Slice Statements. (Correspondence of The Ledger.) Stick, Sept. 27.—Capt. 8. D. Ran dall is doing some good work in the way of ginning. The cotton crops is about ono-half and the price below zero. The corn crop is very good- The turnip crop is a failure. I have a nice patch but they are not as large as water buckets. Do not under stand me to say they are. Mrs. DeCamp. Mrs. Biggerstnff and Miss Willie DeCamp dined with the Old Man not long since. Call again and bring the editor. Miss Ivia Ellis, aged ten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ellis, is the champion cotton picker. She picked 1)8lbs. in five hours. I’rof. W. I). Hopper is now attend ing the association at New Hope Baptist church. He is singing clerk. Billie* can get there every time. Ora Ellis is a candidate for matri mony. Randall left these parts for Atlanta a few days ago. where he will join his brother, L. Y. Randall, in the machinery business. N.X. Thomason, of our burg, is doing a thriving business in the way of selling goods. Old Man. - - A Meeting of Baptist Churches. There will be a meeting of all the Baptist of the First and Second Bap tist churches and of Limestone and 1'rovidence churches at Limestone on 1st Sunday in October. The soft, flue white flour will not give as large an amount of muscle, bone or nerve making food as the whole wheat flour, which constitutes in itself a complete life sustainer. In selecting flour choose that which is dark in color and free from bran. The best bread flours in the market are of a yellowish white tinge, rather granulated, and do not easily pack. They make a strong and elastic dough. Though not whole wheat flours they are decidedly the best of the white brands. After selecting the flour the next important thing is to have a good, strong, sweet and pure yeast. The compressed cakes are good and convenient and will do the work much more quickly than ten times the amount of homemade or baker's yeast. When setting bread to rise, stand your bread pan in another of warm water. Cover the two so that the moisture will pass over the top of the dough at an even temperature of 75 degrees F.— Mrs. S. T. Rorer in Ladies’ Home Jour nal. The Hair In Warm Weather. The hair should receive special care during the warm months. Wash in pure water with white castilo soap, rinsing thoroughly and drying and fan ning the tresses in the sun and fresh air. At night take the hair down from its coils, curls and plaits, brush it out for 10 cr 15 minutes until it is thor oughly aired and then plait loosely. The head perspires freely in summer, and unless frequently washed and sham pooed the hair will get a sour, disagree able odor. Women who have a fancy for perfumed tresses can buy small, fiat silk sachets, which are to be slipped under the pillow ease and slept ou. Sandalwood hairpins and small combs will soon impart a perfume to the hair. Salt water makes straight hair rough and brittle and takes all the wave out of curly locks. One should wear a close fitting oiled silk cap when one takes a dip in the surf. A Curious Island. One of the most curious islands in the world is Merken, in the Zuyder Zee. Horses and trees are things unknown to the natives, us also is drunkenness. Freeman, the polithed and nffiable postmaster of our sister city. Mr Freeman is not only polite and ac commodating but has shown a spirit of enterprise and push that is seldom found in a city of this size. The new post office which he has just com pleted at his own expense is a model of beauty and convenience, and Blacksburg can now boast of as pretty and as nice a post office as almost any town in the State. The furniture is of antique cuk, with combination lock boxes. Mr. Freeman was born in Georgia. He went to Blacksburg several years ago, and has not only shown his spirit of enterprise in this particular case but has been connected with many of the improvements heretofore made in the city. Geo. Guivan. Among the new r/sidents of Blacks burg is George Guivan, who repre- Bints the Hydraulic Reduction and Mining Company. This concern are opaiat'ng extensive gold mines six miles below Blacksburg in Cherokee < ounty. Mr. Guivan hails from New York City and is very enthasiastic concerning the posibilities of the mining business in this section. —- ■ A Good Plan to Adopt Here.
