We do not assume to be a dictator
or to advise the merchants of CtatTney
how to run their business, but seeing
in our exchanges that the merchants
of uli the other hustling and progres
sive cities and towns in the state
have or are adopting the early closing
plan for the summer season we take
it upon ourselves to suggest to our
merchants that it would not be a bad
idea for them to follow suit. In nine
cases out of ten where concerted ac
tion can be had in this matter it has
proven most satisfactory. It is not
worth. while to attempt to give the
advantages to be derived from a step
in this diieetion. Housekeepers can
and will readily adapt themselves to
the plan and we do not believe that a
single merchant who has the goodness
of heart to let his clerks olT at say
seven or eight o’clock during the
summer will lose a cent by doing so.
On the other hand what he will gain
in gratitude from his employes will
more titan compensate for any little
sale he may lose by closing early.

We Need Help Ourselves.
We received the following com
munication Monday: “Dear Gentle
men of Gaffney: I truly hope you
will be kind to the poor and helpless,
old and broke down creatures like
me* 1 hope you will so >n build a
poor house for the poor and helpless,
as I have no one to look to and am
almost helpless. N. M.C. to Gaffney
Ledger.” We certainly think the
county should make some provision
for its indigent poor and believe they
are doing all they can at the present
time. However, we think it unfair
to call on the citizens of Gaffney for
more than their shuire of this sup
port. and it is altogether out of tin-
question for The Ledger to do any
thing ta relieve the distress of .our
frierjd. T’nless some of our worthy
delinquent friends hurry upand come
to the rescue it will only be a matte*
of time when we will be forced to
appeal to the charity of our fellow
citizens to keep us out of the poor
house ourselves.

The O. P. Houses Knocked Out.
In the supremo court last Tuesday
tlie Simonton injujiction in the Van-
dercook case was reversed, thus the
dispensary has gained the victory
over the 0. P. shops. Senator Till
man wired the governer as follows,
March 9th. “The dispensary is on
top and you can suppress blino tiger-
and original package men without
further molestation by injunction.
Congratulations.”
Gov. ElUbee said Monday that he
would wait to see what the original
package people would do and would
act if they did not.
All parts of the dispensary law were
sustained e ccept the clause per-
tiin.ng to the inspection of the
liquors of individuals.
All the O. P. Houses in Gaffney
closed their doors Tuesday morning
and the proprietors will obey the*Jaw
in every respect.
Cooper-Limestone at the “Ford.”
President Muck, of Cooper-Lime
stone Institute, in the goodness of
his heart let his girls have a day off
duty Friday. All the pupils, teach
ers and many of their fiiends in the
city, went to Cherokee Ford and
spent the day in a most enjoyable
manner. All the fine carriages and
teams of our livery stables and pri
vate individuals were brought into
requisition to convey the party to the
river. Every one carried baskets
heavily laden with the choicest
viands of the Piedmont. When go
ing out and returning the party pre
sented a spectacle of which any
city might well be proud.
The participants report a most
pleasant time and all feel proud of
Cooper-Limestone which alone can
make such occasions possible.
A Treat.
Joe Pridmoro, of Alvin. Texas,
sent Mrs. J. J. Gaffney a crate of
early vegetables lust week. Mrs.
GulTuay, %!io always remembers The
Ledger, kindly aent us a portion of
the gift, which was highly appreciated
and served to augment the menu of
the editor on Sunday at noon. Our
thanks are due Mrs. Gaffney and Mr.
Pridmore.
Doing The Master’s Work.
The protracted meeting now going
on ut the M Jthodist church la becom
ing of more than ordinary interest.
Mr. Price, the laborer, is an earnest
worker and is creating a most favor
able impression. The sermon last
Sabbath morning was favorably com
mented on and the opinion has been
expressed by some that it was one of
the most powerful sermons ever deliv
ered in Gaffney. The congregations
have been only moderate in size, but
the interest manifest great. The
singing of Rev. Mr. Creech has been
a feature of the services. He puts
his whole soul in his work.
Personally Mr. Price is a most
agreeable gentleman. A represen
tative of The Ledger had the pleasure
of meeting him Monday. His
bearing is that of the perfect Chris
tian gentleman and he is delightfully
entertaining. The meeting will in
all probability continue the remainder
of this week.

The Case Dismissed.
On Friday Win. Smith, of the Ezell
section, was arraigned before Esquire
I. G. Sarratt on the charge of arson.
After taking what testimoney there
was at hand Judge sarratt dismissed
the case on the ground that the evi
dence was insufficient to convict.
Thus the young man’s honor was
saved although a blot has been put
on his fair name in an attempt to
place the guilt of the crime on his
shoulders. It is nothing but proper
that all honest efforts should be made
to convict criminals but people should
be careful how they accuse and ar
raign men—especially a young man—
for crime, for ..o matter how innocent
the accused may be there will always
be some who will believe him guilty
until some one is convicted of the
offence.
The Johnson Rifles.
The Johnson Rifles, the company
from Union to which some of our
young men nave attached themselves
and gone to the war, is a company
with a history. In the confederate
war. under the gallant Captains,
(fuss Beaty and Johnson ttie Rifles,
on ninny ensanguined fields, made
old Union proud, and Capt. Hunter
and his officers and his men who
compose the company now, will do it
again.

Wilt We Celebrate?
We are well aware of the fact that
in these stirring times of war and ru
mors of war people are not apt to
take kindly or quickly to tbe idea of
a Fourth of July celebration, but
then The Ledger can eee no good
reason why Gaffney cannot g.-t up a
creditable celebration for tbe Fourth.
Again there is no reason why we
should give all our time and attention
to the ills of this life. War is cal
culated to arrest a man’s attention,
but the Indications are that before
the anniversary of the independence
of the United States that Cuba, with
our aid, will have gained her imle-
pendendence, so let us go to work
and whoop the thing upand have u
grand time, and if Cuba is free and
the war is over by that time, and we
sincerely trust that it will be, then
we can celebrate with lighter hearts
than we could otherwise. But by all
means ict us celebrate the Fourth
of July in magnificent style. What
say you all?

Gone to His Reward.
Mr. William Bright, who resided
in the Maud neighborhood, died last
Friday at an advanced age. Mr.
Bright was one of the best known
citizens of this section of the country
and leaves a large circle of friends
and relatives to mourn his death.
