C., were commenced this week. The Pelham, S. C., Cotton Mills, it is reported, will put in an ice factory. They have finished putting in a f>UO )». p. Cooper-Corless engine. J. R. Barron, president and treas urer and W. W. Moore, superintend ent Manchester Cotton Mills, Rock Hill. 8. C., were in Charlotte last, week. 1). L. Ledwell, boss carder at Wadesboro, X'. C.. Cotton Mills, resigned last week to become night superintendent with the 0. A. Rob bins Co., Charlotte. \V. E. Poag has resigned as boss Harder and spinner for the Cabarrus Cotton Mills, Concord. X". C., to take a similar position with the Victoria Cotton Mills. Rock Hill, 8. 0. It is announced at Columbia, S. €., that a cotton mill with #<"i0,000 capita! to be located at Ciemson Col lege. 8. C.. was commissioned by the Secretary of 8tate on June 21. B. F. 8. Austin, weaving overseer »t Gastonia Mills, Gastonia, X\ C., is now overseer of weaving at Fair- field Mills, Winnsboro, 8. C. Jell Cole has returned to tins factory as loom fixer. The colored folks at Concord, X". €.. who are building the Coleman Cotton Mill, held another meeting this week. They are still figuring on how they will purchase their engine »nd boiler. John Carter, a young white man, operative in the Laurens, 8. C., Cot ton Mills, was run over by a freight train of the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens railroad on Juno 15 and in- »tantly killed. His body was horri bly mangled. Ho was unmarried. Another fire occured last week in the picker room of the Delma Cotton Mills, Lincolnton, N. C., but was ex tinguished before much damage was done. For a few' days the Delma had been using a lot of cotton sam ples and it seems that the lot was pretty well filled with matches. Frank O. Walton went to Ft. Mil), 6. €., this week to take the position of secretary and treasurer of the Mill- fort Cotton Mills. Mr. Walton was manager of the Bellemout Cotton Mill, Graham, N. C , up to three or four months ago, since which time he has been residing at Morganton, «. O. No. 1 Mill, at Pacolet, 8. C., stop ped suddenly one day last week, caused by the drowning of the son of Win. Hodge in the pond at No. 3. Little Wilton was in bathing, and it w supposed the under-cutrent car ried him beyond his depth. No, 3 pond was drawn off and the body re covered. The Southern Cotton Mills, Besse mer City, N. C., are getting prices on dyeing machinery and dyehouse equipment with the view to changing their production over from 08x72 white goods to colored designs. Capt. J. M. Odell, president of the mill, has been North making investi gations. The class of WOO of the Lowell Mass. Textile School has elected for its Secretary and Treasurer John Worth McAlister of Asheboro, N. C., while John William Spain of (Quit man, Ga., heads the members of the •ojnmttee. Mr. McAlister is also Pres ident of the school’s athletic asso ciation and Spain a committeeman of same. Joseph Murdock, the late presi dent of the American. Card Clothing Go., who died recently at his home in Leicester, Mass., it is said first started in business by merchandising at Macon Ga., when he was 18 years of age. This he conducted until 1847 when he and his brother Joshua started a card clothing factory. He leftonlyone child, Julius O. Mur- dock. No Epidemic. Lockhart, June 27.—I regard The Ledger among tho most newsy sheets that comes to our office. There is a family living on the place that has something unique in the way of stone ware. It has been in the family for time out of mind, having dec-ended from father to son for several generations, in shape it is a hollow circle with a mouth piece like u jug attached thereto and about eight inches in diameter and will hold a pint. It is said to have been used to carry bee bait in by some of the old settlers of North Carolina. No doubt (without making any nll.ction on anyone) that it has also carried a good deal of “bug juice 7 ’ in its in terior as it can be bung so nicely on the arm or on a saddle horn. Mrs. W. T. Garner, wife of our as sistant weaver, is visiting friends at Cowpens. Small chickens arc beginning to make their appearance on the market and small fledgelings are selling for 12.1 cents each. There is a good opening here for a travelling dentist. One who will come among us at appointed tinrus and do our work. Cherokee Drug Co. only. Ravenna Rjplings. (Correspondence of Tho Ledger.) Ravk.nxa, June 28—Last Friday af ter noon Mr T. O. Green curried a lot of peaches to Pacolet Mills and while he was delivering some to a party, left u little girl holding his horse, the horse, in some way, got loose and made up the street in a fast trot. A slight wind blew the um brella from the buggy and this caused the horse to go in full speed and ran for about two miles before it was taken up. It ran into the buggy of a colored man and both buggies were upset, Mr. Green’s buggy being con siderably smashed up, and the occu pants of the other buggy were thrown out and their horse broke out of har ness and ran out into a corn field. Mr. Earle Fowler died yesterday morning at 7 o’clock and will be buried at Goucherthis afternoon. i^uitc a large crowd was present last Wednesday at the reunion of Mrs. Dorcas Littlejohn and all report quite a pleasant time. Mrs. H. A. Stack, of Cowpens, re turned homo last Sunday after a few days visit to her parents here, Mr. and Mrs. Felix Littlejohn. Some of the farmers here are dis appointed; not getting their wheat threshed on account of Mr. W. Sam Lipscombs thresher breaking down. A portion of it had to be sent to Col umbia. There was quite a storm here Sun day afternoon. A. B. C. Courage In War. Lieutenant Scott, who was in tho en gagement at Cardenas iu which young Bagley was killed, says courage in war consists largely of keeping busy. “Once a man becomes busy with tho guns ho thinks only of shooting, not of getting shot, and his knees aro stiff with tho desire to do injury./’ Tho lieutenant, however, admits of thinking of his own safety at ono time during the fight, when ho saw a shell burst and “make buttonholes in everything its fragments struck. ”—Savannah News. Well might Lord Chatham proclaim from his place iu tho parliament of Great Britain, “History, my lords, has been my favorite study, and in the cele brated writings of antiquity I have of ten admired the patriotism of Greece and Rome, but I must declare aud avow that in the master states of the world I do not know the people, nor tbo senate, who in such a complication of difficult circumstances can stand in preference fb tbo delegates of America assembled in general congress at Philadelphia.” — - The Catawba Spinning Mills, Ches ter, 8. C., have passed under the con trol of a new company consisting of Chas. J. Webb, the Philadelphia com missioner merchant, Leroy Springs, president of the LancasterS. C.. Cot ton Mills, and some other South Car olina stockholders. Our understand ing is that Col. Springs will direct its management, with Chas. B. Skipper as directing Superintendent is addi tion to his duties as superintendent of the Lancaster mills. The Roanoke Mills Co., Roanoke Rapids, N. C., will soon have the dyehouse, which is in course of con struction, completed. The machin ery for the same has arrived, and consists of 1 drying, 8 dyeing and 2 sizing machines, made by the H. W. Butterwoth <fc Sons Co., Fhila., Pa. The production of the mill has been confined to white goods, but with the additiou of the dyehouse a variety of goods will be made. Some samples of cloth of heavy quality were gotten out for the Government, and no doubt but what these mills will he favored with a good order. Preparations are being made to run the spinning aifl| carding rooms on double time. This intention will be carried out as soon us a night force can be collected. ludept-ndence Day.
