We that have never seen New
York or our dear old city by the sea,
know they are a reality, though our
eyes have never beheld them. We
have heard others talk of them and
our faith has a strong foundation to
rest on.
Can we not believe God's word
about that glorious city, not made
with hands,” eternal in the heavens,
that He has prepared for t he faithful ?
Our faith can be on a firm foundation
if we would trust our dear Master’s
loving hand to lead us through the
dark dreary ways of life. But alas!
the faith of the human heart is too
weak.itistoo much like Peter’s,whose
heart failed when the waves were
about to engulf his trembling form.
Our thoughts dwell too much on the
fading beauties of earth, more than
that continuing city; men build large
cities and lay up treasures in them,
and above all set their hearts on
t hem, but their foundation is of sand ;
they will perish with the using, but
the city to come lias a firm founda
tion whose builder and maker is God.
“The way leading to that happy
place is the straight and narrow way.” i
Why do the noble Missionaries dare
the storm of the ocean and endure ;
the hardships and trials of a mission- j
aries life? Only to point those who '
have never heard of Jesus to t he I
“New Jerusalem.” Ought we not to |
uphold aud support such a noble
cause? f-fod lov^s a cheerful crix-pr i
o
If we have the love of Jesus in our |
hearts we want some one else to |
knov of Him and love Him. Oh! j
that our women, our noble women
would sacrifice their proneness to
folly and fashion, and give more to
the Lord’s cause to bring others into
the glorious light of the gospel.
My friends, we are not walking in the
“straight and narrow way,” when we
lay on the altar of mammon that
which belongs to God. That city is
worth striving for; it has beauties
that eye hath not seen. No earthly
city can compare with its purity.
You may visit any large town and lie
enchanted for awhile, but its impuri
ties will soon be discovered. What
is the cause? I can tell you, it is
sin. But nothing impure can enter
there, I mean the New Jerusalem.
Let us, my friends, lose not a single
opportunity to point some one to the
dear Saviour who taketh away the
sins of the world ; our opportunities
are more precious than diamonds or
rubies or all the precious stones of
earth; so precious that we cannot
find words to express our thoughts on
the subject. One soul is more prec
ious in the sight of God than all this
world, oh, than ten thousand world’s.
There is a great awakening going on
in many cities of the country for the
elevation of those who have sunk so
low in vice and sin. Is it not a start
in the right direction to point some
one. oh, many of those poor creatures
to the New Jerusalem? Let us dig
deep and fathom somebody’s nature
and with the help of God plant the
love of Jesus there. It is so sweet to
tell of Jesus. One lost opportunity
will never come again. It is like a
ripple on the water whose surface is
stirred for a few moments and is soon
gone forever. “The soul uneasy and
confined from home rests and expati
ates in the life to come. Sin is
abroad in our beautiful world, that
our maker intended otherwise, and
let us put on the whole armor of God
and try to get others to join our
band to the celestial city. My sinner
friend, let me warn you as one that
loves your precious immortal soul, to
come to Jesus. Come now and make
no delay, for delay is dangerous.
Too late!-only two words, but what
a terrible significance is contained in
them. We have no to-morrow, but
come while it is to-day. How can
you resist such a loving Saviour,
who is both able and willing to save
you. When your heart responds to
the loving call Jesus enters in and
claims you for his own dear children.
Lovingly, tenderly the Great Shep
herd is calling you home to the New
Jerusalem. And the spirit and the
bride say come, and let him that
heareth say come, and let him that
is athirst come, and whosoever will
let him take the water of life freely.
Yes, sinner, they all want you to
come and drink of the fountain of
everlasting iife. It ia the same Jesus
that wants you to come and the same
water that He spoke of to the woman
of Samaria. He is the only door by
which you can enter in to the celes
tial city. We have so many promises
left of entering into His rest. Let
us not come short of it but strive to
enter in. The gates w : !i- be opened
wide if we iz ire part. Prayer is
one of the gates wo can enter
there and faith the golden key that
fits the lock. Press the key firmly
and the door will open wide to you.
Who will be faithful and true? Oh!
that there were more prayer meetings
in our land; what good might result
from the united prayers of a Christian
people. Let us up and be doing and
drive satan from his stronghold, and
destroyfthe mighty works of darkness.
Our captain is leading on ; the victory
will be ours, blessed be God. He
will lead His children home to that
beautiful city, whose streets are of
pure gold and will never fade away.
But above all the beauties of that
glorious rest, our eyes will behold our
blessed Master and love and adore
and praise Him forever. Amen.
