tion of Etna in and during several
months aiterward, the oscillations of
level were extremely irregular. Of I.U
earthquakes, ‘21 caused sudden changes
in the height of the water during 24
hours; 15 less marked oscillations also
corresponded to notable oscillations of
the tronolneter. I’rof. King, in the
I’nited States, lias madeobservatiims of
the same nature in Wisconsin. There
the oscillations were due not to natural
movements of the ground, hut to its
disturbance by heavily loaded trains
passing within about 50 yards of the
well. Cnder these circumstances the
water rose invariably sometimes by a
quarter of a centimeter (about one-
tenth of an inch), hut it resumed its
former level after n few seconds.

Wonderful Electric Motor.
J. A. Reynolds, now of Greenwood,
S. (’.. but a native Georgian, was in
Augusta, Gn., on Tuesday, snys the
Tribune.
Mr. Reynolds is an electrician who
has traveled the I’nited States over
and bus spent bis life as an electri
cian. Coupled with this he is a ge
nius and has invented, and a patent
is now pending for same, an electric
motor generator.
He is in Augusta looking for a
place to put same on exhibition and
with a view of locating.
This generator the gentleman
claims will take I horse power and
you cun so generate it that you get
a whole horse power from it.
’I he next few days will develop his
scheme fully. It is understood if
his scheme bn put in practice, he
will establish a factory to manufac
ture horseless carriages.
By his motor generator he can have
a charged battery amounting to but
very little, arranged in the buggy,
and generate enough electricity to
propel a vehicle with all ease.
Mr. Reynolds has made a success
ful trip in a horseless carriage with
one of his motors and has great faith
in his works.

seen by a reporter yesterday. When
asked us to when he would go to
Laurens, he replied that he had no
idea of removing from GatTnoy Court
House, and that The Herald’s imfor-
mant was somewhat mistaken.
“Why.” said he, ”1 live in the ban
ner county of the State, tho home of
my nativity and a thriving city
whose resources and advantages are
seldom eqtralled, much less excelled.
I have travelled u'l over the Union
and there is but one section of coun
try that can in the least be compared
with Cherokee county, and that is
California, and really, between the
two, I would take Cherokee county.”
“And again,” he continued, “do you
suppose, young man, that I would
leave the linest county in the South
and passthrough Spartanburg county
which ranks next, to go to Laurens?”
As the reporter smiled, he said:
“Now, don’t understand me as saying
anything disparagingly of Laurens:
for she is all right every way; but
whut I mean to say, is that 1 am
now in the first little city in America,
and there I mean to stay.” And “J.
D.” meant every word of it.

Convict Hosiery.
The cotton hosiery manufactured
hy the convicts of South Carolina
(mostly negroes) in the penitentiary
at Columbia, would meet with diffi
cult sale, were not a successful
method used to get around it. Many
of the ditTi rent stales have restricted
laws concerniniMhe stile of convict

place, mainly devoted however, to
the manufacture of wool and merino

South Carolina convict factory is
