Bla KSiifXt:, May —Uur town, always admired - -.for the charming picturesqueness of its location, has i,t>er looked prettier than it does now with the trees out in their now dress of rich green foliage, and the yards of many of our homes adorned with a profusion of beautiful flowers of every color and hue; thus com bining to a charming advantage, the gi-u' lous gifts of nature with the in- li 'lo/ent taste of man. The exciting war news of the past week is the absorbing topic of conver sation and interest to every class and occupation of our people; even the fanners, who are in the midst of u very busy season, come to town a little oftener than usual “just to hear the news." Mr. Mercer, an expert gardener and farmer, brought a large basket of english peas into town on Saturday afternoon, the first of the season. An exciting game of base hall was played on the graaed school ground Saturday by our local teams, the “town boys club and the shop boys club of the (>. K. A - 0. rail road. The day was charming and the game was witnessed by a large number of uur citizens. Mr. I.. Starr acted as umpire. The score stood lit to 19 in favor of the town toys. General passenger agent, S. B. LurnpKin. lias been on a business trip to Cincinnati. < >hio. Miss Libber Byars, of Sharon, is visiting friends and relatives here. The house of Rih-y Whisonant, a respectable and industrious colored man, caught lire Monday evening from a defective line but. being dis covered promptly, was extinguished without much damage. The ladies Guild of the Kpiscopal church, at this place, will have a ba zaar on Friday evening next, begin ning at fj o’clock, at Cherokee Inn hall, at which time will be sold some beautiful articles, both useful and or namental. Also ice cream and cake will be served. .Music, both vocal and instrumental, will be furnished for the occasion and it will he a pleasant place to spend the evening. May 2.—The Sun day School I’nion of the Northern Section of tlie Broad River Baptist Association will meet with the Buck Greek church on Saturday before the lifth Sunday in May. 1898. at 11 o'clock, a. m. The following is the programme: Introductory sermon by G. M. Fos ter; 0. M. Teal, alternate. Enrollment of delegates and organ ization. Recess fifteen minutes. Devotional exercises by Moderator. 1st t^uery—"Is pride in its style injurious in our churches in this day?” by J. J. Ezei! and others. 2nd t^uery—••What is the best method of conducting our Sunday Schools," by K. I). Edwards and others. Question box. Dismission. Sl'NDAY. Meet at 9 a. m. Mr Hickson’s able sermon on •‘Christian I atriotism.” His text cun he found i.. Romans, ninth chapter, first sec- ot.d and third verses. He preached in his usual manner, calling a spado a spade, and trying with all his power to arouse in us more patriotism for both our country and for Christ. Rev. Mr. Bridges, of your city, paid us a pleasant visit last Thurs day. Bobby, the little son of Neily Dris- eal has been very sick with pneurao- nia but is improving. The children of uncle Frank Northey met lust Thursday at his home and guve hiih a dinner in honor of ids eighty third birth day. The grand-children, including your corres pondent, were also present. Lindsey Little, of Shelby, N. C., has been visiting relatives here but returned home to-day. We have been hoping the war might he stopped without sacrificing so many of our noble Americans but the contemptable Spaniards must be whipped, and that well.
