Brown, died at her home in this city Tuesday morning at 12:40, after a lingering illness, having been in declining health for several months. Sho was fifty-three yaars old. Deceased was a most estimable woman and had lived a life of useful ness, during which she had reared a family of ten children—five boys and five girls—nine of whom survive her, one hoy, Forest U., haying died at Patric Military Institute in 1882. The end was not unexpected, as Mrs. Brown was a sufferer from heart trouble and had not been in good health since last Christmas. Several weeks ago her malady became so se vere as to necessitate her taking her bed, from which she never recovered. The end came peacefully and quietly and she crossed the great di vide apparently at peace with all mankind. Mrs. Brown was a Miss Bates, daughter of B. F. and Malinda C. Bates, of Rich Hill, both of whom are yet living. She married Major Brown in November, 1804. The union proved a most happy one. At the early age of fourteen Mrs. Brown joined the Cedar Springs Baptist church and has since been identified with that congregation. She has lived a pure, consistent, Christian life, altogether in keeping with her profession. Her husband died eleven selling at Some Short Statements. Ed Humphries opened up a store at Cherokee Falls last week. Cherokee county took a holiday Thursday and nearly everybody came to town to see the circus. Rev. Mr. Anderson will hold ser vices at the Episcopal church next Sunday at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. All are invited. In a letter to a friend of The Ledger, written from Arkansas, the writer says that cotton is cents in that State. We invite the attention of our readers to the large number of legal ads in this week's issue. The Ledger [ is now beginning to look Pke a coun ty seat paper. The dispensary and original pack age stores all closed upon circus day. One could not have told there was a circus in town tf he took the sobriety of the gathering as an evidence. Prof, W. F. Watson, of Furman University, will deliver an X Ray lecture in this city, accompanied by Illustrations, on Oct. 29th at the City Hall, under the auspices of one of the societies of the First Baptist church. A cutting scrape occurred at the railroad camp Sunday afternoon in which Ed Mabrey was artistically carved up by a colored sport whose name we were unable to learn. The carver escaped. Dr. Miller stitched up the carved, assisted by Fitzhugh Hoppe* - . Personal Paragraphs. W. M. Brown, of Ravenna, was a visitor to the city Friday. O. B. Tate, of Lawn, was in the city Saturday. F. G. Bobo, of the Gaffney mill, has accepted the position of the slasher room of the Clinton mills. He and his family moved to Clinton Tuesday. She was kind and gentle and gen erous to a fault and no one who was deserving ever applied to her for as sistance and went away empty handed. The children who servive her are Mrs. J. Brown, of this city. The family have the deepest sympathy , of a host of loving friends. J The funeral services took place yesterday at the First Raptist church i Rev. B. P. Robertson, officiating, as sisted by other ministers of the city. Grover, Oct. 11— Again the earth’s thirst has been quenched by a good rain, which began on Sunday and still continues. The writer learns that just west of here the rain on Sunday was accompanied by con siderable hail, but I suppose it could do very little damage further than knock out a little cotton. Some of our farmers are beginning to gather corn, and as soon as the weather will permit they will go at it in earnest. Cupid has again been In our midst and as a result Mr. M. R. Hart ness and Miss R. H. Rumfelt were made one at Antioch on the 28th inst., by Rev. T. H. Mullinax. Mr. Hartness is the popular miller at the Grover Roller Mill, and Miss Rumfelt is the accomplished daughter of our popu lar saw mill man. The happy couple have our hearty congratulations. May they live long and be a power for good in the community. On the same date Mr. J. E. Biggers and Miss A. L. White was married by Rev. T. H. Mullinax. Mr. W. H. Bird is now building a now house. I am sorry to note that two. of our young men have gone to Chester. S. C. to engage in the damnable original package business. Rev. J. D. Bailey preached a very able and eloquent sermon at Antioch on Sunday on the effects of strong drink and I would to God that every whiskey drinker in Cherokee county could have heard and heeded its warning. It was unanimously voted by the church at Antioch on Sunday to withdraw their letter from the York Association and unite with the Broad River, their alma mater, in which they shone as one of the brightest stars during the first half century of its existence. I learn that other churches on this side of the river will follow suit. Cowpens, Oct. 11.—We are having some rain after a very son. The school trustees held a meeting at Mountain View school house last Saturday and elected Gun Martin, of Cowpens, teacher. We wish him success with his school. Richmond Stacy is all smiles these days. It’s a hoy. Lightnit g struck a tree between the plantation of R. C. Thompson and Cowpens and tore it up. J. R. Hughey was about; two hundred yards distant but escaped unhurt. John Terrill Wilkins had the mis fortune to loose his barn by lire caused from lightning lost Sunday night. Gil Fetchet. — - —• Cherokee Chat. (Correspondence of The Ledger.) Cherokee Falls. Oct. 11.—We have had three weddings recently which have not been reported. On Sept. 19th, Mr. Chas. Hale and Miss Alice Rolan were united in the presence of almost every inhabitant of Cherokee Falls. On Sept. 24th, Mr. R. W. Gordon and Miss Ada Pennington were made one. On Sept. 80th, Mr. William Peeler, boss spinner, and Miss Minnie Green were united. R. F. Gibson, notary public, offici ated at all three of the marriages.
