We have received a communication from a friend in North Carolina in which he seeks to defend himself against the attacks of some so-called neigobois. We have a high personal regard for the writer but submit that the matter to which he alludes is not of interest to the public—especially that portion of it who read this paper —therefore we decline to publish it. A newspaper is not the proper ml through which to air personal grievances. Its mission is to publish the news and not to publish the de tails of po ly neighborhood quarrels. We &II have our ups and downs—our seasons of prosperity and adversity —and it is not the part of a noble man to give vent to his spleen on oc casions of this character. Some times the way seems dark and dreary to us, but it is only for a moment, for we instinctively remember that there is a bright and a dark side to all things in life and we try to hunt the bright side and push thedaik side out of sight and out of reach. No, brother, if your neighbor bears false witness against thee do not rush into the newspaper about it. Strive to I’ve above such meanness. En deavor to build a character so high and so noble that no one would be lieve an evil report no matter who might circ ulate it. The only way to do that it to commune cu such oc casions with the unseen Father. We believe that the good people of the State, irrespective of faction, would welcome an act of the legisla ture making it a crime to establish or conduct a ‘ bucket shop” in South Carolina. Five men were lynched there in u bunch for “robbery” two days ago.—News and Courier. * * * A great many people, lately, are getting down olf the political fence. And proud is the man who can look around him at this juncture and say that he has never been on the fence. Ben Tillman’s coat tail has entirely given away, and his anatomy is sadly exposed. We hope that many peopne now will contract the habit of staying on the ground. Fence riding con tributes neither to health, happiness nor honor.—Edgefield Chronk-1 *. * * * Under Judge Simonton’s decision a man from Georgia can come into this state and sell whiskey in original packages without paying any license, lie cannot sell whiskey in Georgia without paying a license but he can come across the Savannah into South Carolina and Judge Simonton pro tects him in the free sale of whiskey giving him a hotter chance than he would have in any other State of the Union, for the sale of whiskey is un der the ban everywhere except the territory of our State covered by the Simonton decision.—Abbeville Me dium. — -#•*- - Promotions at Clifton No. 2. No man is genuine, Hays Woodrow Wilsou in The Atlantic, who is forever trying to pattern his life r.ft» r the lives of other people, unless, indeed, he be it genuine dolt. But individuality is by no means tho same as genuiueuess, for individuality may be associated with the most extreme and oven ridiculous eccentricity, while genuineness we con ceive to bo always wholesome, balanced and touched with dignity. It is a quali ty that goes with good sense and self re spect. It is a sort of robust moral sanity, mixed of elements both moral and in tellectual. It is found in natures too strong to bo mere trimmers and con- formers, too well poised and thought ful to fling off into Intemperate protest and revolt. Laughter is genuine which hno in it neither the shrill, hysterical note of mere excitement nor the hard metallic twang of tho cynic’s sneer, which rings i.i ire honest voice of gra cious good .minor, which is innocent and unsntiricnl. Speech is genuine which is without sillineau, affectation or pretense. That character is genuine which seems built by nature rather than by convention, which is stuff of inde pendence r.nd of good courage. Nothing spurious, bastard, begotten out of true wedlock of Ibo mind, noth ing adulterated and seeming to be what it is not, nothing unreal can ever get place among the nobility of things gen uine, natural, of pnre stock and unmis takable lineage. It is a prerogative of every truly human being to oome out from the low estate of those who are merely gregarious and of the herd and show his innate powers cultivated and yet unspoiled — sound, unmixed, free from imitation, showing that individ ualization without extravagance, which is genuineness. Referred to the Grand Jury. Blacksburg, Sept. 20. — Editor Lkdger : Alexander Martin was ar rested on a warrant issued by A. M. Bridges, magistrate nf Cherokee township, Cherokee county, charging said Martin with violation of the election laws. A preliminary hear ing was had before magistral o Bridges and Martin was bound over lo stand his trial at the June term of the Court of Sessions for Cherokee county. The magistrate bound over the following named witnesses for the State and no others: W. C. Wisher, Robt. Moss, Green Moss, E. R. Sapoch and Wm. Caldwell. An indictment was given out by the Solicitor and the above named wit nesses appear on the back of tho in dictment. In addition to this, the names of Robt. Gibson, Hurrcl Gib son and other witnesses for the de fence also appear on the indictment. The witnesses for the defence, with those for the State, were sworn by the Solicitor, and all, with the de fendant, sent to the grand jury. The Solicitor was told by myself and the magistrate that certain witnesses that ho had sworn, were for the de fence and this before they had gone before the grand jury. What I wish to know' is, who gave the names of the defendant’s witnesses to the so licitor; why he placed these names on the back of the indictment and why he sent them to the grand jury, after being told by myself and the magistrate that, they were the defen dant’s witnesses? This is a novel practice in the new county, letting the defendant and the defendant’s witnesses go before the grand jury, having a trial there and a verdict of not guilty in consequence. I re spectfully refer those who may be disposed to investigate this matter further, to examine the records in the clerk’s office at Gaffney ami con fer with the grand jury of the county. Wm.
