To Leave Gaffney. The many friends in GalTney and Cherokee of Dr. and Mrs. J. Roddy •Miller wili regret to learn that they have determined to move to Rock Hill. Dr. Miller has been practicing medicine and surgery here several years, and by his skill has acquired an enviable reputation. He is an ac tive member in the literary society here and, with Mrs. Miller, will he much missed, socially. We predict for the Doctor a brilliant career and assure him that GalTney will be glad that he once lived here. Rock Hill's gain isGalfney’s loss. « -«•*- •- • — The Bulletin Board. Dr. Bep DuPrfc has a crowd around the door of the DuPre Drug Company these days. He has a bulletin board and posts on it the stirring events now transpiring in the country as they occur, thus keeping GalTney and all visitors informed of the exciting status of all peace or war measures of both the United States and Spain. The people appreciate this kindness which is no little trouble and expense to the Doctor. Transfers of Real Estate. By reference to the Auditor’s hooks we learn that since the creation of Cherokee county, there have been two hundred and fifty deals in real estate in the county. In Colored Sooial Circles. Miss Essie McIntyre, of Shelby, was the guest of Mrs. Hattie Albright, for several days last week. Important Visitors. Mr. N. A. Dunning, secretary of the United Land Company, of Wash ington, D. C.. accompanied by Mr. BtClair, a civil engineer, was in the city several days this week looking at property in this section. They were driven over the city and sur rounding county by Mr. Moses Wood and they expressed themselves pleas ed with the prospects in Cherokee. Gen. M. C. Butler, who directed Mr. Dunning’s attention to this State, is one of the directors of the company. We are glad to see that investors are being attracted to Cherokee. Chero kee is on the upward move and her soil, climate, minerals and water power makes her a promising field for people who wish to make profita ble investments and to working peo ple who wish to improve their condi tions. We give a cordial invitation to all such to come among us, and assure them of a hearty greeting and just treatment by our people. ——» ■ Lemaster—Kendrick. Mr. R. E. Lemaster, a prosperous young business man of this city, and Miss Nettie Kendrick, one of Gaff ney’s most beautiful and charming ladies, were married on the 7th inst., at the home of the bride’s parents on North Limestone street by Rev. B. P. Robertson. Only the immediate fam ilies of the bride and groom wen present. Mr. and Mrs. Lemaster left on the vestibule the same day for a short bridal tour after which they returned to Gaffney and will soon he keeping house in their beautiful new home which Mr. Lemaster hud pre pared in advance. These worthy young people de servedly have all Gaffney for their friends, who, with The Ledger, hear tily congratulate them and wish for them the success and happiness they so well deserve. Attention Democrats. The attention of the presidents of the various township clubs in Chero kee county is called to the notice of Vice-President Sarratt in another column. Those who read the notice last week had better read it again as there was an error in the notice us pub lished. It is essential that the voters of the county take some inter est in this matter and that good, true and competent men be selected to represent the clubs in the conven tion to he held in Gaffney on the 2nd of May. So let the clubs all have a good attendance and let each one se lect their most representative men to attend the convention. Let us have the most intelligent convention of any county in the State. We have the material, so let us use it. -• • Let Intelligence Prevail. We publish the constitution of the democratic party of South Carolina this week in full for the benefit of those who may be interested in pol itics. There can he no excuse for anyone making a monkey of himseif in his club meeting if he will only take the trouble to inform himself in regard to the matter. The Ledger is not in politics, and it does not pro pose to get into politic, hut we would like to see intelligence and patriotism in evidence in ttie politics of our county. Baseball. Teams are being organized all around us and some of them are al ready doing fine playing on our fields. Gaffney has fine material for a team and it is time our boys were moving. ON.SUMPTION A False Rumer. Some one about Gaffney has been saying that a bill had been passed by congress to pension all Confeder ate soldiers for life if they would en list in the United States army for, and serve ninety days. The absurdity of such a course would apparently appear to any one, but as a few are talking as if they gave credence to this idle talk, we want to say to the old soldiers that no such bill has been passed by congress. The United States does not want your services for ninety days or any other length of time. It is the services of your boys that they will be after if they need soldiers. There are a great many Confederates who would not care to have their names on the Uni ted States pension roll if their ser vices in the Confederate army was nob mentioned. The Reunion in Charleston. As the time for the reunion in Charleston approches the old veter ans are moving quicker and every thing now indicates a big turn out from Cherokee. We wish the dear Old fellows a happy time and hone many of their friends will go with them. Charleston is doing every thing to make it pleasant for them.
