Jefferies is one of the most progressive gardeners in this section. He had roasting ears from his garden Saturday. The Gnllney baseball team leaves this afternoon for Kings Mountain, where they go to cross bats with the Kings Mountain team. May victory crown their ellorts. Luke Corry, the polite and hustling porter at Lipscomb’s Hotel, has made some improvements around bis pretty little cottage. Luke is one of the most progressive colored men in Gulf- ney. The county school board last Thurs day ordered that a new school district for Limestone township be set off. Surveyor Hams and his corps of assis tants have since been busy laying otf the new school district. For twenty days, commencing June 20lh Superintendent of Educa tion McArthur, assisted by a number of eminent educators, will conduct a summer school for teachers for Cher okee county at the Gaffney Male and Female Seminary. Tne only ex pense that those who attend will bo put to will be that of board while in tho city. An envelope containing duplicate subscription papers to the stock of the Gaffney Carpet Manufacturing Co., was lost a couple of weeks ago on the street. If the party finding them will return them to this office he or she may receive something of more value to them than the papers, which are of no earthly value to any one except the carpet mill. Lem Blanton, one of the best farm ers in Cherokee county, comes to the front on the wheat question. Since the middle of November he planted two and a half bushels of wheat on six acres of land, using sixty bushels of cotton seed and four sacks of acid. The land was ordinary cotton land. He simply run out the cotton stalks, harrowed the'Hand, scattered the fertilizer and sowed the wheat, doing the ploughing with small ploughs, and the result ' was seventy-six bushels of clean wheat. — —« ■*•*- - — It kills but never cures. Ravenna, June 11—A number of people from this section went to a big birthday celebration near Jones- ville last Thursday. It was in the honor of the ninety-eighth birthday of Mrs. Sallie Kirby. All report a nice time. Misses Minnie and Eunice Little john, of Danville, Va., are visiting friends and relatives in this commu nity. Fincher Foster, a colored man driving (yi Mr. J. B. Brown’s place, cut, one day last week, seventy- live schock of wheat from half past one o’clock till night. All day lie cut 12N dozen. Mr. Brown has made about 500 shocks this year. Aunt Rachel Norris, colored, whom I reported sick in my last communi cation, was buried at Griffin Hill Methodist church last Wednesday in presence of a large crowd of colored persons. She had been very low for several weeks and her death was not unexpected. She was considered by both white and colored '‘a good old woman.” Miss Laura Pettit left last Satur day to attend the Commercial school at Spartanburg. She will be greatly missed by her many friends here. Blanche Littlejohn has something the matter with her throat. She thinks probably it is a cherry seed in her wind pipe. I hear that Miss Ida Green is sick. a. B. c. A New Law Firm. Mr. Henry K. Osborne, of Green ville, has formed a co-partnership with Col. T. B. Stuard, of Lawn, was among the hustling Cherokee planters in the city yesterday. T. W. Kirby and wife, of Curoleen, N. C., who have been visiting Mr. Kirby’s father in tliis section for sev eral days the past week, returned home Tuesday morning. G. T. Greer, formerly of this city but who lias recently been living at Greers, has moved to Pelham. He was in the city yesterday shaking hands with his friends here. Miss Jane Nott visited friends and relatives in the city tnis week. Col. T. Stoho Furrow spent several days the past week in Spartanburg on professional business. Misses Beona and Ida Wood, of this city, are visiting relatives and friends in Spartanburg. J. C. Jefferies, Esb., spent Monday in the Mountain City on professional business. Mr. Jefferies is one of the brightest^ lawyers of the Cherokee bar and U capital all round good fel low who is rapidly making friends all over the country by his fair deal ings and genial disposition W. A. Jackins, of Blacksburg, was in the city yesterday on business. J. W. Jenkins, who has been work ing for the Gaffney Manufacturing Company, leaves today for Spartan burg, he having accepted a position with the Arkwright Mills. Mr. O. A. Osborne, a prominent citizen of Blacksburg, was in the city Tuesday. Miss Annie Sutton, of Glendale, visited relatives in the city this week, Miss M. E. Montgomery, of Mercer, is in the city visiting relatives. Miss Kate Folger left Tuesday for Easley, where she goes to visit rela tives. Hyder Farrow, after several months stay in Augusta, Ga., returned to the city last Monday. Miss Maude Drummond, a charm ing young lady who has been attend ing Cooper Limestone Institute, after spending a week with friends in the city, left Monday on the vestibule for her home at Lanford. Miss Drum mond was very popular at Limestone and also has many friends in the city who will look forward to her return with pleasure. Tom Brown left the city Monday for parts unknown to him but we hear he had a guide and therefore do not feel uneasy about him, Lewis Wood, who has been attend ing Wofford College, returned to the city last Sat unlay. Anthony Surratt, returned last week from Clemson College, where he has been for the past five months at school. Mrs. J. F. C., Cotton Mills have donated a suitable lot and ijidOO in cash for the erection of a $1000 Methodist church in Factory viile. W. E. Holt has resigned as book keeper at Henrietta, N. C.. Mill No. 2. and returned to his home at Bur lington. X. C. He is succeeded by Titeo. Reynolds of Charlotte. W. R. Chapman, of Charlotte, N. C., has gotten the contract for renew ing the electric light plant, and also putting in new switch board for Avon Cotton Mills Gastonia, N. C. Carpenters are finishing up plac ing the new flooring in the Millfort Mill, Ft. Mill, S. C„ and the new Kitson. Whifcin and Woodsocket ma chinery will shortly be placed there on. Hattie Brown, tv young lady em ployed in the Wilmington, N. C..Cot ton Mills, got her right hand badly mashed in the machinery on June 3. The middle finger had to he ampu tated. Harry H. Seawoll. of Atlanta, Ga., who has been learning the mill busi ness at Gloucester, X. J., has en gaged with the Ashby Cotton Mills, Marion, S. C., as night boss carder and spinner. The Abbeville S. C., Cotton Mill has recently received two big orders for goods to be shipped to Shanghai, Chi a. More than a train load will be sent forward as soon as the cars can be loaded. W. E. Walker, of the Bamberg S. C.. Cotton Mills, and wife lost their little daughter Vera, who 'died June 3. She was horn Sept. 1, 18%, and is much mourned by her affection ate father and mother. A. S. White has given up his posi tion as second hand in spinning with tlie Cannon Mfg. Co., Concord, N. C., to become overseer of carding an l spinning with the Patterson Mfg. Co China Grove, N. C, The marriage is chronicled of M. E. McGuinn, boss weaver of Clifton, S. C., Mill No. 1. It occured last Sunday afternoon at Forest City, N. C., when Mrs. Sammie Tirsely join ed her fortunes with his. A notable act was that of Capt. Win. A. Courtenay, president of Courtenay Mfg. Co., Newry, S. C., who recently arranged to give an annual medal to the most proficient student in the class of Commercial Law of the Charlotte Commercial College. Supt. J. M. Williams, of the Hil ling and Enterprise Mills, Kings Mtn., N. C., lias repainted Itis resi dence near the old mill and has thus greatly improved his property and its appearances. Capt. F. Hilling, Sec. and Treas. of the Hilling Mills, Itas also repainted his residence. S. H. Howard, Supt. of the Hard en, N. C., Cotton Mills, drove over to Charlotte Thursday, a distance of 30 miles. Friday morning while driv ing away from tiie Ada Mills, his imile became frightened at a train and ran off. Mr. Howard saved him self by jumping, while the mule saved himself by stopping and turn ing around, looked innocently at Mr. Howard. The board of directors of the Ashe ville N. C., Board of Trade held a special meeting on May 3 to consider an overture by David Trainer, of Chester, Pa., looking to the establish ment cf a knitting mill at Asheville. A committee composed of Secretary Rawls and John A Nickles was ap pointed to confer with Mr. Trainer and endeavor to secure the locution of the mill. The Humilton-Corliss engine, re cently installed by the Charlotte Ma chine Co., at the Maxton, N. C M Cot ton Mills, is running so nicely that tlie company speak of it in the high est terms of praise. These mills are manufacturing single yarns, and to make tho maiket broader they will add 6 twisters (Collins) and a spooler, so as to enable them to make various kinds of yarns, single, 2 ply, etc. Jas. N. Williamson, of Jus. N. Wil liamson & Sons, proprietors Ossipee Cotton Mills, Klon College, N. C., has with John (,». Gant been author ized to build two stone piers in litedy Fork river, at a site at Ossipee Mills, for a bridge. The work is to be done at $3.00 per cubic yard. When the work is complete the county will execute a bond to Messrs. Williamson & Gant for amount ex pended, without interest, which the county will refund, when it shall be determined in the future to build tho bridge. The Trenton Cotton Mills. Gas tonia. N. C., are to have a new office. G. W. Kagan, the secretary and treasurer is now putting up a brick Mu. building for the purpose next, to War ren’s shop on the Mite of Rice’s res taurant. The office inside and out will he a tiling of beauty. Do you notice how it delights .Mr. Ragan to abolish eyesores. He first moved uwjy the dilapidated old mill on Mill street, then moved on tore down other old buildings to make way for his present beautiful residence and now he causes a putched-up colored restaurant to give place to a sumpt uous business office.
