Griffith de scribes so graphically. Urr's rifles and the 14th, S. C. V. belonged to McGowan’s brigade, and from Gaines' mill lo Appomattox court-house they were side by “idu it. nearly all of the great battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia. In the buttle of Cimncbllorsville a Zouave made a desperate attempt to capture a new flag which was carried by Orr’s rules. When I was shot I was but a few feet from the (lag. The stnlT was shot in two, the tlug was piefeed by twenty-eight bullets and torn by two pieces of shell. Seventeen men were shot down just around it, resisting its capture. A sergeant of the Zou aves once had bis hands on the stud but was shot, down by private Krskino Sharp, of Company G, who immedi ately laid bis gun down to examine the pockets of the Zouave. In one he found u memorandum book partly lilled with original poetry, and pencil landscape sketches. One sketch was of Fredericksburg and was true to nature. While engaged in this search Sharp w’as shot in the knee and was compelled to leave in the field. I was surprised that Capt. Griffith, in his article made no mention of the multitude of whip-poor-wills, that kept us awake during the night of the second of May. There must have been a million, or at least one for every tree in the Wilderness. I agree with Capt. Griffith in what he lias to say about A. P. Hill, vho was always •‘present for duty." The last words of Stonewall Jackson v.ere: “Tell A. P. Hill to prepare for action.” The last words of Gen. li. E. Lee were: “Tell Hill he must come up.” About two years ago at a reunion at ( rang*, Va., Col. W. W. Scott rend a few lines of poetry which should bo preserved, and therefore J ttsk you to print them so they may be seen by Capt. Griffith and other survivors of Hill’s corps who read your paper. Dellinger was in the city last Thursday and informed The Ledger that a Mr. Curtia 'had on foot a scheme to build a bride across Broad River at a point above EUis’ Ferry to connect with the main road running from Gaffney to Shelby. This will be a good thing for the people and if the peoplfl of this section were possessed of as much public spirit us Mr. Deliir.ger there would be no question about a bridge being built. Mr. Dellinger owns n ferry but he says it’s too mu;h to compel travellers to pay ferryuge, and he is willing to sacrifice what lie makes out of the ferry for a free bridge and to help build it too, for that matter. — •- — Killed the Hog. Mrs. Jerry Bryant lias on her prem ises a hog pen in which she kept two lings. She also lias a cow stall and a stable for a mule. They are loca ted iti close proximity to each other. During the electric storm Monday a bolt of electricity struck oho of thy hogs and killed it. The other hug ei'up.d without Injury hut th<* cow and mule were both stunned by the stroke. This was the only dutnage reported from the J-torm. A Good Sized Mortgage. <‘n Monday the O. R. it C. Rail road C» mpany iiled with the Clerk of Court of Cherokee a mortgage for $000,000 in favor of the Finance Com pany of Pennsylvania. The docu ment consisted of twenty-nine pages. It is the largest mortgage yet filed in this county and will probably remain so for some time.
