Mr. Henry Roth, of 1848 South 9th Street, St. Louis, was given the usual mercurial treatment for contagious blood poison. He was twice pronounc ed cured, but the disease returned each time, he was seized with rheumatic pains, and red lumps and sores cov ered his body. Mr. Anderson will hold service at the Episcopal church Sunday af ternoon at 0 o’clock. All are in vited. Mr. Hopper, who is employed by the Buford Street Land Co., is doing some yood work on the extension of of said street. The Baptist parsonage is about completed. It is a credit to the Baptist congregation and an orna ment to the city. There will be Sabbath school next Sabbath at 10 a. m., at the I’resbyte- rian church. There will be no nreaching on account, of special ser vices at the Methodist church. A full injecting of themilitery com pany is called for regular drill on Thursday night July Joth. (’apt. Bell says every absentee who does not present a valid excuse will be fined. We are glad to note the presence on our streets, after a severe illness, of our friends Zeb Robertson and John Mabry. Both look somewhat weak, yet they are getting strong again. • Lawyer Hugh Long has moved into the office of Lawyer J. Claude Jeffe ries. While they are not partners they will occupy the same office room together in the Lipscomb Hotel pro- perty. Capt. R. M. Jolly had the misfor tune to break his leg—the wooden one —yesterday morning at the convict camp. He is compelled to resort to the use of his crutches until he can have it mended. If the Southern is going to persist is keeping their “empties" stored in Gaffney, we trust that it will change the location of some of them at least. So that the passenger depot will be a little more acceptible to tbe public. Supervisor X. Lipscomb, on Tues day, let the bridge for repairs over Thickety creek,at Gramlin. J.C.CIasy was the lowest bidder, and secureu the job for .f29.7o. There was a large number of bidders on hand and the bidding was extremely lively. The quantity of corn that has been sold in Gaffney this season makes things look like many of our farmers are getting back on an old and disas trous line. When farmers have to get their supplier off other farms you may begin to look out fur squalls. There was a picnic at Draytonville Mountain Monday evening, at which a number of the beaux and belles of that neighborhood hud a splendid time. Several young people from Gaffney were also present and par took of the delights of the occasion. Capt. II. I\ Griffith’s “Recollec tions of the buttle of Chancellors- vilio.’’ are eliciting praises from many of our patrons, and we have had many calls for extra copies of Thk Lkbcku. Write more Captain. The Lebuku wants more, the people want more. There will be no preaching service at the First Baptist Church next Sunday, owing to the special services i*t the Methodist Church. The Sun day school will hold its session at tbe regular hour. Also, the Junior Young People will meet at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Mr. J. Guy Daniels, of Daniels & Co., jewelers, left here last week to try his fortune at Gaffney. While we regret the loss of Mr. Daniels from our town, we commend him to the good people of Gaffney and wish for him abundant success in his new field. —Clinton Gazette. The Leh;::u and Flaw Picker regret very much their inability to be pres ent at the picnic at Thompson’s mill, Saturday They acknowledge with thanks, the kind invitation extended, and fully intended to be present but the circumstances were such as to prevent them doing so. 1 he Ledokr is in receipt of an in- vitation to lie present at a banquet to be tendered the State Dental As sociation at Harris Springs on Thurs day evening, July 22. Those who attend may depend upon a royal good time as Jim Harris is one of the finest entertainers in the State. Rev. X. J. Holmes, of Greenville, preached a most interesting sermon on the subject of State Missions at thf Presbyterian church Sunday. Mr. Holmes is one of the best preach ers in the Presbyterian Church of tin a te «r:d while his subject was strictly a church work he made it very entertaining. Fifteen persons were received into the fellowship of the Second Baptist church lust Sunday night and several others an- awaiting baptism. Their building is progressing nicely. Mr. Thomason, the pastor, will commence a meeting at Abingdon Greek Friday, a sisted by Rev. J. E. Covington, of Ciimpobella. (,. \\ oodward, promises a vigorous prose cution of the college anti we would he delighted to see the old institution go on and upward in the line of educa tional progress. The miscreant who with his pock et knife defaced and otherwise muti lated the handsome bread wagon of the Cherokee bakery last Friday de serves the severest punishment of the law, and the execrations of all good people. We trust that our city au thorities will suppliment the reward offend hy the bakery to an extent that will bring proper punishment on the vandal. A colored boy named Larkin Kirby came near loosing h'ts life yesterday. While crossing the trestle on the dummy line in front of Prof. Griffith’s residence he fell upon the track and became stunned. The dummy was stopped on an upward trip and the boy removed from the track. He was dazed to such an extent that he did not know the dummy was ap proaching. Prof. W. S. Hall, who will be con nected with the Gaffney Male ami Female Seminary when the next ses sion opens, was in the city a few days this week. Prof. Hall is a graduate of Wofford College, a teacher of con siderable experience, and a man of firm character and attainments. The Lejkikb extends a hearty hand to Prof Hall and his family and will be proud when we can number them as citizens of Gaffney. The county commissioners met in regular monthly session last Tues day and Wedneday. Cha’rman Lip scomb called the meeting to order. All the commissioners were present. Messrs. Green A Welles, represent ing road machines were heard, each showing the good qualities of his own machine, and urging the board to buy. The board look no action in ragard to buying but agreed to haw the different parties wishing to sell machines to come some time and give a trial over some of our roads. The board decided not to accept bids for location of site of court house and jail unless the bid em braced at least four acres of land. Bids were received from Samuel Jef feries, the Mountain View Land Gt... The Buford St. Land Go.. The Chero kee Land Co., and H. 1). Wheat, et. al. The hoard after hearing propositions and looking over sites, postponed furtbtr action until next meeting. The board decided that no one would be put on pauper’s list unless recommended by some worthy neigh bors. Supervisor Lipscomb’s action in sending Wm. Davis (white) to Spar tanburg poor house waif affirmed. Pauper Robert Peterson was allow ed $1.00 P‘ r month. '1 he supervisor alone was authoriz ed to buy supplies, etc., for convicts and convict camp. Etl. H. DeCamp, of The Ledgkb, submitted a proposition to do coun ty advertising, which was accepted. The commissioners were authoriz ed to employ labor on roads as cheap as possible and not to pay over sixty cents per day. The clerk was requested to ask the County commissioners of Spartan burg county to complete bridge on Xew Cut road. Meeting adjourned to meet 1st Tuesday after 1st Monday in August, after passing on a good many claims and transacting other routine busi ness. — -• •- —- Unclaimed Letters. Mr. Atkinson is a young lawyer having but recent ly graduated from the law school of the South Carolina College. Rev. I. W. Wingo, one time a citizen of Gaffney, was in Hie city last Saturday visiting his relatives and many friends. John Estes, of Etta Jane, was in the city last Saturday. Mr. Estes is one of our Cherokee farmers who sel dom comes to town without bringing enough of the products of his farm to buy what store goods as his fami ly needs. Mrs. Jenny Clary was in the city a few days ago. Aunt Jenny is a busi ness woman and the fine butter that she sells has been the standard in Gaffney for a long time. Anthony Surratt who lias been making a pretty good field hand on his fathers farm down in “the fork," for some months, is enjoying home comforts in the city now. Mayor Wood returned to the city Thursday, after several day’s absence. Win. McGowan, of the firm of Schurapert, Butler & McGowan, of Union, was among tne visitors to tne city Thursday night to hear Mr. Dix on. Mr. McGown is always welcome to Gaffney. Mrs. Frank Laney, of Monroe, X. C., is spending some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Gaffney, on Grenard street. J. J. Littlejohn, representing the Jonesville Knitting Mills, was in the city Friday in the interests of his firm. W. (i. Tolleson, of Spartanburg, was over a couple of days last week. Mr. Tolleson has many friends in Gaffney—his old home. Prof. B. W. Gctsinger, of Converse College Commercial School Spartan burg was in the ‘ city Friday. The professor reports our young friend. Howard Littlejohn, as making rapid progress in the business college. Miss Ella Majors is in the city, Ihe guest of Mrs. Hamilton. E. J. Bailey, of Cleveland county, X. C., was among the callers at this office Friday. Mr. Bailey is a genial young gentleman, and one of whom The Ledger is proud to claim among its friends. W. W. Poole, a former Gaflneyite, but for the past few years a resident of the (Jueen City, arrived in the city Tuesday for a few days visit. Mr. and Mrs. Z. A. Robertson left yesterday afternoon for Tigersviile, S. C , f‘,r a week or ten days. J. A. Humes, of Asbury, was among The Ledger’s callers yesterday. Prof. John R. Mack and family left on the vestibule yesterday for a three week's stay at Aiken. T. M. Parker and son John, of Pac- olet, were in the city yesterday. This is Mr. Parker’s first visit here in a year and he says Gaffney has wonderfully improved since then. Mrs. II. Fay Gaffney returned to the city la»t week, after a pleasant stay among relatives and friends in Atlanta. Dr. S. B. Crawley returned from Xashville, Term., Friday where he has been for a week or so enjoying a little vacation. Miss Mary McKnight is visiting Mrs R. 8. Lipscomb on Fredrick street. Fred Bryant, of Pacolet, was visit ing relatives in the city last week. Geo. W. DePriest, of Lutimore, X. C.. was in the city Thursday on busi ness. Miss Leonard Miller, formerly of Rock Hill, came to Gaffney last wet k to visit .Miss Ora Kendrick. She was not aware that Miss Kendrick was even sick and was shocked to hear that herjfriend was dead. Joe Lee, of the linn of Lee A Me- Swain, of this city, is very ill at the home of his uncle at Lattimer, X.G. Mrs. G. B. Colvin, of this ciy, left 'Tuesday for an extended visit to Charlotte, Statesville and other places. Prof. Davis Jefferies, an old time Cherokee boy. but now one of the teach ers in the I'nion graded school, took in Tom Dixon’s lecture and visited his numerous friends in Gaffney last week. R. F. Gibson, of Cherokee Fulls, was in the city Tuesday. Wilson Peden. of the Bee Hive, left Saturday night for a few day’s st ay at \Yilliutn»ton. He will go from there to the mountains. Go!. 1. 1>. Luflv.r, Robt. Wilkins and Lucian Hopper left Saturday for a trip to Saluda and the mountains. Col. Butler made a flying visit home Tuesday, and reported the boys as having a good time. Miss Ida Wood left Tuesday morn- inig for a trip toCunudu, Xiagra Fails, and other places. She will be absent a couple of weeks or more. Mr. B. F. Holmes and daughter, Miss Etta, took a trip last week to Glendale and Clifton Xo. J to visit friends and relatives. They returned home Friday after having hail a most delightful stay. Miss Grace Montgomery and neice are in the city visiting Mrs. W. W. Gaffney on Grenard street. Col. T. Stobo Farrow, from Wash ington, D. C., lain the city. Col. Far row 1ms resigned his position in the War Department and will resume the practice of law in Guffruy. Ho will be a valuable addition to our al ready splendid array of legal talent. Miss Sallie Mercer, of Kings Moun tain, X. C.. is visting W. D Thomas of th's <-ity. A. W. Doggett. wife and daughter, left the city Monday for a few days stay in Charlotte. X. G. Mr. and Mm. Kenneth Baker and children, of Prosperity, are the guests of Alderman L. Baker and family on Grenard street for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Baker have many warm friends in Gaffney who are ever pleased to have them here. Miss Lillias Brown, who has been connected with Cooper Limestone, left Monday for Mt. Zion for the summer. Auditor Camp returned from a trip to Blacksburg Monday. Rev. F. C. Hickson was on our streets several Jdays the past week. We are always glad to see him. Genial Doc Ross, of Shelby, X. C., was in the city several days tbe past week, looking after his new building. P. V.
