Tex Wilkins is building a hand some cottage on Logan street. Yost Metz has ids nice cottage on Logan street nearly completed. Henry W. Ross is assisting Col. W. 1). Camp in the Auditor’s office. Auditor W. D. Camp is out in the county now, assessing property. R. S. Lipscomb, has recently built a handsome and commodious barn. Thompson Eubanks, of this city, who was sick a short while ago, is well again. If you vote in the coming aity elec tion you will have to consult Regis trar Phillips in time. Get shade trees and set them out. In a few years their beauty will make you proud of your work. J. R. Maddox, and Miss Mary Clary, both of this city, was married last Sunday by I. G. Surratt, Esq. D. C. Painter’s big two horse plow is running now every day when it is possible. Drate says it pays him. J. W. Littlejohn has bought his father’s old homestead near Timber Ridge and has moved to il. Ruiluing is still the order ef the day in Gaffney. You can see build ings going up in every quarter of the city. Crossings like the ones recently put across Limestone Street, would be ap preciated by pedestrians on other much used streets. Capt. W. H. Richardson is re modeling one of his buildings on Lime stone Street. We learn that it will be used for a law office. In addition to the numerous new buildings which are buing built in the city, quite a number of old ones are being greatly improved. J. F. Gaffney, of Shelby, is in the city looking after his property here. Mr. Gaffney will build several cot tages on his lots before he returns to his home. We regret to hear of the death of Charles Webster, in Arkansas, last December. Mr. Webster was once a citizen of Gaffney and was a brother of Judge J. E. Webster. John S. Black has finished his new house in the city and lias moved into it. Mr. Black is one of the thrifty farmers of Cherokee and will still give his attention to his farms. George McSwain, of Lattimore, N. C., was married last Sunday to Miss Lillie Webb, of this city, by Rev. J. W. Walker at the home of the bride. Lattimore will be their future home. The Cherokee Drug Company have removed from their former place of business to the stand recently vacated by The Boston store. Their beauti ful oak fixtures show off to good ad vantage in their new stand. John H. Fowler, of Etta Jane, was in the city last Tuesday selling his last year’s crop of cotton. Mr. Fow ler is one of the big farmers of Chero kee and drives the finest teams of mules to his wagons that come to Gaffney. Rev. S. T. Creech will preach next Sunday at Gethsemane at 11 a. m., Williams Chapel at 3 p. m. Song service at Wilson’s Chapel, Friday, the 14th Inst., at 2 p. m. Gethsemane Saturday 15th inst., at 2 p. m. All are invited. Win. Wisher, of Cherokee Township No. 1, sent to this office by Z. B. V. Starns a mammoth twelve pound tur nip. So far this beats any turnip we have yet had presented to us. Mr. Wisher has our distinguished appreciation. Henry Paris, white, and Andy Champion, colored, were before U. S. Commissioner Bell last Tuesday for violation of internal revenue law. Paris was bound over to the next term of the United States court, and Champion was discharged. J. H. Littlejohn and R. W. Davis, of Gowdeysville, were in the city last Tuesday. They started early and caught a large possum en route, and sold it in town for fifty cents. Mr. Davis says he cannot pay more than 3U0 pounds of culluu fur u luu of finished guano, and if the price is more than thut his section will not use it. O. W. O. Hardman, when sheriff of Tyler Co., W. Yu., was at one time almost prostrated with a cold. James A Pearson, of Bolinsville. was among the Cherokeeans in Gaff ney last Saturday. C. T. Huggins, Esq., was in the city yesterday. S. S. Littlejohn, of Ravenna, call ed on The Ledger a short while ago. Charles Borders, of Earles, N. C., spent several days in the city the present Veek, the guest of his aunt, Mrs. W. J. Hopper. W. W. Alexander, of Blacksburg, was in the city yesterday. Mr. Alex ander will move to Gaffney soon. X. Blanton, of Grassy Pond, was among his friends in the city last Saturday. Miss Daisy Hart, of Yorkville, is visiting her uncle, J. D. Jones, cor ner of Limestone and Jefferies streets. Miss Daisy has many friends in Gaff ney who are always glad of her pres ence. L. Morgan, one of our old friends, called on us last Tuesday. Miss Minnie Garvin, of Orangeburg, arrived in the city Monday. She is attendng Cooper-Limestone Institute. A. G. Davis, of Mercer, was on our streets last Saturday. J. D. Mabry, of Asbury, was in the city last Thursday and called on The Ledger. Hon. W. G. Austell, one of the rep resentatives of this county, left the city last Sunday afternoon for Co lumbia to attend the session of the General Assembly. W. O. Lipscomb who has a con tract for grading several miles of railroad in North Carolina, was at home a few days this week. \ D. O. Wilson and wife, of Cleve land Springs, N. C., and B. E. Put nam, of Double Shoals, spent some time the past week with thoir uncle, Rev. W. T. Thompson on Victoria avenue. Jesse Sanders, of AVilkinsville, was in the city last Saturday and culled on The Ledger. Our old friend J. P. White, of York ville, was in the city last Tuesday. Mrs. W. L. Lipscomb was in the city this week visiting relatives. R. C. Patrick, of Mercer, was among The Ledger’s callers yesterday. Mr. Patrick is one of our meat progressive citizens and a friend of whom we are proud. . Col. A. Tripp, of the O. R. C., was in the city last Monday. D. C. Painter was in to see us yes terday. L. C. Clary, of Macedonia, wab in the city last Saturday. M. W. Brown, of Ravenna, made a business trip to this city last Tues day. W. B. Goudelock, of Gowdeyville, was in the city Monday. Robt. Kirby, of Lumber Ridge, was in the city Saturday and called on us. We had a pleasant call from J. F. Patrick last Tuesday. W. A. Donnal, was in to see The Ledger last Saturday. D. J. Pugh, of Mercer, was in the city yesterday and paid The Ledger a visit. Hugh Ray, of Madison county N. C., who was raised in this section and served in Co. M. Palmetto Sharp- shoots S. C. V., during the Confeder ate war, is on a visit to relatives in the county. He was in the city yester day seeing his old friends. W. D. Goforth, of Cowpens, was in the city last Monday and culled on The Ledger. H. T. Criegler. a prominent busi ness man of Spartanburg, was in the city last Tuesday. G. C. Humphries, of Byarsville, N. C., graced The Ledger office with his presence last Saturday. Mrs. Jas. H. Downey, of Pacolet, who has been visiting her parents, Capt. and Mrs. H. P. Griffith, for several days, has returned to her home. James T. Morehead, of Gowdeys ville, was in the city yesterday. Mr. Morehead is a successful Cherokee farmer. Captured. John Martin, a negro, was arrested here some months ago by the police for a trivial offence, but who broke jail and added to his offence by taking a negro woman out with him, was re captured last Thursday by the police and returned to jail where he is likely to remain until the next term of the court of General Sessions when he will be interviewed by Solicitor Henry relative to releasing a prisoner and carrying concealed weapons. How the Young Folks Did Enjoy It. The young people assembled them selves together Tuesday evening in the pretty hall over W. O. Lipscomb it Bro’s. new store and spent the even ing pleasantly in tripping the light fantastic. The german was led by Mr. R. K. Monroe. The affair was under the supervis ion of Mr. Will Johnson, which is sufficient guarantee of its success. The music was simply delightful and all passed a very pleasant evening. Among the attendants were : Ladies —Mrs. X. H. Littlejohn and A. B. Gaines, chaperons; Misses Hart, of Yorkville, Flora Galloway Bessieand Ora Thompson. Peden Maynard Smith. Joe McArthur. J. G. Spencer, Julian Lipscomb, X. II. Littlejohn and A. B. Guinea. A Singular Accident. A peculiar fatal accident occurred near Pacolet last Friday. The 14- year-old daughter of Mr. J. D. Scott, a well to-do farmer of that section was sitting before the fire m a rocking chair rocking backward and forth. The child leaned back too far, and the chair toppled over. The girl’s neck was broken and she died in a few minutes. Her head hit the floor first, and the entire weight of the body was thrown on the neck, which broke under the strain. Physicians were summoned, but be fore they arirved the child was dead. Just a few minutes before, the entire family were seated around the the fireplace talking in a merry mood and the sad accident horrified the family. A Smallpox Scare. A small child of Mr. Thomas Hen dricks had some kind of an eruption appear on its skin a few days ago, and the report has gone out that James A. Pearson, who had seen many eases of smallpox while in the Confederate army went to see the child and said it had smallpox. Mr. Pearson requested us to say that he did see the child, that it had nothing like any smallpox that he had ever seen, and that he never said it had smallpox. They Need a Postoffice. On account of the removal of P. Y. Poole from Gowdeyville the postoffice has been discontinued. This a great inconvenience to the people in that section, as the nearest postoffice is Sunny Side, which is three and a half miles distant. There is a strip down there of about ten miles in which there is no postoffice. Cannot the postoffice department do some thing to relieve the abomnlable mail facilities in that section?
