Fitzgerald. Senator Jefferies in the City. Senator Jeiferies was in the city Saturday. He reports having had a hard but pleasant session in the State Senate. Senator Jelleries has kindly agreed to furnish The Ledger with copies of all the bills relating to Cherokee, and we will take pleasure in publishing them for the benefit of our readers. In another column will he found the bill providing for the carrying out of the findings of the Commission appointed to adjust the indebtedness between the several counties of Union, York, Spartan burg and Cherokee. ■— -■ —»- «— Amos Clary Debates. In speaking of the public debate bv the Fhilosophian Literary Society of Furman University last Friday, the Greenville correspondent of the Spartanburg Herald says: “A. Clary was the extempore speaker and was given the subject ‘Below Paris Mountain lies Green ville.' He spoke with eloquence and humor and was warmly applauded." Mr. Clary is one of Gaffney’s boys of whom she is proud. Reception. The young ladies of Cooper-Lime stone Institute held a reception Tues day evening. A number of their friends from this and other places were present, and all report a delight ful evening. Limestone does noth- intr by halves. The Ledger regrets being unable to attend in response to its kind invi tation. — Schools Give Holiday. All the schools in the city sus pended on the 22nd in honor of Washington birthday. Business has been active this week. Good crowds in the city every day. Hugh Wilkins, who carries the mail from this place to Pacolet, is as regular as a clock. Clint Jones, who has beei suffering some time with an injured foot and ankle, is now improving. Brown <fc Alexander have opened a first-class meat market on Limestone street iu front of the post office. Builders in Gaffney are all on the move, and new buildings are making their appearance in every quarter of the city. Milton K. Parrish, of Clifton, and Miss Sallio Sloan, of Glendale, wore married on yesterday by Rev. J. A. Bell of this city, A. J. Holman and Miss G. V. Gaff ney were married on the Kith instant, by Rev. D. W. Thomasson, at the residence of the bride’s parents. The intensely dry time for this season of the year, was cut off lust Thursday night by a gentle rain which continued through most of the day Friday. Prof. W. F. Watson, of Furman University, will lecture in the City Hall, on the evening of the 4th of March, for tlie benefit of the First Baptist Church. Capt. James B. Bell, of the Chero kee bar, has associated Hon. Wm. Munro and Mr. James Munro, of Union, with him in his law practice in this county. This is a strong team. Town Clerk Baker asks us to say that a penalty will be enforced on all town tax delinquents after the last day of February. So you better hurry up and settle or the marshall will be after you. L. B. Surratt, of Grassy Pond, planted corn on February 17th. Some of his neighbors are of the openion that Mr. Sarratt has started tooiearly. Time will demonstrate the wisdom or folly of his progressiveness. Rev. and Mrs. S. T. Creech are now housekeeping on Frederick street. Mr. Creech is active in his work which is growing under his adminis tration. We predict for him a suc cessful year, one of pleasure to him self and benefit to his charges. Baxter Wood, of Pacolet, was in the city yesterday planting trees on his Limestone street lots. Planting trees evinces good taste, and as all our people are possessed of this envi able acquirement, we feel sure that Mr. Wood’s example will be followed by many. Hon. W. G. Austell, has not been on the streets since his return from the Legislature until Tuesday. Mr. Austell was unwell while in Columbia and has been confined to his home most of the time since his return. His friends are glad that he is now able]to be out among them. At the recent term of the General Sessions court for Cheros.ee county every criminal brought before the court was convicted of the crime of which he was charged except Rufus Miller, a negro, who was charged with the murder of Tom Greer an other negro. Miller was defended by Messrs. J. C. Jefferies and J. F. Web ster. of the Cherokee bar. G. M. Stuckey, a young attorney from Sumter, has been in the city several days, and after looking over the ground has determined to locate here and open an office for the pra- tice of his profession. We welcome Mr. Stuckey to our city and trust that he will succeed, and that his coming to Gaffney will always be a source of gratification to him. — « Meeting of Stockholders. The stockholders of the Gaffney Carpet Manufacturing Company met on Tuesday and formed a permanent organization. J. E. Bierck, of Philadelphia, was elected president, treasurer and su perintendent; H. Fay Gaffney, secre tary; I). C. Ross, register. The directors are H. D. Wheat, L. Baker, S. L. Cutting, J. G. Wardlaw, J. A. Carroll, J. F. Bierck, W. C. Carpen ter and F. G. Stacy, all of this city, except one. The directors elected an Executive Committee of three members, to wit. H. D. Wheat, J. F. Bierck and J. A. Carroll, who will have general supervision of the business. Plans for the buildings are being made and us soon as received work will be commenced. Gaffney has demonstrated that fine cotton goods can be made In the South and will now show to tlie world that carpet can be made also. And Gaffney is not near done yet. Watch! Cotton Market. People You Know and People You Don’t Know. Fred T. Harrish, one of Cherokees best citizens, was in the city yester day. W. O. Lipscomb was home this week from his railroad work in North Carolina. He returned to his work on Tuesday. Mr. John Moss, a venerable Chero- keean from near Blacksburg, spent Tuesday and yestt-rduy in the city with Mr. Henry Wilson. Dr. Henry Tate, of Pacolet Mill, left this week for New York, where he goes to take a special course in obstetericks and surgery. T. J. Estes, J. u. Estes, II. T. Fates, Sum Lee, Will Howel and Jimmie Strain, some of lower Chero kee’s hustling young farmers, were in town yesterday, selling cotton, butter and chickens. John O. Tate, of Asbury, paid his respects to The Ledger while in the city Tuesday. Mr. Tate reports his section well up with farm work. M. S. Blackwood, of Star Farm, and W. B. Blackwood, of Gowdys- ville, came In to see The Ledger on Saturday. These gentlemen are two of the working Blackwood boys so well known and liked in Cherokee. They know how to farm, and make the best hands on the place them selves. J. M. Collins, of Ezells, was among the large number of progressive Cher okee planters in the city Saturday. J. I). J tileries, Jr., was in the city yesterday on business. W. A. Wheat, the efficient super intendent of Cowpens mill, was in tlie city on Sunday visiting relatives. M. B. Scruggs, Esq., of Ezells, honored The Ledger with a call on Saturday. Squire Scruggs is tlie effi cient magistrate in his section. H. F. Tindal, a bright young Cher okee fanner and a good friend of The Ledger paid us a visit Monday. C. H. Reynolds, of Thickety, paid The Ledger a short but pleasant visit yesterday. John Lowe, of Pacolet Mills paid The Ledger a pleasant visit on Satur day. Mr. Lowe had not been in the city in seven years and expressed himself suprised at our wonderful progress. Uncle Jim Riley Blanton, was in to see us on Saturday. Uncle Jim is not so fleshy us he once was, but he is in good health and is by far the largest man in cherokeecounty. G. W. McKown, of Mercer, was among the true Cherokee farmers in the city yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Daniels, of Now- berry, spent some days in the city this week on a visit to their son, Sam A Daniels. Miss Ada Wood left the city yester day for a visit of some days to to relatives at Pacolet. 1). A. Gaston, a young Cherokee farmer from Buffalo, came in to see The Ledger while in the city on Monday. Hon. Wm. Munro, of Union, was in the city Saturday on professional business. Mr. Munro has many friends in Cherokee and is always welcome by many in the city. R. H. Taylor, of Thickety, while in the city on business Monday, honored The Ledger with a visit. Come again Mr. Taylor as your kind of visits suit us. E. W. Jolly, of the Grassy Pond neighborhood, was in the city Satur day. Mr. Jolly is one of our best young planters, and a friend of whom The Ledger is proud. J. J. Rippny. of Blacksburg, paid The Ledger a visit on Monday. Robert Roundtree, of Arkwright Mills was in the city on Sunday among hie friends. L. I). Bonner, of Ravenna, was in the city Monday. He paid us a pleasant visit while here. D. L. Vassey. of Thickety, one of Cherokees thrifty farmers and first class citizens, spent a short time with The Ledger while in the city on Sat urday. G. W. Chalk, of Ravenna, while in the city on Monday, culled on The Ledger. Miss Eva Hall has returned to her home at Wellridge. She was accom panied by Miss Alma Lynch. Miss Hall will be missed in Gaffney where she has made many friends, some of whom are expected to visit Wellridge before a great while. Col. T. B. Sold by Cherokee Draff Co. Rowland Tate Killed. On lust Saturday in the afternoon Rowland Tate, a native of this place, and a son of the late 1). W. Tate was shot and mortally wounded by one Perry Williams at Crowders Mountain, near Kings Mountain, in North Caro lina, and died on Sunday. H ! s rela tives here were notified by telegraph and his brother Laurens vent at once to his bedside, but arrived only a half hour before his brother died. The body arrived here on the 2 25 p. m. train on Monday where it was met by the young man’s numerous relatives and friends and carried to the home of his undo Henry Tate, F?q., near Webster in this county, and was buried at ‘‘Whig Hill" where rests the bodies of his family for sev eral generations. • a,* aSSo', t.. * Rowland was twenty-two years old on tlie sixth of this month.
