Carried His Spittoon in His Pocket.
It is against the rules to spit on
the floor of the court house and a
number of notices to that effect are ]
posted in diflt rent parts of the build
ing. Notwithstanding that offenders :
are liable to a fine of $.'» uu many are '
guilty of the offense. However, if j
all were as thoughtful as was an at- j
tendant last week the floor and walls
would not look so muen like a hog
pen. This genious to whom we al-1
lude carried his spittoon in his pock
et. It consisted of a small paper
bag and during court he sat and
chewed tobacco and spit in his paper
spittoon and as he was leaving tiie
building threw ttie spittoon with its
contents out of the window.

county make the following present
ment :
We have carefully examined tin-
county ollices and lind them neatly
and well furnished.
' We lind the books of the various
! county officers well kept and the
I officers kind and courteous.
We again call the attention of the
County Commissioners to the imme
diate need of a jail. The present ac
commodation is inefficient, insecure
and should not be tolerated by a re
spectable people. We reccommetid
that they will take such steps as to
relieve us of this disgrace.
Many people in the county tire
charged with fornication and adultry,
| and wc* ask tlie different ma^i Urates
to have them arrested and bound
over to trial. The names of some of
the parties charged with tiiese offen
ces will be handed to the solicitor.
We recommend the county com
missioners purchase the necessary
chairs for tlie comfort of the jurors
and court.
We find that I. G. Surratt, magis
trate at Gaffney, on or about the ioth |
of June, 1897, imposed u fine of ten]
dollars on one Z. B. Sumner and took
a chattel mortgage for the same !
which lie afterwards collected and
has failed to enter upon the docket,
either the case or the collection of
the same, nor has it been paid to the
county.
We thank the presiding judge and
the solicitor for their uniform kind

court.
