spent Thursday and Friday in the city vis iting his wife and children who are here on a visit to Mrs. Lunev's mother, Mrs. R. M. Gaffney, on Gre nard street. Mrs. Barnett Tolleson and children of Enoree. spent several days this week with Mr. and Mrs. \V. W. Thomas on Victoria Avenue. Among The Ledger callers Tues day were Miss M. E. Durham and “Pupil,” of State Line. We are al ways pleased to welcome such visi tors. Mr. W. 0. Lipscomb returned Tuesday from Asheville, N. C., where he has been visiting his family for several days past. Mrs. 8. T. Creech returned Monday from a visit to Kelton. Mr. C. A. Petty, who has been so journing in this vicinity for several weeks with friends and relatives, left yesterday for Augusta, where he goes to resume his duties in the cot ton office of Sloan & Co. A Shooting Scrape. Andy Fortenbery. a well known blacksmith of this city, and David DeStaffino, u well known character, engaged in a difficulty Monday. Andy is a somewhat larger man than David and In order to make things more equal David pulled his little gun and plugged Andy in the arm. The wound is not serious and Andy will, in all probability be able to re sume his work in a short time. Remarkable Rescue. That It shall tie unlawful for any person or persons, firm or firms, corporation or corporations to Interfere with, or obstruct the scavenger in the discharge of Ills duties or to refuse or forbid tlte said scavenger to enter his, her or their premises for the pur pose of cleaning same. That It shall Ik* the duty of the scavenger to make out and render to the Town Council on the first Friday night of each month a full report of all collections and all persons, firms or corporations who have refused or failed to pay for cleaning out Ids, her or their privies. The scavenger shall charge each person, firm or corporation ten cents for each time lie cleans out his. her or their privy. Sec. 4. If any person, firm or corporation shall fail or refuse to clean out Ills, her or their privy or privies at least once every two weeksduring the months of May. June. July, August and SeptemlsT and once every four weeksduring the months of October, Novern iter, December, January, February. March and April.
