The large and orderly congre gations that attended Salem last Sat urday and Sunday is a compliment to the Confederate soldier and shows that his memory is still revered. Mrs. John Moss, of Blacksburg, is the possessor of one of the finest milch cows in Cherokee county. In 'three months she sold 12(1 pounds of butter and 40 gallons of milk, the product of one cow. Gossett of this city, killed the monster blnck- snake of Cherokee Saturday evening while fishing near Austell's mill pjnd. It measured four feet and seven inches from tip to tip and four inches in circumference. ClitT Lipscomb is the champion onion raiser of Cherokee county. The Ledger was presented with n specimen of this healty vegetable grown by Mr. Lipscomb which is a credit to that gentlemen and attests the productiveness of his lands. The Ledger acknowledges receipt of invitations to attend the com mencement exercises of tlie Win- throp Xortnal and Industrial College June 5th to 8th, and the recital given by tlie pupils of the primary depart ment of Cooper-Limestone Institute June 3rd at 5:30 p.m. J. C. Wallace, who has been rep- presenting the Franklin Lightning Rod Co., in Xorth Carolina, is now located at Cowpens, from which place be will conduct operations ir this territory. Mr. Wallace is a na tive of York county and is well and favorably known in this section. In tin article last week we said that W. (>. Lipscomb ifc Bro. would open a millinery and dress goods store in their new building on Grenard street, but we have found that we were mis taken, and that it is to be a gents furnishing establishment. In other words the dispensary has moved into this building. Mr. J. H. Turner displayed on the street last week a specimen of vetch grown on his place at Limestone. The plant makes an excellent forage for cattle. It is easily grown and well adapted to this climate. It might be well for some of our pro gressive planters to interview Mr. Turner on the merits of this plant. The late J. G. Spencer was insured in the Mutual Life Insurance Co., of Kentucky. F. G. Mr. Strain has our thanks. The Children’s Day exercises at the Second Methodist Sunday School will take place next Subbath morn ing at 10 o’clock. Superintendent Holmes has arranged a most attrac tive program and the little folks have diligently studied their parts and ate well trained. The affair will no doubt reflect credit upon both the scholars and the teachers and'super intendent. Miss Ifessie Dent, a charming young lady of Columbia, is in tlie city, the guest of her brother, Rev. T. M. Dent. Miss Dent made many friends while here last summer who are glad to see her again. Squire Alexander was in tlie city Monday. Mr. A. X. Wood returned Saturday afternoon from a trip to Xushville, where he went to attend the com mencement exercises of the Nashville College for Young Ladies, from which institution Miss Ida graduated Mi.s year. Mr. Wood was accom panied homo by Miss Lillian, who lias also been attending this college this season. Miss Ida will visit friends and relatives in Alabama before she returns home. M. L. Ross, of Shelby, was in the city yesterday. Albert Bettys, of Cherokee Xo. 1, was in the city this week. N. W. Harden, Esq., of Blacks burg. was among the prominent out of town attorneys who were in attend ance upon court this week. John Moss, of Blacksburg, was in the city Tuesday. Hon. D. E. Finley, of York, bus been in the city this week on pro fessional business. Miss Gen. Beard, a charming young lady of East Augusta, is in tiie city on a visit to Mrs. A. B. Gaines on Victoria Avenue. Miss Beard once lived in this city where she bus many friends who are glad to have her among them again. Mrs. Meek 8mith, of Grover, is visiting her parents in this city. Mrs. W. W. Thomas is visiting rel atives at Clifton. Mr. J. W. Nance of Grindal, while paying The Ledger a visit yesterday, showed a five doller note issued by the 8tatt Bank of South Carolina in 18G0. Gaffney High School closes its years work on Friday night at the opera house. A good quiet year of hard work has been completed and many pupils speak of benefits re ceived. Exercises begin at 8:45p. in., doors open at 7 :45. A cordial invitation is extended to all to be present. Colored Odd Fellows Annual Sermon. The nineteenth annual aermon to Gaffney City Lodge Xo. 2040. G. U. O. O. F. was delivered last Sunday night at Limestone (colored) Baptist Church by Rev. Beatty. Consid erably more business has been dis pensed during the three days of this term, that for the same length of time at any previous term held in Cherok* e county. About one day will he taken up iu the trying of equity causes after the jury is dismissed. Judge Gage, tlie newly elected judge of ihe sixth circuit will preside at tlie September term of court. + —- A Bold Thief. On last Tuesday night a colored individual entered the store of L. W. McGuinn and called for an ice drink, while Mr. Manus, an employee, was busy mixing the drink for him he ran his hand into the showcase near by and took a handsome gold watch which belonged to Mr. Manus. Mr. Manus, however, did not discover that he had been robbed until ten or fifteen minutes after tiie thief bad taken his departure, and consequent ly was to late to overtake him. A colored woman who runs a restaurant next door happened to know the thief and it will omy be a question of time until he will be captured. Cooper-Limestone Commencement. The commencement exercises of Cooper-Limestone Institute will be inuugunted next Sabbath, when the baccalaureate sermon will be rieiiv- erated by Rev. E. E. Botnar, of Aiken, S. C. The meeting at the court house last Thursday night to consider the advisability of requesting the Board of School Commissioners to st*l. oil' a new' school district was not as well attended as it should have been, but tlie audience was a most representa tive one. Superintendent of Educa tion McArthur was made chairman and J. B. Bell secretary. The debate was quite lively and elicited the fact that the meeting was overwhelmingly in favor of requesting the County School Board to setoff the new school district. This request was made. The establishment of a graded school will now await further devel- onement. An Addition to the Mill. Work on a 90x75 two story addition to the mill of the Gaffney Manufac turing Company was commenced last Saturday by Contractor Baker cfc Lu- master. It is proposed to use the new addition for twisters. Tlie com pany made no extended mention of this addition, but, just like the busi ness people that they are, when they decided to build went right to work at it. The closing exercises of the Gaff ney Male and Female Seminary took place in the auditorium of the school building Tuesday night. The pro gramme consisted of the rendition of a cantata entitled “Cinderella in Flowerland.” in which a majority of the scholars of the school appeared. The play was well rendered and •bowed Hint the teachers and stu dents had worked diligently. The audience was large and appreciative and the applause 4V»h frequent.
