Carpenter and children returned to the city lust week after a sojourn of two months in the moun tains. The mountain breeze seems to have agreed with them. J. 8. Gibbons and son, Thos. J., of Cherokee Township No. 1, were in the city several days this week. This was the young man’s first, visit to the capital of Cherokee, and he was delighted with it. Mr. Gibbons is one of The Ledger’s best friends on the other side of the river. Manager Eison. of the Company store returned from New York and other Northern markets lust week. J. I). Fowler, of Goucher, paid The Ledger a pleasant call Satur day. Misses Jessie and Isa Thomas, of Greenville, are in the city, visiting Miss Ethel Mack. Miss Carrie Yassey, of Thickety, visited Miss Minnie Robbs, of this city, last w T eek. M. C. The most re8**rcho entertainment of the season wus a Bal masque at the residence <>f Mr. and' Mrs. K. S Lipscomb on Friday night last. The entertainment was largely en joyed by a of those who attended and will be long remembered by those who were so fortunate as to be pres ent. Among the young ladies present T-CL* were Misses Armie, Ida and Lillian Wood. Miss McLendon the Misses Huppv-rs, Miss Sallie Jefferies Misses Ida and Mabel Fort, Miss Ross, Miss Surratt, Miss Alexander, Miss Juliet Lipscomb, and tin* Misses Littlejohns. Among the gentlemen were Messrs Oliver Surratt, Farrow, diaries Lip scomb, W. L. Aileii, 0. A. Wood, I). Smith, Tom Brown, Lucian Hopper, Arthur Pridmore. Eh. Jefferies. Tom Ciarkson, Julian and Robert Lip scomb, Joe McArthur ai d Wardlaw Moorman. Capt. J. B. Court was to have convened here Monday and everything was in readi ness but Judire Bennett, who was to preside, failed to put in an appear ance. A telegram was sent to him and he airived on the vestibule Tues day night, and opened court yesterday morning. 'The Judge rendered as an excuse thu the had been missinformed as to the time and also that he had a sick wife at home. Ledger the past few week’s. The county commissioners met Tuesday and remained in session un til yesterday evening. The proceed ings will he published next week. A great many of Cherokee’s best citizens have been to Gaffney this week. It would take a paper twice the size of The Ledger to mention all of them. We are glad to see our old friend, Mr. B. K. Holmes, out on the streets again after a severe attack of la grippe. Mr. Holmes is sixty-two but is a very energetic man for that age. In a personal letter to the editor our friend Chas. Petty, writing from Augusta, says: “It is awful hot j down here; crops are good in Georgia and cotton is coining in freely; we are beginning to get busy. The Fourth Quarterly Conference for thecurrent year for Gaffney sta tion will be held Thursday night Sept. 10th. Tlie members of thecon- ference will please bear this in mind and get reports in shape. Atnos Ash and Sophia Dawkins, colored couple were united in mar riage by Clerk of Court Jefferies at 7a. m. Sunday morning. The guests of Mr. and Mrs. 11. S. Lipscomb were the witnesses. Thegunsand uniforms oftheGaff- ney Light Infantry have arrived and there will lie a meeting Tuesday night to assign the same to the members. This will be an important meeting and ali members are requested to be pres ent. Prof. S. A. Chambers proposes ad ding a lyceum to the Gaffney High School. He has made a number of changes in the school and the in creased patronage is the best evi dence of the appreciation in which the people hold him. Prof. R. C. Sarrat is conducting a large and successful school in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood. He has fifty-six scholars enrolled. Prof. Sarratt is one of the best educators in upper South Carolina and de serves the success which he has won. A movement is on foot to builb a bridge across Broad river at Buck Shoals. This would be a great con venience to the people who travel that road and would be a paying i investment. W. C. S. ' as middling and brought 7 j cents. 1 Judson and Anthony Sarratt, two of Gaffney,s bright young men left Tuesday for Clemson college. J ud son expects to graduate this session and if hard work and strict attention to studies will avail we fell as if he will accomplish his purpose. This is Anthony’s lirst term at Clemson. , J. B. Atkinson, of Chester, a grad uate of Furman University and the South Carolina College law school, has decided to locate at Gaffney for the practice of his profession. Mr. Atkinson will he associated with at- i torney General Barber. He is a bright young man, full of energy and | pluck and we predict for him the success which attends constant study. C. C. eitacy left Tuesday for Clem son college. He wanted to keep up with the doing of the folks around home so he ordered The Ledger to follow him. D. P. Hughes, formerly with the store of the Gaffney Mfg Co., but now of Grover, N. C., was in the city Tuesday on business. Mrs. Louise DeCamp and daughter, Willie, have been visiting in North Carolina. C. T. Price and wife, of Greenville, were in the city Friday and Satur day. Mrs. W. H. Gooding and little daughter, Helen, have returned to the city after an extended visit to the Queen City. Mr. and Mrs. J. Landrum Brown, of the Queen City, are the guests of Mrs. E. A. Brown on Limestone ave nue. They return to Charlotte to day. W. F. Humphries and E. C. Byars are spending a couple of weeks at Love Spring. Mrs. J. J. Bridges and Miss Effie Hopper are spending a few days at Love Springs. J. 11. McKissiek, Clerk of Court of Union, was in the city several days this week, on a visit. He was the guest of Clerk of the Court J. Eb. Jef feries.
