Berry Hardin, a progressive colored fanner a few miles from this city lias cotton with as many us five blooms to the stalk. Berry is a hust ler and the colored farmers of our county should try to emulate his ex ample. The Ledger acknowledges receipt of the centepede promised by Rev. J. M. McOraw, of Ractolus, Ark. A Southern soldier of the Confed eracy. now living in Iowa, tays an exchange, expressed the sentiment of the South very plainly and tersely the other day when be said: “We couldn’t lick the Yankees in ISlil— and d—d if we’ll let any one else lick ’em now.” Rev. C. E. Robertson, of the Presby terian Church, left Tuesday for Spartanburg, where he goes to con duct a meeting. He will be absent until next Wednesday. There will be no prayer meeting at the Presby terian church tonight, nor no services next Sabbath. The tent meeting will continue until Sunday night, when it closes. During the remainder of this week Rev. S. T. Creech will conduct the services. On Sunday night R v. T. M. Mr. Littlejohn left Charlotte at 0 u. m. and arrived in Gaffney at 5 p. in., stopping three hours at Kings Moun tain. That is pretty good riding fur this hot weather. W e are in receipt of an invitation to attend the annual bamiuet to the South Carolina Slat** Dental Associa tion at Harris Springs Hotel, Thurs day evening July 14th. The dentists will have a line time. No man in the State is capable of giving them a bet ter entertainment than Mr. Harris. A party of young men and fair ( damsels of Wilkinsville, Mercer and Lawn, gave u delightful moonlight picnic at Draytonvslle mountain lust Monday night. They enjoyed them selves hugely and we suppose the mercury registered a very high degree on the ancient peaks of the grand o!d Gilkies that night. Messrs. Creighton it Martin’s tubular well boring machinery lias been the attraction of the “Sons of Rest” society of Gaffney for the past week or so. Mayor Nathan Little john is president and the example he sets before the members is worthy of emulation for people who desire membership in such un organization. What delinquent subscriber could •tie so heartless as to resist an appeal like this from the Lexington, (S. C..) Dispatch? “B*ackberries are now ripe and if our delinquents will only send the almighty dollar so that we can get the sugar and shortening for pies we will be in the swim, and then we can bid farewell to the hunger and thirst and feast on blackberry pies. Let the dollars roll in.” Floyd L. Baler and Anthony Sur ratt returned to the city Tuesday after visiting Blacksburg, Yorkville, Chester, Union, Jonesville and Spartanburg. They made the entire trip on their wheels and came back in pretty fair order, though the girls say “they are not as pretty as they were when they started.” There must be some great attractions for these gay gents that would cause them to take such a chase in such weather. We again call to the attention of the candidates the fact that the county executive committee will require that they file their pledges and pay their assessment by Satur day. Unless this is complied with they cannot run in the approaching primary election. It has been sup posed by some that the executive committee would extend the time, but they will not. Mrs. D Milton Reaves and daugh ter, of Moultrie, Gu., arrived in the city today and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kendrick on Limestone street. Miss Willie Hill, a charming young lady of Charlotte, is in the city the guest of Miss Eflio Hopper at the Limestone Inn. Miss Willie has a host of friends here who arc always delighted to see her. Miss Kate Sumner, of Asheville and Miss Annie Lou Wingo, nfCampo- bella are in the city, the guests of Miss Nannie Cora Richardson at Limestone. A. C. Izard, traveling soliciting agent of the Southern Railway, spent Monday in the city. Reynolds, of Rav nna, sent us a cotton bloom which w ,s plucked from his field on Thurs* uy, June 23^1. Mr. Reynolds was a little be hind in reporting, but he is ahead of many of his neighbors. J. S. Spencer brought in a cotton bloom Tuesday. Mr. Specer is one of Cherokee’s hardworking and indust rious farmers, hut he was a little late on cotton blooms this year. J. A. Harris, of Algood, was among the hustling Cherokee farmers to bring us a cotton bloom Tuesday. O. P. Hill brought in a cotton bloom on the 2$th which was plucked on the 27th. We are in receipt of votton blooms from our friend, W. C. Kirby, of the Ella Jane section. E. J. M. Durham, of State Line, sent us a cotton bloom last week which opened on Monday June 20th. Dr. Edward 8. Joyi is of the .South Carolina College was present Inst Friday and gave some interesting talks on English. Superintendent Hughes of the Greenville Graded School will be here m xt Monday. Everybody who knows Mr. Hughes expects to enjoy his visit. He will probably remain u week. The State Superintendent of Educa tion has promise to have President Woodwood of toe South Carolina College to lecture before the close ol the school. Prof Sams has charge of the de partment of Mathematics, and is giving a thorough drilling in Algebra and Arithmetic Prof. McArlhur teaches English Grammer in a thor oughly practical way. Prof. Hall is instructor of Physiology and Hygiene. His text work is supplemented by practical illustrations, and the use of the microscope. Dr. C. A. Jefferies on last Thurs day gave an interesting lecture on the skull. He hud with him a human skuii and brain. The teachers seem to be enthusi astic in their work, and, judging by the close attention given their stud ies, they will be greatly benefitted liy their course of study. The school continues two weeks longer, after the close of this week, which will give every <‘urnest teacher an opportunity to increase his efficiency. R Gwaltney. D. D , of PLigefield. Dr. Gwaltney is one of the best preachers that has ever been in Gaffney. His expounding of Hie scriptural truths is simple yet full. He does not adopt the exciting policy of the majority of evangelists. In fact he is not an evangelist in the sense in which that class of preachers are commonly spoken of, but he is an evangelist in the truest se..se of the word.
