To the Commander of Camp, Confederate Veterans, General: The Confederate Me morial Literary Society of Rich mond. Virginia, has long been im pressed with the need of perpetuating some more enduring memorial to the individual soldiers and sailors of the Confederacy than that now kept in the hearts of their comrades. As it is impossible for any one As sociation or Society to know the names of more than a small uunber of the heroes who composed our Army, The Confederate Memorial Literary Society has established a Roll of Honor—open to all who loved and followed our Flag. Those who have tBemselves borne the brunt of battle, can best judge of the individual character of that body of men who gloriously yielded up their lives on the fields, in the hospitals, or in prison; and of those others, who, having come out from that dread ordeal, went loftily for ward, and their daily lives have bless ed their country no less than their comrades sanctified her by their death. To this end, each Camp of Confed* erate Veterans is urged to send the name of every man whom bis com rades shall think worthy to be pre served ; that from generation to gen eration their children may point with pride to this record of tbeir match less deeds. The books are now open, and it is earnestly hoped that this appeal will obtain your hearty co-operation. Lamaster, of Pine Grove, was among the prosperous Ch-uokeo planters in the city Friday. Mrs.C. E. Gilbert, formerly of this city but now of Washington, was in the city lust week, the guest of Mrs. W. H. Smith. Misses Lola and Taiuia Davis and Tula Turner, were the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Petty, Just Saturday night and Sunday. Brig. General Thos. Carwile. of the second brigade. United Confed erates Veterans, was in the city a lew hours last Friday. Mayor Wood went to Spartanburg Friday on business. County Treasurer J. B. Jones has been busy collecting taxes the past few weeks. He says the people are paying up rather slow, owing to the low price of cotton. L. M. Price, of Thicketv, was in the city Saturday. Mr. Price added his name to The Ledger’s growing list while in the city. Miss Tula Turner, o' Sharon, N. C., is visiting the Misses D>le, and TaUiia Davis, at Mr. C. C. Scruggs. Dr. J. Iloddy Miller left yesterday for York county, where lie goes to at tend his sick sister. A Child Burned. While piayi’ig around the fire Tuesday the thr j e-ycar-old baby girl of Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Gibson, of Cherokee Falls, Imd the misfortune to be severely burned about the face and body. The little one’s clothes became ignited and before assistant e could be rendered the Hames hsd spread to such an extent *s to reach its face. Dr. Littlejohn was called to attend the little sufferer and at this waiting she is doing very well. — — Dr. Hamrick's Mother Dead. Dr. W. C. Hamrick was culled to Cleveland county Tuesday by a mes sage bearing the sad intelligence of the death of his mother. Mrs. Hamrick was an aged lady who bad lived a life of great usefulness. Dr. Hamrick has the sincerest sympathy of the people o( this entire section in his bereavement. Some Moving. Mr. W. H. Pearson and family are boarding with Mr. and Mrs. John Spake. Rev. C. E. Robertson has moved into the house vacated by Mr. Pearson and Mr. J. T. Brown now oc cupies the house made vacant by the removal of Mr. Robertson. - - — Cotton Market. The Episcopal church waa crowded last Sabbath morning with an audi ence which came away delighted with the magnificent discourse of Bishop Eilersou Capers. The story he told was the oft repeated story of the Man of Galilea, but it was told in such simplicity of language, such gentleness of speech ami tender pathos as to reach thejheart of sinful man. Without apparent effort on the part of the speaker he related the story of tier who had had an issue of bioed for twelve years and having spent much money on physicians without avail sought by faith to touch the hem of the garment of the Great Physician and who because of her faith was made whole, and then he drew a lesson so simple a child might understand and yet so beauti ful that all who listened left the house leeling better for having been there. Gaffney will always welcome Bishop Capers. Sore Throat. In a letter to Dr.J Hartman, dated Dec.27th, Ifcyii, George A. Blanchard, of Was hi n gto n, Gu., writes: My throat had been in the habit of getting sore every year for the last twenty years, and if any medical skill did me any good it was so little I did not know it. Two years ago my wife was down sick two months, tried two doc tors, but the case was a stubborn one of female trouble. Charley Hmith, who was shot by George Byrd last Thursday night a week ago on the public highway near George Elmore’s shop has paid the penalty of his sin and now his mur derer lk-s languishing in the county jail awaiting u trial at the hands of a jury of his countrymen for his aw ful deed. Young Smith died Thurs day morning of his wounds. Coroner McCraw summoned a jury consistingof \V. C. H. Wood, foreman, Joseph Huskey. John Clary. L f. Huskey. Ed Clary. D. E Lemons, W. E. Clary. T. C. Wood, J. M. Swaf ford, J. L. Hopper, M. L Bridges and R. G. Ray. who rendered a verdict to the effect that Charley Hmith came to his death from k pistol shot wound in the hands of George Byrd. The funeral of Charlie iSmith took place Friday. It was largely attend ed by the friends of the family, who have the sincerest sympathy of the people of this community. The Court House Deserted. The court house had a deserted ap pearance Tuesday. Supervisor Lip scomb went to Columbia to attend the fair, Sheriff Ross was in York- ville on business, Auditor Camp was spending the day with relatives in Blacksburg, and Treasurer Jonesjwas waiting on the patriots of Ezell’s. Only Clerk of Court Jefferies and Probate Judge Webster, were on hand to answer questions and wait upon those who had business at the court house. A New Firm. To Benefit Others.
