PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. We are giad to report the continued fine prospect for large wheat and out crops. Col. T. Stobo Farrow has rented room of Dr. Garrett and is now in stalled in his new home. Elmore Lemaster and wife have moved into their handsome little cot tage on Oakland Avenue. W. A. Feeler and family moved into their new residence on corner of Grenard and Depot streets lust Mon day. Albert Fitzgerald, of Gaffney, whose name was not mentioned last week, also went to the army with the Johnson Rifles, of Union. Mr. Samuel Littlejohn, of Thickety, father of Mayor Littlejohn, of this city, is quite ill. The old gentleman is advanced in years and his recovery may prove doubtful. The full moon and the cold weath er which is said to always attend it in May, were on hand Friday with high winds and good showers in the lower part of the county. We are indebted to Clarence Tur ner for specimens of the most deli cious strawberries that we have seen this season. They were extraordinary in size and of excellent taste. Three of Gaffney’s gallants have made the discovery that enough of a thing is enough and that the rules are not suspended every time some one informs them that they are. We were glad to see a number of our worthy old veterans in this week collecting their pension money. Would that the State was able to compensate them as they deserve. Judge Sarratt had several parties before him Tuesday for violation of the dispensary law. One case was continued on account of the witnesses not all being present, while another was bound over to court. The regular meeting of the city council was held last Friday night. The routine business of the city fathers was dispatched with prompt ness. No special legislation of a definate character was disposed of. The many friends of Mr. J. D. Goudelock will he pleased to learn that he is convalescent after quite a serious attack of fever. He is able to be about his home but cannot yet resume control of his business down town. Our townsman. Prof W. S. Hall, after a creditable examination befo.9 the Supreme Court, has been admit ted to the bar. Prof Hall is a man of fine education, ability and char acter and wo predict for him success in his new profession. Contractor D. K. Cecil and a force of men are nowin the city to com mence work on the new carpet mills. The making of brick lias been going on for some time and everything is now in readiness to commence work on the construction of the plant. Among the attendants on the Cooper-Limestone picnic last Friday wore the following young ladies and gentlemen from Shelby. N. C.: Misses Jessie Brevard, Elsie Hall and Lila Brice. Messrs. A. J. Dundas, Eugene Purcell and Ralph Webb. Tomorrow afternoon from 4 to 0 o’cIock, Mr. J. Q. Little will throw open the doors of his handsome new home on Frederick street for the in spection of his friends and acquain tances. Mr. Little extends a cordial invitation to all who desire to attend the house warming. The city council having removed quite a lot of the dirt on the street running along side of Dr. Hamrick’s residence it seems that now is an op portune time to open up that street. The opening would prove quite a convenince to a large portion of the residents of that vicinity. Rev. B. P. Robertson will occupy the pulpit of the First Baptist church next Sabbath morning and evening. At the morning service he will give an account of the recent Baptist convention held in Norfolk, from which he has just returned. lu the evening the usual services will he held. The Ledger is in receipt of a postal from H. M. Gaines, who left hero to join the volunteer forces at Columbia last week, in which the writer aays all are well in camp and that the boys are enjoying themselves very well. We are always glad to hear from the Gaffney boys and hope they may all get back home mfely without a scratch. From private sources wo lean that the wet season has set in in Arkansas and that it is raining heavily and' the inhabitants are expecting the rivers to overflow their hanks and cause considerable damage. Bobo Wilkins, one of Cowpens mo«t prominent etlizens, was on our streets for a few hours yesterday. Attorney N. W. Hardin, of Blacks burg, made a profesrional visit to the city Thursday. James Parker, a prominent drug gist of Spartanburg, was in the city Friday. John Smith, of Clover, spent some days in Lhs city this week with his many friends. Mr. J.T. White, of the Thickety neighborhood, was in the city yester day and added his name to The Ledger list while here. Roy Osborne, of Blacksburg, was in the city Friday. Col. R. E. Allison, a prominent attorney of Lancaster, spent a few hours in the city last Tuesday. John Estes, of Etta Jane, made a business trip to the city Saturday. Mr. Estes is one of Cherokee’s most frugal farmers, lie raises his supplies at home and seldom comes to tor. n without bringing some of the prod ucts of ills farm lo sell. Mrs. Amanda Lee, of Etta Jane, was among the visitors in the city Tuesday. Capt. F. M. Molesworth, of the O. R. <fc C., was here yesterday. Dr. John G. Black, of Blacksburg, spent a short time in the city Friday. James T. Burges.one of the county’s thrifty farmers, was one of the throng in the city Saturday. While here he paid us an appreciated visit. J. D. Jones, who spends most of his time at the Mountain Creek Fac tory, four miles from Cowpens, spent some days at his home in the city this Week. Orderly Gold and Magistrate Bridges, of Blacksburg, came over on their wheels Friday and transact ed business. Hon. C. W. Wbisonant, of Wilkins- ville, paid The Ledger an appre ciated visit while in the city last Tuesday. Felder Phillips, of Webster, was in the city’ Monday. Miss Virginia Bates returned to her studies at C. L. Institute Monday after spending several days with her parents at Clinton. Ex-Judge 'Witherspoon, a very prominent and successful attorney of Yorkville, was in the city Tuesday on business. Lawyer James Monroe, of Union, was in the city Monday and Tuesday- on professional business. Dr. D. S. Ramseur, of Blacksburg, made a flying trip to the city Mon day. W. H. Goodlet, of Greenville, spent Tuesday in the city. J.C. Jefferies. Esq., spent Monday in Greenville, where he went on legal business. Dr. J. G. Black spent a few hours in the city yesterday on business. Mr. W. M. Anderson and wile, of Charlotte, N. C.. have arrived here and will make Gaffney their home. Mr. Anderson has taken charge of the Pearl Steam Laundry, of this city. They are at present stopping at the Limestone Inn. Rev. W. M. White, of Cowpens, was in the city Monday. Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Tate, of Webster, was in the city Monday on business, He paid The Ledger a stiort but appreciative visit while here. CUBA BOMBARDED. List of the Vessels Captured and Other Details of the Bombardment. Admiral Camp and Commodore Lipscomb invaded Cnba Inst Tuesday at 2:30 p. m., and captured three heavily armored vessels without any loss of life or property. The names of the vessels captured are "Black Julia.” "Yellow Julia” and "Maud Wilson.” The heaviest and mostly desired, the "Tuch Glenn” made its escape, it being a member of the Flying Squadron and capable of making 23 knots. The Admiral and Commodore didn’t give chase. _ The Mecklenburg Celebration. We are in receipt of an invitation to attend the unveiling of the monu ment to the signers of the Mecklen burg Declaration Of Independence at Charlotte on the 20th of this month. An elaborate programme has been a.ranged and the hospitable people of the (^ueeu City oi the Old North State will do all in their power to make the occasion one of the most memorable in the history of that city. Mecklenburg is the most fa mous county in the state and Char lotte tho foremost town in the state. The Ledger will be with the patriots in mind, soul and body and promises that Gaffney will send a creditable delegation, notwithstan ing the war fever now prevalent. R. & C., iepot to that company. Mr. Holmes came in u few days after and stated that our informant was in error and that he had not even considered the idea of selling out to the O. After Being Convicted of Murdering T. J. Tnmmier Dr. Bivings Suicide^ Dr. S. J. Bivings was found guilty of t!;e murder of T. J. Tritnmies in the Spartanburg court Tuesday. The jury recommended the prisoner to the mercy of the court. The trial lasted for nearly a week and the de fence set up the plea of insanity. Yesterday morning tho unfortunate man ended his own life by taking arsenic. What an awful sequel to a life made useless by the over indul gence of intoxicating drink. —- -• . A Picnic Catastrophe.
