One of the most enjoyable occa sion! of the holiday! came oil on Friday night in the spacious hall over W. O. Lipscomb’a new store on Grenard street. Our young people gathered in the hall early, found a string band in readiness, the music began and soon all were in the merry dance and kept it up until the "wee sum” hours, when to the strains of "home sweet home” all left for their respective homes feeling better for the pleasure of this social occasion. Among the ladies present were Mrs. W. 0. Lipscomb, Mrs. E. H. Gaines, Mrs. John E. Chalk, Mrs. \V. YV. Thomas, Mrs. A. Ii. Gaines, Misses Elsie and May Hall of Shelby, Floy Montgomery, of Alabama. Annie Wood, Effie Hopper, Lillian Hopper. Nellie Wood, Flora Galloway, Maggie Galloway, Lees Lynch, Edna Sarratt, Olive Sarratr, Ella Hays, Bessie Thompson, Ora Thompson, Jannie Thompson, Juliet Lipscomb, Carrie Feden and Kale Summers. Found Dead. the was Last Sunday about 12 o’clock body of Joseph Jones a negro found dead in, the road between James Phillip’s house and State Line. Coroner A. J. McCraw on Monday summoned Dr. YV. A. Fort to exam ine the body and impanneled the fol lowing named citizens as a jury of in quest; Phillip Ray, M. T. Phillips, J. J. McCraw, Jonas Y’assey, Nathan Byars, O. C. Hames. J. S. Paris, J. G. Paris, A. R. Scruggs, Will YVad- Kins and Ed. Davis. After viewing the body and hearing the evidence of several witnesses the jury returned a verdict that the man’s death was caused by being drunk and exposed to the freezing rain of last Saturday night. New Year's Greeting. The song service at the Presbyte rian church last Sunday evening was very successful. The rendition by Mrs. Allein of Schubert’s Serenade with the words of "Jesus lover of my soul” was excellent. Miss Mont gomery also sang very nicely. In fact, all did well and the audience was very well pleased with tbe entire programme. - ——- —— Q£)Tbe New Methoidist Minister. Rev. Mr. Dent, who was assigned to this city by tbe Methodist confer ence, arrived in the city last week with his family. Mr. Dent preached his first sermon in his church last Sunday to a large congregation. All were well pleased with Mr. Dent and the sermon, and wish for him a use ful and pleasant sojourn in our city. Have Moved to Tbe City. Mrs. O. O. H. Clary has moved to the city and Is occupying one of the McCraw houses on depot street. Gaffney greets such people as Mrs. Clary and her family with a hearty welcome. To Begin His Work. S. T. Creech, new pastor on tbe Gaffney circuit, commences his la bors by preaching at Wilson’s Chapel next Sunday at 11 a. m., and at Getb- semane at 3 p. m. *H<1 bT (irmniau O N s U M P T IG Rev. Amos Clary. Rev. Amos Clary preached an In- t»resting sermon In the First Baptist church last Sunday night. YYe be lieve this is Mr. Clary’s first-appear ance in the pulpit in this city, al though we claim him for he was rais ed in thh section. YY'heu Amos first began to attend the schools in this city, he manifested the same earnestness of purpose that we all see in him to-day. Trained by honest hard-wortcing parents, it was easy for him to sta»t off right, and his own honesty of purpose and Christian character has kept, him ns truly to the lines of prosperity as is the needle to the pole. We predict for him a useful future in his chosen work. Last Fiiday. There whs probably the largest gathering of people in the city last Friday that has ever been here on a private occasion. People were here from every section of the county and, be it said to the credit of all Chero kee, that it was a peaceful gathering. YY'e are glad to chronicle such events and may it always be so.
