The Southern is ballasting its track with broken granite, which gives it asubawiutial and neat appearance. At the Methodist church next Sun day there will be sevices by the pas tor at J1 a. m.. and 8:d<) p. m. The public is cordially invited to attend. Near three hundred men are at wo 1 " 1 , on the new railroad now being bui. from Blacksburg to Gaffney. The O. It. andC. people are bust ling. The parsonage of the first Baptist church is now complete and occupied by the pastor. It is a handsome building, an ornament to the city and a credit to our Baptist brethren. Regu ir services will be held at the First Baptist church next Sabbath by the p istor, Rev. B. P. Robertson, both morning and evening. A cor dial invitation is extended to all. There is a mighty good opening in Gaffney for some live man who will engage in and push the marble and granite business. Think of the money that this section sends abroad for gravestones. Salesday in Ch.erokee lias not yet attained the importance attached to it in the old counties. People do not come to town iu*t because it is sales day. Besides the sales have been small in Cherokee. Arthur Culvo, of Columbia, st opped over a few days in the city last week on his way home from Baltimore, where he lias been working for some time past. Misses Ray Macomson and Grace Montgomery of Mercer was over visi ting friends in the city last week. Franklin Petty, of Cowpens. was among the welcome visitors at this office Monday. He was accompanied by his venerable friend, P. L. Plyler, who lives just a few miles Northeast of the city. Mr. and Mrs. J. Landrum Brown, of the Queen City, are the guests of Mr. Brown’s mother. Mrs. A. E. Brown, on Limestone street. Mrs. Fieda Tarver, nee Anthony, is spending some time with her parents, just below the city. Miss Lucy Thompson, of Blacks burg, spent several days in the city last week as the guest of Sheriff and Mrs. J. B. Ross. \\ r . 8. Winfree, of Spartanburg, was in the city last Monday. Miss May Harris, who has been visiting friends at Spartanburg, re turned to the city Monday. Revs. J. L. Smith and A. D. David son were callers at this office yester day. These gentlemen have been holding several very successful meet ings in this section and Mr. Smith was on his way to Spartanburg. This was his first visit to Gaffney and he expressed himself as being favorably impressed with the town. G. O. Doggett, of Charlotte, was in the city last Friday visiting his brother, A. W. Doggett, on depot street. Cluff Robison, of Chester, spent several days in the city the past week. Ralph Webb and Miss Sue Brevard, of Shelby, N. C., spent Sunday in the city. Miss Lillian Reeves, of Charlotte, is the guest of her aunt, Mrs. G. B. Colvin, of tiiis city. A. C. Painter, of Maud, was in the city Friday. President and Mrs. J. R. Mack and their children returned to the city this week after spending some time with friends in Aiken. President Mack in the mean time taking in several places in the interest of Cooper Limestone Institute. The president is well pleased with the prospect of the Institute for the coming session. M. G. Montgomery returned to the city Sunday uf a week’s stay at Spar tanburg and other points. Dr. W. A. Thompson, a prominent physician and planter, of Halls Cross Roads, Lincoln county, N. C., accom panied by his g’T.r: Don Krnstus Dixon, paid a visit to his nephew t;**v. W. Y. Thompson on Victoria Avenu last Monday. The senatorial campaign meeting ' held in the t’onr! House in t! i-' city i last Thursday was largely attended. I the atidien.* • b. mg composed prin- 1 ipuliy of the thrifty’ planters of the j county. The order maintained was superb and there was not the lea-i unfriendly demonstrations towards anyone. Chairman Junius Thomp son presided in a most acceptable manner. Fix-Senator J. L. M. Irby opened the bull. He spoke for about half an hour, during which time lie received very good attention. At the close he was applauded. Ex-Govenor John Gary Ivvans fol lowed. He made a much better speech than Col. Irby. At the close he received liberal applause. Senator John L. McLaurin fol lowed Mr. Evans. He was greeted with applause ns he stepped to the front of the stage and for thirty or forty minutes held the close atten tion of the audienc.. His speech was a masterly defense of his tariff views. At the close of his speech about one half of the audience arose and left the hall, as it was then pass the dinner hour. Mr. Mayfield spoke for about twenty minutes to the remainder of the au dience. He was given good attention. At the close of the speaking chair man Thompson announced thet Mr. Duncan and Whitman were unavoid ably detained from attending the meeting but were still in the race for the senutorship. The meeting then ajourned and everybody voted Cherokee the best conducted meeting of the campaign. — - —- The Champion Won. On Tuesday 20th, a contest wa< | held between the “Western” and "Champion” road machines near Webster. The test was thorough and the hardest kind of roads were plow ed with the machines, ditched and arched to the center. The Western was operated by Mr. H. Green, of Fnion, and the Champion by T. H. Wells, of Charlotte. Mr. Green is said to be the best road machine ope rator in the South, and he had a trained driver and six very heavy mules, which had been working on the chain gang in Union county. The Champion had six smaller, un trained mules and a new driver. The machines did similar work bi|t the construction, lightweight, simplicity, ease in turning around, and durabili ty of the Champion made the board decide in favor of the Champion. Its fine record in the South was a point in favor of the decision. Cherokee Township and Blacks burg also bought another Champion since the contest. This step toward good roads is a wist* one, and we hope it wiii sprea i to the other townships, as good roads are a great business help to a town and county. • •* l»»- •- County Commissioners Convene. F. i’atrick, of Mercer, brought to this office on Monday n curiosity in the shape of an egg. Mr. Hickson is well known and has many friends here, and all are glad to have so worthy a Christian gentleman to come among us. Robertson went to Spar tanburg Tuesday. He goes to con duct a week’s services at his former church. “Billy” Johnson has been spending several days in the city the past week with his parents, Prof, and Mrs. W. L. Johnson. We are always glad to see Will. The Obligations Filled. When the new county campaign was on the town council, backed by the citizens of Gaffney, they gave a bond to furnish the future, books, etc., for the new county. That bond has been complied with in every respect and on Tuesday the county Commis sioners gave Mayor Wood the bond, the same having been complied with in every respect. This speaks in the i highest terms of the good faith of the town council and should demon strate to our friends in the new A Business Change. Robert Roundtree has resigned his position as manager of the Company store to accept a position with the Arkwright mills, which will be more lucrative. Mr. Roundtree will be succeeded by Mr. E. L. Eison, who has already taken charge. Mr. Eison has hud considerable experience in this particular line, and his courte ous and polite treatment will win new friends for the Company store. Mr. Roundtree will be missed in (JafT- ney and the Arkwright mills are to he congratulated upon securing his services. Nearing Completion. The second Baptist church is near ing completion. It is situated in north Gaffney, is large, of modern de sign and its erection is due to the liberality of the mill operatives and the Cotton Mill Co. supplemented by the citizens generally. Gaffney is proud of so handsome a building and glad for the great good it will do.
