The theory, and indeed the general prac tice, is that tho captain checks tho boxes as they are stored in tho bullion room, locks tho door when the transaction is complete, and, sleeping or waking, car ries tho key in a leather pouch around his neck till ho unlocks the door at tho end cf the voyage. In tho Tararua case, at Mel bourne, in 1880, when $10,000 worth cf gold bars were stolen, tho police dis covered that two keys, c ither cf which opened tho bullion ro«,m, used to hang against tho wall in the public bur. It was also discovered that one of theso keys mysteriously disappeared 12 months before the robbery and that no serious investigation was then made iato tho loss, nor was any alteration made in the lock of the bullion room. This Tararua was running between Now Zealand and Australia and had {hipped boxes of gold at various ports. Altogether she was supposed to carry 11 boxes.- On arriving at Melbourne it was found that ono of theso boxes was missing. Examination showed that somo ouo had simply opened the door with a key, extracted tho box and locked tho door again. The robbery from tho Iberia, which left Melbourne for London in March, IS Si), is supposed to have been also ef fected by means of a key surreptitiously procured. In that case tho robbery was not discovered till tho arrival of the vessel iu Loudon. The robbery from the China develop ed in a remarkable way. Hero tho Ori ental bank in Sydney placed the gold on hoard a coast steamer called the Avoca. At Melbourne the gold was transship ped to tho China. Tho China touched at Adelaide and other ports, but it was only at Galle the discovery of the rob bery was made. Detectives operated on all the ports simultaneously, but no where could a clew be found. The amount missing was the usual $20,000. In 18(8 a man named Weiberg, who had been a carpenter on the China, took up a selection in the interior of Victo ria. Before settling down he married a Melbourne barmaid and appears to have confided to her some shady particulars of his past history. Tho Samson ami Delilah story was in part repeated, and the public laid themselves out to watch Weiberg^ The upshot was tho arrest of the man as the safe rifler of the China. One thousand sovereigns were found in a tin of fat stored away by him in Melbourne. In his hut was discovered a wooden piano stulfod with gold. The wood was hollowed out and the gold dropped in. In tho hut was also discov ered a bar of soap containing 200 sover eigns. Ho told the detectives that ho had 1,800 sovereigns concealed on his selec tion and offered if they accompanied him to point out where the booty lay. As may he surmised, he fooled tho po lice into a wild, thick timbered region, took them suddenly off guard and made his escape. Ho was recaptured, howev er, some months later. The mystery of the Iberia was cleared up in a still more singular manner. Ono day two hoys playing at Williamstowu saw a mouse run into a hole under the platform of the railway pier. One of the boys started to dig tbe mouse out with a stick and to his surprise un earthed a ma s of sovereigns. The po lice were informed, and before the day whs out a, 742 sovereigns were recovered. Tho recovery of the Arodale gold was more satisfactory as far us amount is concerned. For nearly two years the police labored in vain. Tbe mystery might never have been cleared up but fur an accident. A wharf lumper fish ing at Nelson pier, where tho Aredale bad been berthed, hooked on to some thing which excited his curiosity. Ob taining assistance, tbe lumper snooeed- ed iu bringing to tbe surface tbe miss ing box, with its treasure intact. The robber had evidently sank tbe box, in tending to return for it when opportu nity offered.—Chambers’ Journal. Orrr<-motlonn1 Humanity. If you inflict ono healing pang, exert ono touch of salutary discipline, then you aro no benefactor, but a heartless devil. Tho outcry against vaccination, against vivisection, furnishes hu exactly parallel case. The same sentiment is at the heart of hot!)—the unconquerable shrinking from initial pain, even though it promise to repay itself by tenfold ex emption in tho future. Of course the agitators against vaccination and vivi section assure themselves that them are uo repaying benefits to follow, and in a way they aro sincere. But their sincer ity is not that which comes from a cool headed review of known facts. It is tho sincerity of an emotion which lias over whelmed reason. An unbiased deduction from the ex perience of small epidemics, from the records of medical progress, must con vince tho most unwilling of us that the benefits of both vaccination and viviseo- tion aro real and appreciable. Whether they outweigh tho death of a few weak ly infants ami tho suffering of a few in sensitive animals is another question. Most people would readily answer it with a “Yes.” Tho antivaccinators and antivivisectors might on consideration answer it with a“No. ” But tho in structive feature of their case is that they do not consider at all. They never get so far. The sight of the scabs on a baby’s arm, tho idea of th«> yelping of a tortured dog, the first hint or imagin ing of physical pain, is enough to par alyze their reason.—Blackwood’s Mag azine. He has occasionally been going home with one of our pretty girls nod after Sunday school, as was his custom, walked up and asked to accompany her home. She was standing chat ting with some other girls when one of them with a merry twinkle pre tended to think he had proposed going with her quickly said yes. Ben Green and another colored man who works forCline Bros, hud a wagon at Richardson’s shop. The horses became frightened and started to run. Ben was on the ground and attempted to check the team. In making the attempt he was trampled^on and run over. Tho in juries he received rendered him uncon scious for a time. University and the Greenville Female CoBegc were exceedingly pleasant occasions from tho baccalaureate ser mons on Sunday to the final exercises when five young from the Female College. This institution has passed through its most successful session under President Riley, 20<i having been enrolled this year. The annual concert under Prof. G. Ferrata was a splendid exhibition of tho highest order of music, and the anniversary of the Judson Literary Society was a most interesting enterlainment, Furman University graduated four teen young men and one young lady. Miss McGee, of Greenville. The closing exercises Wednesday night were presided over by President Montague, whose energy,tact.wisdom and ability are doing so much for Furman. Thr Furman alumni have raised $8,900 for the new alumni hall. Th. y will easily secure $2,000 ad li- wiil give sional when Prof. Judson $5,000, and the work of building will begin immediately. Rev. H. R. Moseley was re-elected president of the association. Furman seems to have entered upon a new era of pros perity and s;uccess. — -*»•- - Eczema 2 The Only Cure.
