Bell wants a full turnout, as he wants the boys to make a creditable showing on that day. Attention is called to tlie announce ment of the Winthrop Normal and Training School, of ilock Hill, in another column. This institution, under the able direction of Prof. I). B. Johnson, has attained a reputa tion for usefulness of which any col lege might be proud. Tbe Company Store at Cowpens was struck by lightning lust week. As a consequence J. C. Wallace was awarded a contract to place lightning rods on the building. Mr. Wallace also has the contract to place rods on the residence of the president of the factory and the Mountain View school building. There will be a big basket pic nic at the new iron bridge across Broad river at Durham Shoals,Saturday June 2nd. The bridge will be completed by that time and North and South Carolina will join in to make the oc casion a grand success. The date has boon changed so as not to conflict with the Gaffney and Shelby celebra tions. Those who anticipate running for office in this county in the approach ing election had better make up their minds in regard to the matter at once, as by the action of the county demo cratic executive commute they will not be allowed to run in the primary unless they file their pledges on or before Saturdaj, July 2nd—that is one week from next Saturday. —• «••»- • - It kills but never cures. Lunham, member of congress from Texas, and a brother- in-law of our fellow townsman, Moses Wood, passed through the city Sun day on his way to Nesbit. where he goes to visit his aged mother who is very sick. Dr. C. T. Lipscomb went to Jones- ville Monday on professional busi ness. A. It. X. Folger, left last Tuesday for the mountains for a brief rest. Senator Win. Jefferies, was in the city Tuesday. Miss Dora Whitlock, of Joresville, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. James Brown. Hugh Long, a one time resident of this city, spent Tuesday in town. Miss May Harris, returned from Spartanburg Tuesday where she bus been on a two weeks visit to friends. Miss Annie Harratt, who has been absent from the city for several weeks on a visit to friends in the lower part of the state, returned to the city Friday. She was accompanied by Miss Kate Magness. of Spurtunburg- Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Kenneth Baker, a prominent cot ton buyer of Greenwood, is in the city on a visit to his parents Mr. and Mrs. L. Baker on Grenurd street. Kennie is a Gaffney boy of whom Gaffney is proud. J. W. Allen, a hustling confection er of Spartanburg, was in tbe city Tuesday on business. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Ross of Shelby, were in the city several days tills week. Messrs. Herbert Chambers, E. C. It was further agreed to allow the prohibition party to place a box at each of the voting precincts and to have ballots on which shall be printed high license dispensary, prohibition or local option and that tbe votes so cast to be tabulated by the managers at said precincts. — « -«•— . — Tbe Teachers’ Institute, The Teachers’ Institute opened at the Gaffney Male and Female Sem inary Monday with a good attend ance. Nearly forty teachers of this and adjoining counties are availing themselves of the opportunity thus presented to them to better equip themselves for the work in which they are engaged. The work so far has been of the most satisfactory order. Dr. E. S. Joynes.of the South Carolina College, will arrive in the city Monday and lecture before the institute Monday and Tuesday nights.
