The past week has been one fraught
with casualties for the people of this
county. Never before in the history
of this section have so many acci
dents of a similar character occurred
and the subject has been the occasion
of much comment. The unfortunates
1 are not only receiving good attention
but they have the sympathy of a host
of friends in their misfortunes.
On Wednesday of last week, while
returning to the city after viiiting
i Some patients, Dr. M. W. Smith’s
horse became frightened and ran
away, throwing the doctor out. Dr.
Smith’s head struck on a rock and
an ugly and painful wound was the
result. The accident occurred near
Indian Hill. Dr. Smith has been
confined to his home since the acci
dent and will not be able to resume
his practice for some time. Dr. J.
Roddy Miller dressed the wound and
the patient has been doing well.
While endeavoring to control a
team of fractious mules Saturday
morning about 11 o’clock while oth
ers were loading some cotton, Sup
erintendent of Education McArthur
had the misfortune to have his left
leg broken between the knee and
ankle. Mr. McArthur was holding
the utules by the bridle when they
began to jump and plunge and drag
ged him some twenty or thirty feet,
running him into a pile of wood with,
the result above mentioned. Drs.
Miller and Littlejohn attended Mr.
McArthur and set the fractured limb
and at this writing he was resting
very nicely. He will be confined to
the bed for several weeks, during
which time his daughter, Mrs. M. G.
Montgomery, will take his place in
the school.
Saturday afternoon Wm. Young, a
liveryman, went to drive Frank U»*ff
ney to his home on Broad river. He
had two horses hitched to the buggy.
Just before they reached the railroad
crossing near L. R. Ross’ place one of
the bolts which support the tongue
broke. The horses becatne frightened
and ran away, throwing tho occu
pants out. Mr. Gaffney escaped un
hurt but Mr. Young sustained very
painful but not serious injuries. The
horses continued to run until they
reached Cherokee creek bridge when
one fell in the creek and the other
fell on the bridge. In falling the
horse which fell in the creek lacer
ated himself on a spike to such an
extent that he died Monday night.
Tuesday morning, while Mr. Giles
Hill was bringing to town a loud of
cotton he stopped his team on the hill
just above the branch on Frederick
street in order to receive some money
from Mr. Sonny Reynolds. He was
standing on the doubletree of the
wagon and let the lines drop to the
tongue and placed his foot on them
Mr. J. N. Lipscomb ascended the hill
on a bicycle, the team became fright
ened and started to run. Mr. Hill
jumped to the ground and in some
manner his right leg whs terribly
crushed, in fact so much so that Drs.
Miller and Littlejohn, who were sum
moned. found it necessary to ampu
tate it. Opinion varies as to tho
manner in which tho unfortunate
man’s leg was broken but the indica
tions are that the heavily loaded
wagon passed over it. Mr. Hill is one
of our moat worthy citizens and the
misfortune falls more heavily upon
him from the fact that he is a man of
large family.
Mr. Harold Gibson, a venerable cit
izen of the King’s Creek settlement,
arose Saturday morning before day
light and went out into the yard. He
accidentally ran up against a tree and
knocked himself do*/n, falling over a
nearby stump and seriously injured
his back. Mr Gibson is about eighty
years old and his accident may prove
fatal.
Thursday, while working around
the engine of the Limestone dummy
line, Engineer Ferguson, while stoop
ing to pick up a hammer, struck his
face against an injector pipe and
painfully bruised his face and nose.
