A Singular Accident.
A peculiar fatal accident occurred
near Pacolet last Friday. The 14-
year-old daughter of Mr. J. D. Scott,
a well to-do farmer of that section
was sitting before the fire m a rocking
chair rocking backward and forth.
The child leaned back too far, and
the chair toppled over. The girl’s
neck was broken and she died in a few
minutes. Her head hit the floor first,
and the entire weight of the body was
thrown on the neck, which broke
under the strain.
Physicians were summoned, but be
fore they arirved the child was dead.
Just a few minutes before, the entire
family were seated around the the
fireplace talking in a merry mood and
the sad accident horrified the family.
A Smallpox Scare.
A small child of Mr. Thomas Hen
dricks had some kind of an eruption
appear on its skin a few days ago,
and the report has gone out that
James A. Pearson, who had seen
many eases of smallpox while in the
Confederate army went to see the
child and said it had smallpox. Mr.
Pearson requested us to say that he
did see the child, that it had nothing
like any smallpox that he had ever
seen, and that he never said it had
smallpox.
They Need a Postoffice.
On account of the removal of P. Y.
Poole from Gowdeyville the postoffice
has been discontinued. This a great
inconvenience to the people in that
section, as the nearest postoffice is
Sunny Side, which is three and a half
miles distant. There is a strip
down there of about ten miles in
which there is no postoffice. Cannot
the postoffice department do some
thing to relieve the abomnlable mail
facilities in that section? We sin
cerely trust it will.
