The Work Accomplished by the teach
er’s Last Week.
The first educational institute held
in Cherokee county watt in session
hero last week, under the direction
of Superintendent E. L. llusihes, of
Greenville, assisted by Mr. O. IJ.
Martin, of Greenville, and Miss Ma
mie Wicklilf, of Winthrop College.
It proved a success in interesting
and stimulating the teachers in at
tendance. The work of the instruc
tors h is been suggestive, inspiring
and helpful. Mr. Martin’s work was
with the subjects of history, lan
guage and geometrical drawing, and
he gave valuable teaching points in
all three. Miss Wicklilf is thor
oughly skilled in primary methods,
especially in the theory and practi
cal teaching of phonetics in reading
and spelling. She is bright, quick,
and attractive in her manner of pre
senting her work, and makes a favor
able impression on ail who hear her.
Superintendent Hughes gives practi
cal and interesting lessons on condi
tions, principles, aims, aids, and
methods of education, school man
agement, professional work of teach
ers, etc. The daily sessions were full
of life and iuter<->t, drill lessons in
singing, word study, physical exer
cises, drawing, writing, etc., being
interspersed with the lectures.
The night exercises were well
attended and the audience of teach
ers and citizens much pleased with
them. On Monday night Superin
tendent Hughes spoke to the people
of the Gaffney Manufacturing Com
pany’s village, on the ‘Home. th«-
School, and the Workshop,” and
showed the intimate relation between
happy homes, efficient labor and ed
ucation. On Tuesday night he lec
tured to a large audience at the Sem
inary, where the sessions of the in
stitute are held on “What the man in
the moon saw.” This was a unique
and enjoyable lecture with plenty of
humor mixed with some pungent
points of seriousness. Thursday
night Hr. E. S. Joyncs, of Columbia,
gave one of bis polished and forciful
lectures to the largest audience of
the week. His subject was “The
Old and the New.” He spoke of the
value of institutes; reverted to the
old time school; contrasted the old
with the new; reviewed the points of
weakness or strength, and the signs
of hope in the present educational
status, and closed with the prophecy
of a bright day. Friday night the in
stitute closed with an interesting
program, consisting of recitations by
Misses Littlejohn and Morgan, and
Mr. Martin, guitar solo, by Miss
Sloan, piano solo, by Miss McArthur,
chalk talk, by Sup’t Hughes, vocal
solos and duet, by Mrs. Fay Gaffney,
and Mrs. Luney, violin solo, by Miss
Hose Johnson, with Prof. Johnson,
accompanist A brass quartette from
the Gaffney band, in charge of Caps.
Cutting, superintendent of the Gaff
ney Mill, added to the enjoyment of
the night exercises also,’ and the
vocal quartette consisting of Messrs.
Dupre and J.’ scornb, Mrs. Laney
anti Miss Gaff. with Prof. John
son at the piano, rendered some de
lightfully artistic music.
Profs. Griffith and Mack, of Coop
er-Limestone. Prof. Sams, formerly
of the Seminary, Prof. Hall, who is
to be associated with superintendent
McArthur in the Seminary, and Prof.
Chambers, of N. C., athorough schol
ar and up-to-date teacher, who has
recently become a citizen of Gaffney
and D in charge of the Gaffney High
school, were interested visitors and
attendants during the week.
On the whole, County Superintend-
entMcArthur expressed himself us
much pleased with his first institute,
and is already planning to make the
next one a greater success.

On next Wednesday the session of
IS'.iJ-S of the Gaffney Seminary will
commence. Prof. McArthur has as
sociated with him for the coming
session Prof. W. S. Hal), A. M., and
other teachers of ability. The out
look for a successful session is very
promising.
Prof. S. A. Chambers will open the
Gaffney High School on August ‘J.'lrd,
next Monday. This is the institu
tion Prof. It. C. Surratt lias eo suc
cessfully conducteu for some years
past. Prof. Chambers comes here
from Brevard, X. C., where he has
been teaching for a term of years.
He has had the school building neatly
fitted up and improved and old
scholars will hardly know the place.
The indications are that the coming
session will be the most successful in
the history of the school. Prof.
Chambers will be assisted by Mrs.
Chambers, who will conduct u couple
of kindergarten classes and Miss Kvu
Sams, who will teach in the higher
grades.

A Fishing Party.
Guile a number of our young peo
ple left Tuesday for Mercer, where
they go to enjoy a fishing party on
Broad river. The young ladies from
Gaffney are Misses Inez and Eunice
Sarratt, Agnes and lone Littlejohn,
Elize Lynch. Fanney and Mable Fort,
end Ida and Lillian Wood. Miss
Inez Sarratt is chaperon, and Col,
Sam Jefferies is “boss,” so we know
it will be a success.

William Northey Dead
William X'orthey died at his home
on Lem Ross’ place Tuesday morn
ing about 9 o’clock of catarrh of the
head. Mr. X'orthey was a most ex
emplary young man and many were
the regrets expressed by acquaintan
ces upon being made acquainted with
the fact of his death.
Mr. X'orthey was thirty-seven
years of age. He leaves a wife and
three children to mourn their loss.
Deceased was a man of noble in
stincts and although he had not ac-|
cumulated any of this world’s goods
lie was always regarded as what is
:enned as a good liver. He possesed
a geniui. sunshiny nature and his
presence will be missed by t ho com
munity as well as by his household.
Enterment took place at Providence
hurrying ground yesterday.
Deceased was abrother to Messrs.
Sandow and Alex. X'orthey.
