Gastonia Mills.
The smoko curling towards the sky
from every quarter, the constant hum
of the spindles, by day and by night,
tell of the advancement being made
in the cotton mill industry by the
town of Gastonia, X. C. There are
4 cotton mills within the incorporate
limits, the carding and spinning in
each day and night.
The imposing two story mill build
ing, 75x1100 feet, of the Avon cotton
mill is handsomely equipped with the
lulest improved machinery. They
have 2 >0 Whitin looms, .'»,oOll spin
dles, Whitin frames, Whitin cards
and drawing frames, Woonsocket
clubbers and speeders, xnd Howard &
Buliough lappers in the carding de
part mont. There is plenty of floor
space to aceiynmodute additional ma
chinery to double the present ca
pacity of the plant. This mill is
making ’.Oineh plain white goods,
50x88, aii of which they ship to
bleucheries. George Gray is super
intendent. The overseers of the dif
ferent rooms are: Charles WvckofT,
overseer of weaving; Charles Bunn,
spinner and carder in the day, and

Archibald Forbes, tho famons war
correspondent, once told nu amusing
story connected with a lecture which he
delivered at West Chester, Pa. On ar
riving at the station in that place a ne
gro hackman pressed forward and offer
ed bis services to take the lecturer to
the hotel. On arriving at his destina
tion Mr. Forbes ' asked tho buckman
v.bat hii fare was.
“Well, sah,” replied the negro,.with
a comprehensive grin, “if you’d jess
gib me a tiiket to do lecture, sail, dat's
all I ask, And I’d bo right glad to get
it.”
“ Why, certainly, ” replied Mr. Forbes,
feeling that here indeed was aa u.e x-
pocte.d tribute. “I’ll give you one. And
haven't you a mij-si^r”
“Yes, nah,” van tho prompt reply.
“I’ze pot a missis.”
“Well, yon shall have one for her,
too,” said the lecturer, who forthwith
requested his sgrnt to hand the man
the tickets. That evening he looked
a bent tho hall for his colored adwirbr,
but saw nothing of him. Tho next
morning, on ordering a l ack to go to the
station, ho discovered that tho vehicle
was driven by the same man.
“I didn’t see you at the lecture last
night,” said Mr. Forbes.
“Nc, sab, ” replied tbo darky frank
ly ; “I was not dar. ”
“But I gave you tickets for yourself
and yonrvife,” said Mr. FcrbcS in
natural astonishment.
“Yes, sab,” returned the hncknart,
with one of bis broadest smiles; "but,
you see, mo and my missis don’t know
much about lecture-', sab, -and wo
thought, wo’d rather hub dn cash, so 1
done wdd di*ui tickets fbr $1, tab. ”—

The Columbia Negro Mill.
W. 8. Montlcth, who is arranging
I to build the cotton mill at Columbia,
8. C., to employ exclusively negroes,
says the mill will contain 10,0(0
spindles and 250 looms. \ repre
sentative of a Northern cotton ma
chinery company, he says has been
there and lias contracted to furnish
all the machinery complete. Elec
tric power will bo used arid negotia
tions are now pending fur the power.
Mr. Monteith states that the mill
will employ about <>00 persons, run-

State Line, Oct. 11.—The rain
that fell yesterday and last night has
cooled tlie air and settled the dust.
A mad dog passed through this
settlement last Friday. No one was
bitten, but some were almost seared
out of their w its. The dog was pelted
to death with stones near Air. James
^cCravis.
Misses Lola and Talula Davis, after
being absent for a month, spent a
couple of nights at their home. They
also took in tlie camp meeting at
Rock Spring las! Sunday.
Miss Tula Turner and brother,
John Weaver, of Sharon, and C.
Scruggs ail spent the night at Airs.
Davis' last Saturday night.
The farmers are all rushing to get
out their cotton so they can sow
oats.
The good people of this vicinity
are expecting a good time at the
Sunday School Institute at State
Line, beginning on Friday the 29th
inst., and continuing until Sunday.
Mr. Kinnie Davis has sold his old
home to Mr Leonard Jolly, of Boiling
Springs. Welcome to the mother
and son. Sal Joe.
