LIPSCOMB & BRO., The Hustlers A Gun Recovered. Several weeks u^o Bus Mint/ lost * a fine nun by having it stolen from his premises. The gun was recovered Wednesday night of last week at King’s Mountain by a brother of Dr. .1. F. Garrett, Mr. J. II. Garrett, un der very trying circumstances. Mr. Garrett was disturbed in his slum bers by hearing a noise in the kitch en, which adjoined his room. Getting up he went into the kitchen. On en tering he was confrcnted by a man, who stepped to the window and re marked. ‘if you advance I’ll shoot you.” The Intruder then stooped to pick up something, and as ho did so, Mr. Garrett jumped on him. The burglar arose with a gun and a scullle ensued, during which both barrels of the gun were discharged. The bur glar then fled, leaving Mr. Garrett in possession of the gun, which, on ex amination proved to be Mr. Mintz’s gun. The burglar had brought the gun with him and laid it down while he ransacked the room. It is not known whether he was white or black, as it was so dark that Air. Garrett could not distinguish him. Thanksgiving Day. Thursday, November 25th, has been set apart by President McKin ley as a day of Thanksgiving. Of course we ought, at all times, give thanks for the many blessings which we daily receive, but it occurs to us that we have very little to be thank ful for this year so far as the prosper ity of the masses of the people are concerned. We are thankful that we have not been visited by cyclones, wars and pesrilance, and for the many good things the Almighty has given us. but are not thankful to speculators and tricksters for the low prices of farming products. We hope the day wiU be observed in a becoming manner. New Residents. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Ross, formerly of Shelby, have taken up a perma nent residence in this city. Mr. Ross is largely interested in GafTney real estate, and at one time resided here, but for the psst several years lias lived in North Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Ross have a l ost of friends in Gaffney who have welcomed them with open arms and The Ledger trusts they will be so well pleased with their new home that they will never wish to leave u<» They are af. present stopping at the Limestone Inn. Post Office Moved. On last Friday at 9 o’clock, A. M., the post-office at this place was moved to its new quarters in one of the Littlejohn buildings, recently finished on Limestone street. It was done in a few minutes and no one was delayed five minutes in receiving his mail. 'I lie new post office is handsomely and conveniently arranged and is a credit to Gaffney, and to our worthy and efficient postmaster, Mr. T. H. Littlejohn, is the credit and our ob ligations due. Wood, quick to perceive the necessities of our growing Gaffney, is now building a fine two-story brick store-house and office-building, on Frederick street. This building will he up-to-date in every respect, and an ornament to the city. — — Marriages. Married, last Thursday, by Rev. John Ruppe, Eddie McCraw to Miss Lucy Jones, both of Byarsville. Married, on the same day, by same, Oliver Earle to Miss Laura Hum phries—both of Byarsville. - *■- Death of a Good Woman. [Cleveland Star.] Airs. Street Hamrick passed peace fully away Tuesday morning at 11:40 o clock, at her home near Beaver Dam. Mrs. Hamrick had been suf fering for several months with asth ma and heart trouble, but she died of dropsy. Deceased would have been 75 years of age if she had lived until the last day of this month. She was a member of the Baptist church, a Christian woman and a faithful wife and devoted mother. She reared a family of six sons, and they are among the county’s and most substantial citizens, six sons of this noble woman Ex-Sheriff M. N. Hamrick. S, J. C., L. 8. and A. M. Hamrick, of this county, and Dr. W. C. Hamrick, of Gaffney. This is the first death in this family that has occurred for 54 years. I he funeral services were conducted from the residence last Wednesday. (10th, instant.) and the body was laid to rest in the Shelby cemeterv. One of Two Ways.
