Mr. G. W. Byars, we are sorry to i learn, is confined to his bed on Lime stone street. The Misses Littlejohn gave a nine o’clock tea at their residence on Lime stone street Monday night to quite a large number of friends. The children of IsreaPare well rep resented in the race for office in Cherokee county. We have among the candinates a Moses, a Nathan, a Daniel, an Abraham and a Jacob. The Ledger force is greatly in debted to our genial friend Bans Hawkins for a mammoth watermelon. It weighed 081bsand took eight white men and three niggers to make way with it. This is by actual count. Everybody go to the picnic at Cherokee pane tomorrow evening and take a well filled basket, for there will be a cool time at the young park that night and you will certainly “enjoy yourself.” Train leaves at 2 p. m. Mr. Samuel Beid, of Philadelphia, is in the city. Mr. Reid will make Gaffney his future home. Ho has been engaged as bookkeeper for the Gaffney Carpet Manufacturing Co. Mr. Bierck has brought with him a number of delightful gentlemen but nine surpass Mr. Reid in geniality and genteelness. We welcome him to Gaffney. The Laidies Aid Society of the M. E. Church gave an ice cream festival in the Lipscomb Hotel build ing last Saturday afternoon. They had a lot of nice things for sale and the supper was a big success in every way. They very kindly remembered Thk Ledger by sending some very delicious cream and cake, which we assure them was highly appreciated. They will continue to give these sup pers every Saturday during the re mainder of the season. People You Know and People You Don’t Know. Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Price left Tues day for a trip to Sumter and Darling ton to visit relatives. They will be gone about two weeks. Misses Fannie and Mittie Hopper returned Monday from Grover, N\ C., where they have been visiting friends. Cupt. S. S. Ross and family, who have been spending several weeks “down on the farm” have returned home again. Mr. Geo. Westmoreland, a promi nent lawyer of Atlanta, spent u few hours in the city on Saturday visiting his niece, Mrs. Henry K. Osborne. Prof. H. P. Griffith returned to the city Tuesday after an extended trip in the lower part of Cherokee, Spar tanburg, Laurens and other coun ties. Mrs. W. W. Galloway leaves today on the vestibule for Milledgeville. Ga.. where she goes to join her hus band who has secured a position in that place. The best wishes of The Ledger attend them in their new home. Mr. E. B. Williams, a prominent and popular young man of Meridian, Miss., is in the city visiting his aunt, Mrs. O. E. Wilkins, on Petty street. W. H. Barnes, a popular young man of Greenville, spent last Sat urday and Sunday with his sister, Mrs. C. T. Price, on Victoria avenue. Miss Gaston, a charming young lady of Greenville, is in the city vis iting Mrs, E. J. Barnett on Freder ick street. L. R. Hagood left Tuesday for Gas tonia. N. C., where he goes to accept a position as book-keeper in the First National Bank of that city. Louis has many friends here who will be sorry to see him leave. The Ledger wishes him much success in his new position. Mr. Jno. L. Glover and daughter. Miss Lela, of Spartanburg, visited Mr. A. N. Ellis, of this city several days the past week. Mr. Glover re turned Sunday. Miss Lela will prob ably remain a week or so. Mrs. Will Gaffney and daughter Wilma, who have been visiting rela tives near Mercer for the last four weeks, returned home Monday after noon. They were accompanied by Miss Mattie Macomson who will spend a few days with them. Mr. E. P. Macomson, a prominent planter of Mercer, spent several hours in the city rnonday. Mr. James Ruppe, one of the oldest and most progressive planters of the Maud section, was in the city Saturday on business Miss Bessie Barnes returned to the city last week after a visit to Mrs. Orr in Greenville. Sho was ac companied by Mrs. S. J. Barnes, Mrs. C. T. Prices’ mother. Mr. Mann Sanders, who has for some time been working at Pickens, was in the city Saturday. Miss Inez Sarratt, together with her brother and little sisters, have re turned from Skull Shoals, where they have been spending a few weeks with relatives. Mr. Herbert Humes, a popular young man of Joncsville. spent sev eral days in the city this week. J. L. Moorehead, a prominent far mer of Gowdeysville, spent Tuesday in the city. While here Mr. More- head showed us a cotton root that measured two feet and seven inches. Rev. J. A. Bell, of Glendale, was in the city Saturday. He had his paper changed to Gainesville, Gu., where lie will reside in the future. Mr. Boll resided in this neighborhood for some time, preaching at Abingdon creek. Limestone and other churches. He is a learned preacher and iluent speaker and wo predict for him suc cess in his new field. Mr. Jno. P. White, of Yorkville, spent several days in the city lust week. Mr. W. H. Gooding, wife and daughter, left lor Charlotte, N. C., last Monday on an extended visit to relatives and friends. Miss Lillian Hopper, who has been visiting friends in Blacksburg, re turned to the city last Friday. Mr. W. H. Smith, went to the \V hite Sulphur Springs at Waynes- ville, N. C., last Tuesday, where he goes for his health. We hope he will come back much improved. Misses Ida Wood and Bessie Dra per, who have been at Harris Lithia and Glenns Springs, for some weeks, returned to the city last Friday. Prof. S. A. Chambers, has rented Mr. Jno. P. White’s pretty little cot tage on Frederick street and will soon move in. Mrs. J. A. Carroll and daughter, Miss Minnie, went to Glenn Springs Just Saturday for a short stay. Lucian Hopper and Billie Johnson, made a Hying visit to Spartanburg last Sunday—at least that was where they started. Mr. A. N. Wood, who has been so journing at Harris Lithia Springs and other points, returned home Saturday. Sergeant Howard A. Littlejohn, South Carolina Heavy Battery, came up from Charleston last Wednesday and spent several days in the city. He says all the Gaffney boys in the battery are getting on nicely and en joy being soldiers very much. J. J. Msgness and son. of Spartan burg, were *n the city one day last week on business. Miss Mamie Poole, who has been visiting relatives in the city, for the past week, left yesterday for her home in Charlotte. Mr. G. W. Sold by Cherokee Drug Co. THE COUNTY CAMPAIGN. Good Times at Owen's ForJ, Mabry’s Mil! and Timber Ridge. The county campaign opened one week ago today at Owen’s Ford. There was a good sized crowd present Chairman J cileries conducted the meeting in goo.1 stylo. Barring a little disturbance between some Union county men who hud taken on a little too much “Fuss X” the meeting was an ideal one. On Saturday the meeting was held at Mabry’s Mill and on Tuesday at Timber Ridge. At these two meet ings Mr. Thaekston presided in the place of Chairman Tate, and he made a very acceptable chairman. Good order was maintained at Mabry’s Mill, excepting the fact that two darkeys got very loud-mouthed and attracted the attention of the crowd for a few minutes in a futile effort to figgt. The meeting at Timber Ridge was in every respect an ideal one. No rowdyism of any kind to mar the pleasure of the day. All the candidates talk pretty well and are doing themselves and the county justice. So far the utmost good feeling prevails and the speeches have been on a high plane, no per sonalities being engaged in. This is proper. Church Notices. A special service will beheld at the First Baptist Church in the interest of the Sunday school next Sabbath morning. Parents and children are most cordially invited to be present. At night a thanksgiving service will be held in view of the fact that peace has been restored between the na tions. Rev. W. P. Witsell, will occupy the pulpit of the Episcopal church next Sunday evening at the umal hour. Everybody is invited to attend. A meeting will be inaugurated at Beulah church next Monday night. Pastor Creech will be assisted by the Rev. J. N. Isom. In the absence of the pastor, Rev. J. A. Bell, his pulpit at Limestone will be filled next Sunday by \V. T. Thompson. The Graded School. The Gaffney Graded School will commence its session next Monday week, August 29th. The school trustees have secured the Gaffney Male and Female Seminary building for the school. They will make some repairs in the building and lit it for the purpose. Mr. W. S. Hail will be the superintendent. Ilis assistants will ho Rev. F. C. Hickson. Misses Car rie Sams and Mary Lynn and Mrs. Edna Harris. Misses Inez Sarratt and Lolia Mor gan will have charge of School No. 2 at the Second Baptist Church. Rev. R. C. McCraw, our enterpris ing townsman, ts now completing his arrangements for the erection of a round bale cotton gin in this city The machinery is all contracted for and by September 15th the new gin will be in operation and ready for business. This will be the only round bale ginnery in the upper part of the State and will mean a gredl deal to Cherokee farmers, as we un derstand that cotton packed in this manner brings a much better price on the market than our old fashioned flat bales.
