C., APRIL 23. 1898. OLD VETERANS DEPART They Gather at the City by the Sea for a Jolly Good Time. Tuesday morning at 9:15 Jake Carpenter Camp ami Camp Jefferies, L\ 0. V., and a number of civiliians left via. the O. K. & C. 11. R. in a special coach provided for them for this occasion, for Charleston, where they go to attend the annual State re-union of the United Confederate Veterans of South Carolina. The party were in line spirits and each | one seemed bent on having a good | time, fo many it was a reminder of the time that stirred men’s souls | when they went forth to Sullivans i Island to take up arms in defence of the land they loved. And the present hostilities between the United States and Spain served to quicken the flow of the blood in their veins. While there the time will be passed in narrating the oft repeated stories of the late unpleasantness. May all have a good time and come home refreshed in mind, body and soul, anu may each and every one live to enjoy many more of these re-unions. Among those who composed the party were: D. A. Thomas, G. W. Mc- Kown, P. S. Webber, Chas. T. Bridges and wife, Thomas Kubanks, A. A. Sarratt, Moses Wood, S. A. Stacy and daughter, M. M. Tate, Wm. Jeff eries, Jno. McKown, John Service, K. C. Patrick, J. T. Humphries, C. J. Hughes, J. Little. Judson Sarrutt, Capt. James 11. Bell, Misses Bessie Thompson, Mury Jefferies, and Sullie Jennings. Misses Mary Brown and Olive McKown, sponsors, Missies : Annie Sarrutt and Mattie McKown, maids of honor, respectively for the two camps were also with the party. - - - - The Farmers Mutual. The Farmers Mutual Insurance Association for Ctierokee County, met at the court house, on April 4th, and transacted business of impor tance, as follows: The enlistment of new members, the reading an*l adopting of the by-Laws, rules and regulations as drafted by the com mittee, the election of a Vice Pres ident, to wit: C. W. Whisonant; the election of township directors us fol lows: Gowdeysville—G. W. McKown, G. W. Lemaster, and J.T. Moorhead; Draytonville—Win. Jefferies, Win. Jones, and D. C. Painter; Lime stone—Wm. Phillips, Moses Wood, and Rev. A. D. Davidson; White Plains—B. F. Bonner; the election of the other two directors for this town ship was deferred until the next meeting; Cherokee No 1.—E. It. .'iapoch, F. H. Dover, and R. A. West brook. The election of directors for Cherokee township No 2 was deferred until the next meting us was also the election of an agent. The directors of the diff< rent town ships were especially requested to look after new members and have their property valued by next meeting, that their policies may be made up then, thereby giving them an oppor tunity of entering on the same basis as old members. The Secretary was requested to have the new policies printed and ready to be signed at the next meeting. Every funner, or any one else, interested in this insurance should attend the next meeting to be held at the court house on next Mon day, the second day of May. Limestone's Delegates. At a meeting of the Limestone Democratic Club held in the Mayor's court room lust Saturday afternoon a permanent organization was affected by the election of I. G. Sarratt as president and Ed. H. DcCunip us secretary. On motion of Col. T. B. Butler a committee was appointed to select delegates to be submitted to the club to be voted upon to repre sent the club in the county conven tion. The committee retired and after deliberation reported the follow ing names which were unanimously elected: I. G. Sarratt, J. B. Bell, W. N. Turner, T. Stobo Farrow, W. S. Hall. Jr., T. B Butler, 8. M. Lit tlejohn, Moses Wood, R. A. Jones, J. B. Ross, J. N. Lipscomb, John E. Jefferies, Calvin Teal, T. J. Camp bell. Joe Whelchell, T. Davenport, L. It. Ross, Ed. H. DeCamp, D. A. Thomas and N. Lipscomb. Several of the gentlemen elected us delegates were not present at the club meeting, but it is loped that all of them will ho on hand promptly at 11 o’cIoca Monday, May 2nd, when the county convention will be called to order. The convention will meet at the court house. — — • - — The Mongolian Pheasant. The Mongolian Pheasant is being successfully raised In Greenville county by Messrs. R. G. McPherson, W. E. Beattie and H. C. Beattie. These gentlemen intend to obtain the shooting privilege of Paris Mountain where the pheasant will he put, and thus protect them. The experiment with pheasants in Greenville proves that this climate is suited for them, and we hope that some of our pro gressive Cherokee people will com mence raising them in our new coun- ty. We have a number of places in the county that it seems to us is well suited for the experiment wjiich, if successful here, will soon stitck our forest and fields with this desirable game bird. With our section well stocked with tlje Mongolian pheasant we would have shooting which would be coveted by all lovers of the sport and our own people would revel in it. Saturday in the City. Saturday come in with light clouds and a few early drops of rain and the weather bureau predicting snows. The clouds remained more or less heavy, giving the people a good time to come to town. Business and war news both were at work, and by noon we had a fair Saturday gathering of the yeomanry of Cherokee. At noon when most were in and anxiety for war news was at a high degree the clouds grew heavy and a much needed rain fell. This however did not allay the eagerness for war news, and the crowd increased in and around the DuPre Drug Company, store where the news is dispensed. The war gossip of the country was awaited and received with an interest incident only to wartimes. Ships were reported lost, and ships were reported captured, and the bystanders gave vent to emotions produced by success or disaster. During the day a report came say ing an American merchant vessel, continuing IGOJXK) bushels of wheat had been captured by the Spariards. A bystander quickly said that wont do, t’.ats bread.” The interest continued through the day which shows how war stirs up a nation. Ihe heaviest rains of the season Bill in the afternoon Baseball. The boys had a very pretty prac tice game of baseball at the hall ground last Friday afternoon. The game was between the tirst and sec ond nines. The features of the game were the pitching of Richardson, Hopper and Humphries and the catching of Brown and Clary. The field work on both sides was rather ragged, but it must be remembered that the hoys have hud little or no practice and that it will be several weeks before they can get in good form. There is lots of good timber in both teams and we can conscien tiously say that the team that meets them on the diamond need not expect a walk over. The baseball outfit has arrived and the boys will have a game tomorrow afternoon. They have been practic ing up lately and the game may Lc expected to be a snappish one. Let a large crowd go out to encourage the players. Perfect order will be main tained on the grounds and ladies need have no fear that anything will be said or done that is not compatible to good conduct. —« «— ——- Unclaimed Letters. The flag of the Cuban Republic according to best information, is composed of five broad stripes alter nately deep blue and silvery white, hearing a single white star in the centre of a triangle of dark red, its base running along the staff for the whole breadth of the flag and its apex reaching nearly to the centre of the middle blue stripe. Kous place Mr. W. J. Daniel found a letter written by Mr. J. Q Carpenter to Mr. D. B. Rosa while the former was at Sullivan's Island preparing to go into the war between the state*. The writer evidently had a proper conception of the situation, us his letter shows that he made prepara tions for the fate that eventually overtook him.
